In Avalon, Seers are only visited if you desperately need to know what's going to happen. They’re not for if you want to know what you got on your Transfiguration exam but if you need to know if the infirm got better, or who you should choose as your bonded.
Helaine is one of the few Seers born into the Potter family, Lady Cartimandua Potter being the last. She had awakened her powers the night Arthur Weasley was being attacked by Nagini and later foresaw herself dying.
Now though, she wishes being a Seer wasn’t such a rare power as only her and Luna are the only Seers still alive in all of Magical Britain. Which means they’re bombarded with questions every second of the day. Some make Helaine want to cry (“Will Lavender survive her injuries from the war?”) and some make Helaine want to start an entire class on how to treat a Seer (“Is Defense Against the Dark Arts still going to be a class in 20 years?” said one very annoying fourth year)
Even though Helaine’s dealt with thousands of questions, she's never dealt with one as conflicting as this.
“Who should I choose?” Lady Daphne Greengrass asked for a second time, sounding more unsure as each word was said.
How would Helaine even begin to tell her that the best future she saw was the one with her? Lord Theodore Nott is in love with Miss Lily Moon, a Newblood who recently bonded, and will spend the entirety of their bonding mourning for the life he could’ve had with Moon. Mister Terry Boot will spend more time indulged in work then with her which will cause Daphne to spend her marriage years depressed and regretful. Even with the other people she sees Daphne choosing, none of them make her as happy as her uncertain future with Helaine. She looks happy in her future with Mister Anthony Goldstein but he cares more about Quidditch than her, she knows the look of someone obsessed with the sport, Oliver had it every day.
“None of the people who offered for you will give you the happiness you desire. ” Helaine settles on saying. She watches as Daphne's eyes widen slightly before she fixes her Pureblood mask.
Voice shaking slightly, Daphne queries, “Are you sure? I had a bad feeling about Lord Nott, but Terry? Surely you must’ve misread the future. ”
This was the hardest part about being a Seer, having to tell desperate people that all options wouldn't work, even the one they wanted. “You can’t misread the future Lady Greengrass. “
“Oh. “ Daphne said so softly that Helaine wouldn’t have heard it if she hadn’t spent a year in hiding. “I know we only get one question but is there anyone I'm compatible with. “
It wasn’t phrased as a question nor was it phrased as a statement. Daphne twiddled with the end of her dutch braid as she stared at the table in front of her meekly. In all their years of Hogwarts together, Helaine has never seen Daphne look so quiet and lost. She hated it. She hated that she couldn't do anything about it as well.
“There are a few, yes. “ Daphne was gorgeous, with a long blonde braid along her back, fair smooth skin, icy blue eyes, her verdant green dress was modest and looked to be made of the smoothed silk. Helaine didn’t want to seem biased. If she said herself, then it’d seem as though she was just trying to get Daphne to get with her.
Daphne nodded towards her, Helaine could see a glimmer of hope shine in Daphne’s eyes. Taking a deep breath, she said, “The first one is Mister Anthony Goldstein, a Ravenclaw in our year. “ She added when she saw the confused look on Daphne's face. “The other one is…” She hesitated.
“They are. . ?“ Impatiently Daphne gestured for her to continue. Helaine couldn’t blame her. So far her choices were a man she didn't even know and somebody who could be anything.
“Me. “ Daphne’s eyes widened as she stared at Helaine, waiting for a punchline that would never arrive. “I saw a glimpse into our shared life and you were happy. “
Daphne forgoed her Pureblood mask and all her emotions played out on her face like a movie. Confusion, disbelief, and something Helaine didn’t recognize. “We could– oh. “ Suddenly a look of realization showed on her face before she smiled slightly. Nervously, she lightly tapped her fingers on the table. Her throat felt tight and her chest felt as though a binding spell was placed on it. Why couldn’t Daphne have gone to Luna? This would’ve been way less awkward and Luna probably would have been done by now.
Helaine smiled anxiously as Daphne looked towards her with shining eyes. If only I could put on a mask. Daphne raised her petite hand and placed it upon Helaines tan one. “I expect a hair comb by the start of next month. “ Daphne smirked as Helaine sputtered and darkened. If she could turn red, Helaines sure her skin would be beet red.
“Are you sure?” Helaine found herself asking. “Mister Goldstein is a good man, I’m sure, he really loves Quidditch but he’ll love you almost as much as he does Quidditch. “
“Between a man I don’t know and the woman I had considered giving a courtship gift since our first year, of course I choose you. “ Daphne said this in a soft tone but sounded much more confident then she did earlier.
“You aren’t just saying that because I’m the Girl-who-lived, are you?” Helaine said insecure. Ever since she had entered Avalon, only a handful of people actually looked past her scar and saw her.
“When I first saw you in the station, I couldn’t see your scar. “ That’s all she needed to say. Daphne flinched as Helaine pulled her into a hug. She winced as the table dug into her hip but ignored it as she felt Daphne hug her back.
“Do you want to wait for our bonding ceremony or do you want to do it now?” Her Maidens Kiss. Back when Helaine was 14, she used to dream about losing her Maidens Kiss to Cho Chang but then the Ravenclaw got together with Cedric and after Cedric died, it was already too late. “Yes, “ Helaine said enamored. Daphne's lips are soft, is the first thing that registers in her mind. The next was the strong feeling of magic flowing through and around her. It felt as though a Patronus had been cast on her. She felt giddy as she tightened her hands on Daphne's waist; if she moved a few centimeters down, her hand placement would be considered scandalous. If Helaine had opened her eyes, she would’ve seen a bright white light embracing them. Eventually, the need to breathe overwhelmed her and she was forced to pull away. She beamed up at Daphne as she loosened her grip on her. That smile quickly became restrained as she nearly burst out laughing at Daphne's bright red face. Daphne somehow turned even redder when she realized what Helaine was laughing at. “Shut it! You’d be red too if you were blonde!”
Helaine laughed harder; she could barely breathe but she couldn’t stop. Daphne shook her head, still slightly red, and giggled before breaking into a laugh as well.
For the first time since she was 15, Daphne wasn’t worrying about the future.
