you're my wonderwall
The Fourth of July party was nothing like their last. Instead of huge crowds and blasting music, there were just their friends, and music that was more mellow. Instead of their usual party playlist, they had opted for more calm songs that they just plain liked. James, Marlene, and Sirius had been heavy influences on the playlist, adding lots of Cage the Elephant and Oasis, Remus and Mary had fought their way into adding a couple of Boygenius songs (“All of their songs are so sad you have a limit of three.”), and Lily had put some Taylor Swift.
Everyone was sitting around a campfire in James’ backyard. Sirius was on Remus’ lap in a chair. Barty and Evan were positioned similarly on a chair of their own. Mary, Marlene, Dorcas, Pandora, and Lily were all lying down on a blanket they had brought from inside. Peter was on his own chair. James and Regulus were sharing a couch.
The familiar sound of the intro of ‘True Blue’ came on and everyone faced Mary.
“Why are you all looking at me like that?”
“Mary, you know this song makes me cry, I'm skipping it.” James said.
“Oh my God James,” Mary laughed, “You’re such a baby.” Everyone laughed as he skipped the song.
You know what they say
Never waste a Friday night on a first date
But there I was, in my heels with my hair straight
And so I take him to this bar, this man wouldn't dance
He didn't ask a single question
And he was wearing these fugly jeans
It doesn't matter though
He doesn't have what it takes to be with a girl like me
Sirius was standing up and acting out every lyric. He lifted his hand and mimed out a microphone.
Not overdramatic, I know what I want
He dragged Remus up with him, which caused a chain reaction for everyone else to stand up and join them.
We're leaving the planet and you can't come
Uh-huh, I'm through
With all these hyper mega bummer boys like you
Oh yeah, I need
A super graphic ultra modern girl like me
Everyone had had at least three drinks by now, so they were all a bit tipsy. They all were dancing and giggling while Sirius continued to have the performance of a lifetime next to Remus.
Oh yeah, I need
A super graphic ultra modern girl like me
Telling secrets there on the mattress
Wearing nothing but glitter and lashes
He motioned and wiggled his fingers near his face.
At every party we're the party, shaking our asses
Making out while the world collapses
He grabbed on to his boyfriend next to him and gave him a quick peck before getting back to his show.
Not overdramatic, I know what I want
Now, It was Mary’s turn to steal the show.
We're leaving the planet and you can't come
Uh-huh, I'm through
With all these hyper mega bummer boys like you
Oh yeah, I need
A super graphic ultra modern girl like me
We're hot, we're drunk
Wow, look at her moving, baby, she's the one
She pointed to Lily with a grin on her face.
Oh yeah, I need
A super graphic ultra modern girl like me
The two decided the ‘stage’ was big enough for both of them.
Get up off your feet, get up on that bar
Walk that walk from Tokyo to New York
With everything you feel and everything you are
Walk that walk, flash the camera
Flash the camera, flash the camera, you're a star
Uh-huh, I'm through
With all these hyper mega bummer boys like you
Oh yeah, I need
A super graphic ultra modern girl like me
We're hot, we're drunk
Wow, look at her moving, baby, she's the one
Oh yeah, I need
A super graphic ultra modern
Ooh, you got me la-la-la-ing
Hyper-sexy top to bottom girl like me
They both struck a pose, out of breath, and stood there for a moment, just breathing.
“Okay divas,” Pandora said and laughed. Everyone was tired from their drunken dancing and sat down. Regulus leaned on the shoulder next to him and James wrapped his arm around his waist.
The next song that came on was ‘Telescope’. This had been one of Regulus’ additions to the playlist. He looked up at James who looked back at him while he quietly sang along to the lyrics. Regulus doubted that anyone else could hear him.
The alcohol had given them both the bravery to not look away.
“Was this one you?” James smiled.
“Yes,” Regulus let out a breathy laugh, “How did you know?
“In another universe I'm a wizard,” He said sarcastically.
“Not from me singing it under my breath the whole time we were cooking?” Regulus smiled at him.
“No,” James pulled him in closer, “Definitely not.” Now Regulus and James were fully pressed up against each other.
Crack! Crack! Crack!
The group all looked up to see the exploding colors in the sky.
“Fireworks!” Peter yelled.
“Let’s bike to the beach and watch!” Sirius said, already standing up to begin getting his bike. The rest of the group followed them, except for Regulus, who had flopped down to be lying on the couch.
“I’m really tired. I think I’ll stay here,” Regulus said, “I’ll meet you guys later though.”
“Come on Reggie you can’t spend the Fourth of July alone, laying in your bed,” Barty had pleaded.
“He won’t be alone,” James butted in, “I can stay with him.”
The rest of the group all looked at eachother, shared knowing looks, then got on their bikes and started towards the beach. James walked back towards Regulus.
“Thanks,” Said Regulus, “The beach is freezing at night and I didn’t feel like getting a sweatshirt.”
“You could’ve had mine,” James suggested, “I run hot.” At that Regulus laughed.
“Do you want me to clean everything up? I doubt they’re gonna be back and still have the energy to sit out here anyways,” Regulus stood up and grabbed the blanket off the ground.
“I’ll help don’t worry,” James started moving the furniture back into its usual arrangement around the fire pit.
The speaker that Regulus had forgotten was there started playing an intro to a song. It was familiar. Regulus gave James a look that said, what’s this song?
“Wonderwall.” James gave him a nod.
“You?” Regulus asked.
“Yea.” James gave a drunken giggle. They both took a break from cleaning and stood, taking in the music around them.
Today is gonna be the day
That they're gonna throw it back to you
By now you should've somehow
Realized what you gotta do
I don't believe that anybody
Feels the way I do about you now
James and him had subconsciously gotten closer. From being across the backyard, to standing next to each other.
Backbeat, the word is on the street
That the fire in your heart is out
I'm sure you've heard it all before
But you never really had a doubt
I don't believe that anybody feels
The way I do about you now
Regulus felt James’ hands on his shoulder, shaking him as James acted out the lyrics and laughed.
And all the roads we have to walk are winding
And all the lights that lead us there are blinding
The shaking stopped.
There are many things that I would
Like to say to you
But I don't know how
Now, they were just looking into eachothers eyes. Regulus was blushing.
Because maybe
You're gonna be the one that saves me
And after all
You're my wonderwall
“Reg,” James asked, “Do you know what a wonderwall is?”
“No,” He answered, “Explain it to me.”
“It’s someone you constantly find yourself thinking about,” James said, “Do you have a wonderwall? Because I do.”
“Who’s the lucky person?” Regulus asked, letting out a breathy giggle.
“You,” James was uncharacteristically serious, “Regulus, you’re my wonderwall.”
And all the roads that lead you there were winding
James leaned towards him.
And all the lights that light the way are blinding
Regulus met him halfway.
There are many things that I would like to say to you
But I don't know how
Their lips parted, and erased the space between them.
I said maybe
The kiss was gentle, as if James thought he could scare him away.
You're gonna be the one that saves me
Both of their hands began to roam around each other’s bodies.
And after all
Regulus pulled back in disbelief and stared at James.
You're my wonderwall
He leaned back in, this time more desperate than the first. James put his hand against the small of Regulus’ back, pulling him impossibly closer.
I said maybe (I said maybe)
Regulus’ hands were in James’ hair.
You're gonna be the one that saves me
James, who Regulus assumed was tired of bending over, hooked his arms under Regulus’ thighs and lifted him up so that he was straddling him.
You're my wonderwall
Regulus pulled away. “Do you want to go inside? It’s really cold out here.”
Regulus didn’t think James comprehended a word that he had just said. “Yes.” His voice was breathy. He had a goofy grin on his face.
“You know you don’t have to follow me anywhere I go right?” Regulus asked, laughing.
“I would walk to the ends of the earth if that meant I could do it with you.” James flipped Regulus around in his arms so that he could carry him bridal style through the house and into his room.
He gently placed Regulus down on the bed and their mouths found their way back to each other. Regulus stuck his tongue into James’ mouth and James once again met him halfway.
Regulus flipped so that he was straddling James’ lap. He grasped at James' shirt and muffled out an “off.”
James yanked at it and threw it across the room. He reached forward to pull off Regulus' next, who happily complied.
Regulus pulled away and began planting kisses along James’ jaw, slowly making his way down to his neck.
James was a mess, groaning loudly at the subtle nips in his skin. Regulus had started to mark James’ neck with a hickey.
James let out a breathy chuckle and Regulus felt the vibration of his throat against his lips. Regulus would give all his blood for the sweetness of his laughter. It lit up a room.
Eventually, the kissing gradually calmed down and turned into them cuddling and talking in James’ bed.
The two of them fell asleep.
~*~
Regulus awoke in James’ arms, this time, more calm than the last. James was already awake and admiring him. He planted a quick peck on Regulus’ forehead which led to more kissing.
Unfortunately, James had come to a point where he could no longer ignore his hunger, so the two went downstairs, where everyone from the night before was standing around in the kitchen.
“Oh?” Sirius stifled a laugh.
“Some people had fun last night..” Peter added, trying to muffle a giggle of his own. Regulus and James looked at eachother confused, until they saw each other's necks and burst out into laughter. The rest of the people around them had joined in.
James grabbed Regulus’ waist and pulled him in close to give him a quick peck, happiness that filled the room.
