Last Day Of Summer

I’m a wolf, at least that has been what my father has called me since I was younger. A highly intelligent, brave and loyal yet very complex animal, although I never knew if my father meant it as a compliment or an insult.

---

31st August 1977

The wind blew through my hair as I sat there watching the orange leaves fall off their branches as the car passed by the trees. “Shut the window, I didn’t pay for you to get your hair done just to ruin it in the same hour,” I heard my father say. There was no point in arguing so I did what he told me to do. It was the last day of summer and I was officially gonna start my seventh year at Hogwarts tomorrow, my final year.

Dad kept insisting he would do my hair himself, claiming going to the salon was a big waste of money, but I wasn’t gonna let him fuck up my hair like he did last year. Having to walk around with a crew cut was bad enough in my sixth year; I wasn’t gonna repeat the same mistake I did last year.

Silence filled the car, not a breath to be heard until out of the corner of my eye, I saw my father look towards my way.

“Why the long face?” he spoke.

I continued to stare out of the window as I replied, “I wish I could live through something.”

“Aren’t you?” His eyes are back on the road now.

“Nope, the only exciting thing about 1977 is that the first Star Wars movie came out.”

“Okay fine, so your life is the worst of all, you win.”

Frustration and confusion grew inside of me. “Oh so now you’re angry?” I asked bitterly.

As we both began to yap, “I’m sorry I’m not perfect,” I spoke as I turned to him with an annoyed expression.

“No one is asking you to be perfect,” he replied coldly.

“I wanna go where culture is, like Birmingham or Manchester or where writers live in the world.”

My father stopped the car and turned to me as the car behind us began to honk.

“How did I raise such a snob, Remus—”

I cut him off. “My name is Moony,” I said with a stern face.

“Well actually, it’s not and it’s ridiculous,” his voice began to grow as the honking behind us did.

“Call me Moony like you said you would,” my voice grew as my father began to drive again.

“You know you should finish school, get a job, go to prison, get out—”

Hearing my father undermine me made me explode on the inside. I couldn’t stand listening to him anymore. The next thing I knew, my hand was heading towards the door handle, opening it, and my body jumping out.
