Snowflakes
James was wishing for a white Christmas. He stared out the window for seemingly days, remembering the times he'd play in the snow with his parents and Sirius, throwing snowballs and making snowmen and running inside when it got too cold and their fingers felt like they would fall off. Effie and Monty'd make hot chocolate and soups and curries, putting on shitty Christmas movies to keep the boys entertained.
But this year it was different. Effie and Monty went back to India to see family for Christmas, Sirius was celebrating privately with Remus in their flat, and James was waiting for Regulus to come home from work. Oh how things had changed in such a short year.
He heard the door open, calling out "kitchen!" from his spot leaning over to counter so Regulus could find him. He feels Regulus' arms snake around his waist, leaning into him and peering over James' shoulder to stare out the window with him.
"What're we looking at?" Regulus asks gently.
"m waiting for snow," replies James softly, relaxing into Regulus' embrace.
"Won't have to wait long now, I s'pose. I felt a bit of snow on the way home," Regulus says softly, smiling fondly at his boyfriend.
"Did you now?" asks James eagerly, almost missing the first snowflakes to cling to the window and start frosting the grass outside.
"There it is," whispers Regulus softly, watching as James hurriedly pulls on his coat and boots, gesturing for Regulus to do the same.
After rapidly tugging on not nearly enough layers for the freezing winds, they rush outside, catching snowflakes on their tongues and chasing each other around in a quickly ensued game of tag.
James catches Regulus around the waist, spinning him slightly before stopping, kissing a snowflake off the smaller boy's nose and just holding him close.
