Chapter 8

The months after school ended were busy. Marauders joined the order to fight against the war. The war was getting bigger every day, Voldemort was getting stronger. Regulus was still in school, he and James sent letters every day, they were usually about the war and how the world is going. Suddenly James didn't receive a letter from Regulus for weeks. Until one night. It was already late, James was just about to go to bed when he saw an owl behind the door. He recognized the owl immediately, it was from Regulus.

James let the owl in, took the letter from it and gently opened it.

“Dear James,

I don’t know how much time I have left. When you are reading this, I have already left the school. I have learned something about Voldemort, there is a way to stop him. I need to do something, but I might not survive.
If you don’t hear me after this, just know that I chose to do the right thing, I tried to stop Voldemort. Don’t try to find me James, you have to promise that, it’s too dangerous.
Tell Sirius I'm sorry and that I love him.
I Will miss you forever my love, I love you. Look me in the stars.
Yours, Reg.”

James kept reading the letter again and again. He did not know what to do. Only thing he knew was that he needed to tell Sirius. Even though it was already late, he decided to go to Sirius’ and Remus’ flat.

“Merlin prongs, it's midnight-” Sirius muttered as he opened the door. He immediately quieted down when he could see tears going down James’ cheeks.

“He has left.” James broke down crying. He offered the letter to Sirius, who looked confused.

Sirius froze as he read the letter, without saying anything both of them walked inside to the living room, where Remus was. They just sat down on the sofa, and let Remus read the letter.

For a moment, nobody said anything. There was understanding in the air, nobody didn’t need to say anything.

After a while, Sirius was the first one to break the silence. “Bloody hell, he thinks he can fix everything alone? That is so typical of him.” He played with his curls, trying to think of something.

“He- He said not to go find him. What if he doesn’t make it?” James' voice cracked as he spoke, tears were still streaming down his face, but he didn’t care about them.

Remus signed, he tried to stay calm. “He knows what he is doing, we could put him in even more danger if we go look for him.”

“So we need to just sit here, waiting to get to hear about him?” James asked quietly.

“He said not to look for him, he is warning us. We need to know what he has found, and maybe then we can find him.” Remus answered. James just nodded as a sign of understanding.

“If I didn’t leave him in that house, if I didn’t leave him with them- If I had taken him with me.” Sirius whispered. His voice was full of pain.

“No Sirius, no. He made his choices. Don’t blame yourself.” James interrupted him.

The room fell into silence again, until James spoke up. “So.. What are we going to do?”

Remus was quiet for a moment, thinking what to answer. “We need to tell the order, then we can start to find clues.

And that’s what they did.
