Year One

Evan Rosier was always energetic when he was a child. He was constantly bouncing off the walls, from one fascinating thing to another; From beginners' divination, to herbology, to magical creatures– And right now was no different. Evan had found his way into the Hogwarts library for the first time, marveling at all the books that were there.

“Pandora, look! Do you see this?” He exclaimed, grabbing his sister by the hand, dragging her along as he wandered around the library. Pandora nods with a silent smile at her brother, her eyes also darting around the large room. Pandora Rosier had always been the quiet type. She mainly kept to herself, seeming as if she never spoke to others. She was always keeping herself preoccupied in a corner, playing with animal bones or reading up on human anatomy, or just simply following her brother around.

The twins eventually sat themselves down in the aisle between the alchemy section and the dragon section, where they both could sit and read. Evan looked over to his sibling, getting distracted as always when reading for long periods of time. She was reading contently next to him, silently and efficiently flipping through the pages of her alchemy book. Her long, braided blonde hair fell gently on the pages of the book, obscuring some of the words she was reading– not that she seemed to mind. Evan felt something indescribable in that moment, but the thought was clear enough in his head, Iwish my hair was like that. It wasn’t a revolutionary thought, not at all, but it was the start of a realization much bigger than just hair. He was jealous. He didn’t know of what yet, just that he was jealous. Shrugging his shoulders, Evan went back to reading, flipping onto a page about a Romanian longhorn.

Pandora from the grass as her brother darted around the school grounds, looking at the different plants that grew wildly. His trousers got more and more dirty as he kept kneeling on the ground, not that he cared. Pandora sat with her legs closed and her back straight– as was expected of her as a Rosier girl. Girl. The word always left a bad taste in Pandora’s mouth, not that it ever mattered much to anyone besides Evan. He was the only one that never referred to her as a “girl” or “sister”. She had always appreciated that once she told him, he never questioned it. He even helped her cut her hair when they were younger, even though they both ended up getting in trouble for it. But now the nagging feeling that something wasn’t right about her grew as she watched her brother. There was something about him that always made her feel… wrong. Like she was a shell of who she was supposed to be. But once more, she let the thoughts settle at the back of her mind, not caring to unpack it at the moment.

Evan ran back over to Pandora, grinning widely at her as he sat down next to her. She smiled back smally, moving to dust him off from some of the dirt he had accumulated.

“You’re dirty.” She stated simply, picking some grass out of his hair.

“It’s just grass, Panda!” He laughed, helping her get the rest out. She just shook her head at him, but a small smile danced on her lips still. Evan began to prattle off about the different plants he had found, Pandora listening silently as she watched the rest of the school walk about. At that moment, a tall lanky boy made their way over to the two. He had dark, brown, messy hair, and a pair of dark brown eyes to match. The boy’s ears were pierced, two ear lobe piercings in each ear. Somehow, he was able to make the formal uniform they all had to wear seem informal, with his slight adjustments.

“Hi there,” The boy greeted, grinning cheekily at Evan in particular, but sparing a glance at Pandora as well, “I’m Barty. Who’re you?”

“What do you want?” Pandora asked simply, not even bothering to give Barty their names yet. Evan usually was the one to introduce them both, but there was something about Barty that made Pandora answer. He looked over to her, his brown eyes clear with an ulterior motive when they looked at Evan, but more curious when looking at her.

“Just wanted to find out your names. I haven’t ever met a set of twins before.” He shrugged, raising his hands in defense.

Evan looked between Barty and Pandora, unsure of what was happening, but keeping quiet.

“Never met a set of twins before? Okay. Now you have, goodbye.” Pandora shut him down, somehow knowing that even if she did, he wouldn’t give up so easily. Barty’s grin widened, as he made a move to sit on the ground with them.

“I wanna know more about you two.” He ignored Pandora’s goodbye, “So, let's try again. What are ya’lls names?”

Evan finally spoke up, realizing his sibling wasn’t being hostile, just calculating. “I’m Evan, Evan Rosier, and this is Pandora, my twin sibling.” Pandora nodded at him, as if confirming that was her name.

“And you’re Barty.” Pandora said, “But that’s not your full name. I’ve seen you around.” Barty bristled at the words, trying to school his expression but failing. “Yeah, it’s a nickname. But it may as well be my real name, got it?” Pandora studied his expression, before nodding. She knew he didn’t like his real name. Everytime his full name– Bartemius Crouch Jr, named after his father she supposed– was called, he immediately corrected the teacher. No other student had done that, no matter what other name they preferred to be called. Barty cleared his throat, changing the subject, “So, what’re you two doing out here?”

“I was looking at the plants!” Evan exclaimed, looking excited to talk about it once more, “I was looking at the different wild plants that grow in the cracks of the stone! I found so many cool plants, I even found some cute bugs as well! Do you wanna see?” Barty chuckles, smiling at Evan, “That sounds like a blast, dude. I’d love to see.”

Pandora watched Barty curiously as Evan went on about the beetles and ants he had found. He seemed to be genuinely listening to what Evan was saying, and wasn’t mocking him with his replies. Pandora could tell just by looking at Barty he had no interest in plants nor bugs, but was just happy to listen to Evan speak. It makes sense, seeing as Barty had really only come up to them to speak to Evan. A part of Pandora appreciated that, but another part of her wondered why she felt upset.
