Growing Pains

The year 378 of the first age

It has been 16 years since Hrávo came to his life, and the changes that occurred in such a short time were impressive to say the least. The first few years his son was still adjusting from his former life, and though he was not voicing it, he was testing the boundaries and seeing if the sons of Fëanor are going to be just more disappointing adults. From the early days Maedhros noticed that his little one was keeping certain distance from him and his brothers, not allowing himself to be fully known to thouse around him.
Figuring out the real reason his little one was keeping them at arms length was gut wrenching. At first, Hrávo spent his time resting, learning the language and getting into mischief. It wasn’t until a few months had passed that his second along with the head healer told him that it looked like his son was playing at being a child. At first when Faclon told him that, he didn’t agree but kept his eyes open, and sadly that was when he started to notice things. The nightmares were there since day one, so it was impossible for the child to hide it; however, there were suspicious looks yonya would cast when he thought no one was looking, flinching that he would try to suppress and many other things that painted a painful picture.

From what he already knew about hinya there were very few good memories in his past. What’s worse, is that to his knowledge most of those good moments (that Nelyo is aware of) were tainted by grief. The nightmares the little one experianced were a constant, in fact, it was so bad that it became common practice among his people to go out of their way not to interrupt when Hrávo was able to rest. He would let very few elves hold him when he was asleep, and even fewer were able to make an ósanwë connection with him when he was that vulnerable. In the past 16 years it has only been himself, Káno, Ambarussar, and 2 of Hrávo’s personal guards. They all had glimpses of devastating moments in the little ones life, at first with the exception of himself and Amrod they all hoped it was a non-realistic portray of possibilities. It wasn’t until later when the little one sleepily confessed to Maethorion that it was memories that it became clear just how deeply the elfling was hurting.

Once he knew what to look for it was fairly noticeable that his little one wasn’t sure how to handle this new reality he was in, and was doing his best to pretend that everything was fine. It wasn’t even the change of world, and species that was hardest for Hrávo to grasp, but the consistent positive attention and lack of pain. That was enough for Maedhros to know that things would reach a breaking point and there is nothing he could do but wait on the sideline and provide support. He remembers the days after his capture, it took him years to believe he was actually free, he still has times where he does not believe it to be true. Maedhros knows that there is nothing to do but be patient and provide support.

The first true breaking point happened after he asked his son about his begetting day, Hrávo explained that he was fairly sure it was a month after he arrived, but he had no way of being certain. When he asked his son why he hadn’t said anything, he explained no one ever cared before. Whats worse is that he did not understand why anyone would care now. After some pestering Maedhros got Hrávo to sit down with him and calculate when his begetting day should be, while discreetly planning a quiet celebration for his child for the missed opportunity.

That evening he had his child and himself dine in his rooms, where the cooks made Hrávo’s favorites, and presented him with a bracelet made by his father as a gift. He remembered how confused he was that anyone would care, so he figured it best to do something small for the first time so the little one wouldn’t be overwhelmed. Maedhros made sure to apologized for it being so late and promised that his next begetting day would be more than just the 2 of them. The child looked at him confused, but thanked him nonetheless. Later that night when his son went to sleep he found his little one crying in silence, he held him closely singing to him a lullaby his grandfather used to sing. He tried reaching out with ósanwë to understand what the problem was, and as soon as he made a connection he was bombarded with memories, it showed him the times adults in Hrávos’ life had made a promise only for it to be forgotten. To this day Maedhros is certain that had he not been so tired, emotional and young, Hrávo would never had shared his truth with him. Nelyo is still unsure if yonya is aware what he showed him that night.

Nelyafinwë learned that he can never promise yonya something that he does not know for a fact that he can keep, he knew that something like that is the only way to nurture the tentative trust his child has in him. After that night it seemed he and Hrávo knew how to communicate better, or more likely Nelyo better understood what not to do. It helped that he learned from the memories to be as honest as possible when it comes to matters involving Hrávo; more importantly, never to dismiss his child when he comes to him with a concern, after lack of support that seemed to be the most consistent offense. There were a quite a few more time when he held his hinya as he cried in his sleep, that normally followed whenever he and/or his brothers surprised him in a positive manner, or simply kept their word, thankfully those nights were getting fewer and farther in between.

As time went by, and his child felt more comfortable around him some things began to come out, little magical bouts here and there. It soon became obvious that Hrávo was testing him, waiting to see how he would react. It was saddening to realize just how scared his son was, but considering what his former ‘caretakers’ did to him when ever he had a bout of magic the apprehension was understandable. It was why they already knew not to make a big deal out of it, though he was greatful he only did it around himself, his guards, and his uncles. One evening after an incident where his elfling moved something with his powers, when it was time to go to sleep he lifted him to his bed and told him, ‘Istyar it is time for all elflings to enter Irmo’s realm.’ his son seemed to understand what he meant and with a shy smile hugged him. He must admit he was very proud of his naming skills, it felt quite appropriate with his mischevious gremlin.

The next day when they were sitting for their morning meal with the rest of the household Maglor called him Hrávo, and his little one told him, ‘you can also call me Istyar if you like…my atar does…’ with a shy smile. If Maedhros was a little teary of hearing his hinya intentionally calling him atar for the first time no one said anything, though they did make sure to call him Istyar from then on.

His siblings reaction to the little ones name was not bad either, each sent a different figurine of a wizened figure with various engraving. Moryo, Káno, and Tyelko had taken to use it as often as they could when they sensed how pleased he was. Curufin gave a pleased look saying how he now had an appropriate name for his little wonder of a nephew, making hinya blush. Ambrussa was furious with himslf for allowing their atar to name them as he did and dramatized the ‘jealousy’ just to make his little wizard laugh, Tyelko chose to vocally criticize his own atar naming skills in turn. Aredhel sent a bracelet with an engraving of his name in different languages special made by Maeglin and herself. (He is fairly sure that either Fingon or Tyelko explained to her how nervous and pleased Istyar was about it all). Fingon and Uncle Fingolfin sent him a soft blanket with an embroidered emblem of the house of Finwë and the writing Istyar Nelyofinwëion under it.

It was 3 years after he came to them that his son sat with him in the privacy of his study and showed him something that amazed him. “Atar, I know I have been here a while, but there are a few things I didn’t really know how to share.” Which to be honest he assumed as much. “When I was sent here from my old life I had a few trunks that I packed in the fantasy that one day I could get away… well, it seems they came with me...” His little one looked forlorn like he just confessed a horrific crime.

“Is that what Hedwig has always been guarding since that first day? That odd leather pouch…” He remembered the phoenix keeping a pouch away from everyone but his son, he was always curious but figured it is safer not to pry.

Istyar looked at him confused, “yes, it is called mulskin pouch, and it has an expansion inside of it, it currently holds multiple trunks and a tent that I stocked to full capacity.” Though the confused whisper; “with quite a few additions…” did not go unnoticed

“Does this mean I get to see some of it?” He was so excited, it was one thing to see the magical things in the memories his child shared, but to experience it himself! (Though hopefully he didn’t bring any flying brooms, or that weird metal carrage that flew through a cluster of giant spiders, or any other thing that will allow the menace to continue his death defying stunts 🤞)

“Sure, there are a few things in particular I think could help.” That was when he opened the pouch and took out an odd looking box, placed it in the middle of the room and pressed the symbol on top. The thing expanded into a huge trunk that took most of the space in the room, it was nearly as tall as himself. That was when Istyar opened that panel on the side and grabbed his hand to follow. As he walked inside he found a huge library with endless supply of books in languages he had never seen before.

“When I realized just how thoroughly my access to information was being monitored I took precautions, purchased the biggest library trunk the manufacturer can create, and worked to creat a readily available collection that can not be removed from my person.” The justifiably bitter tone did not go amiss. “ then at the end of my 2nd year of schooling I managed to employ someone highly capable with a penchant for mischief and lack of regard for the law, or boundaries. So when I instructed him to copy all the books in my holdings, along those that were at the school I was studying in, and the library in oxford. Ohh, a none magical institute for masteries…” he explained when Nelyo looked at him confused.”I did not anticipate he would go as far as he did. Though it is slightly my fault, I did give him the funds to achieve it to his hearts content. Frankly, I thought he would only get into the public records, never did I imagine he would go to the private and secret collections as well. The reason it was important to me to introduce you to this is several matters; healing, protection, and food supplies.” That got Maedhros to stop looking around in wonder, and focus mostly on his son.

“First is the option of warding the territory, there are protections that could be placed to prevent those with intention to harm from entering, protect from fire, attacks and so much more. What you defend and how you defend varies with your aim, the power you are able to utilize, the type of stone you choose to anchor the protection to, and most importantly what language you utilize. Meaning, if whoever is attempting to break the protections doesn’t know the language you use, it will force them to attempt to overpower the wards. Something like that is known to be extremely draining and would often require a coven of wixen to achieve; moreover, we have the option to combine it with a magical language, which is far more powerful than a non magical one in enchantments. This means that not only do we have a selection of locally unknown languages to utilize for our defense, we can layer it with parseltongue which is a magical language that communicates with serpents. I was able to confirm with uncle Celegorm that even though he understands it when spoken he can’t read it.” He said it with so much enthusiasm that Nelyo could understand this was probably a much bigger deal then he is realizing. His face must have showed what he was thinking that Istyar just gave him an indulgent smile before expanding.

“ Parseltongue is a magical language that can only be inherited as a blood gift, I inherited it from my late grandmother. Those with the gift were renounced healers and wardmasters, late grandmother Euphemia was a wardmaster.” Istyar was right and this is something to be thrilled about. “The best part is that I have a collection of books that specialize in warding from various private libraries including a journal showing the foundations to the warding system used for my old school. Another from my family vault documenting the protections used on the family estate. Though to be honest I don’t know how Dobby got a hold of that, both were supposed to be lost centuries ago.” (If somewhere outside of space and time Magic was feeling very pleased, no one had a way of knowing the cause.) “Both sets of the ward systems are designed for areas bigger than Hithlum, to protect against both magical and non magical armies, as well as wild magical creatures and corrupted magics. Moreover, they have only gotten stronger over the years, the only time either had a breach was when it was intentional.” Maedhros found himself standing there looking at his son with shock, this would help them all with keeping their territories safe. Even if it won’t stop the major threats it would still help significantly, they needed a way to work on this without hinting that it was his son that is the source on the information.

He took a deep breath before talking, “Yonya, this is amazing, and I trust in your confidence enough to worry about what would happen if word got out that you are even associated with the solution.”

His child looked at him amused, “wait until you hear everything before you start panicking, there are other things to keep you up at night. Follow me.” That was when he dragged him to a side area with soft chairs and side table that had several books on it. His child told him to look through one of them, and that is when he noticed the schematics. “This book has instructions on how to build a magical green house, and what rune sequence is needed to magically intensify the proficiency, along with how to expand it and maintain it.” When he noticed Maedhros confused face he elaborated. “A green house allows you to grow plants regardless of the climate you are at; moreover, with the magical enhancements it allowed for more flexibility in size, control, pest control, and many more options. I was thinking we can have one for medicinal plants, and another for food supply.” Istyar was right, he has more reasons to panic for his child's’ safety. The little goblin was smirking at him only making it worse.

“Come along atar, I need to show you the next trunk.” He grabbed a few of the books from the side table and left the library, or is it trunk? Then the little brat closed the panel behind them, pressed a symbol and shrunk it back to a small box. He got a different trunk out and repeated the process of opening it. When they entered this time he was in shock, they were surrounded by odd plants he has never seen before. Istyar took him on a tour, apperantly it had different spaces for different climates. He showed him various trees that held what he thinks is fruit, though there were a few that had crystals. There were a few bushes that were moving towards them and looked ready to attack, they quickly left that area, he hasn’t decided which disturbed him more, those that kept singing or the few that clustered and were fighting using their teeth? Flowers shouldn’t have teeth!

By the time they were sitting in a clearing surrounded by giggling flowers Nelyo wasn’t sure what was happening, it was all very strange, disturbing and wonderous.
“I know you are confused why we are here, but this is a green house trunk, I figured you needed to see it in practice to understand. Whats more is that I have many plants from my first world, and thanks to the library plenty of information of how to best utilize them in potions, and in combat.” (Say what! 😳) “For now, the last, but not least is that I have a list of simple potions that the healers can test. The good thing about them is that for the most part they are made from fauna found locally, it’s the integrating of power in the brewing process that gives it the needed boost, so I’m less worried about them. The more complex ones I don’t yet know if they, or I are skilled enough to brew, not to mention the effects they have on elves. Moreover, I rather not risk my supplies until we are sure about everyone’s abilities.” Which fair.

“It’s weird y’know… I know for a fact that neither of my trunks were this big, nor this full…” he said quietly in a confused tone. On that ominous note he and his little balrog set and talked about logistics. It was decided to invite Curufin, and Celebrimbor to work with them on the project. Unfortunately, it was clear that Istyar would have to be actively involved in the warding project since he was certain they would be unable to power the rune stones without an active core. That’s not even getting started with the parseltongue runes, for Maedhros it looked like nothing but squibbles, and Celegorm already confirmed that no one but Istyar can read them. He had to put his foot down and demand that his son would be limited with the amount of work he would provide for the project. He is an elfling and he deserved a childhood!

When he informed his brother and nephew that Istyar has several long term projects he wants their help with the two couldn’t come fast enough. The barrage of complaints from the rest of his siblings quickly followed. It took them over a year to find a way and create a good warding sequence that would fit the criteria of everything they needed. They even developed a way for elves to charge the runes by using songs of power. He wouldn’t be suprised if it took so long because the two were busy trying to study Istyar’s library trunk and magical tent. Not to mention the two crazy elves discovered the wonder of runes and insisted Istyar teach them the languages that were used in the books so they could better understand rune theory and application. The two somehow learned 2 written languages, and 3 different rune languages from Hrávo’s old realm. (Though he was impressed to learn that his hinya already knew all 5 languages and several more) At a certain point Nelyo put his foot down and got them to focus.

Testing it was fairly amusing, they kept creating small warding stones to experiment and sent hunting parties to try them, Celegorm and Ambarussar came running at that phase claiming that it was their duty as masters of their craft. Funnily enough in the last four tries they were reluctant to return the stones due to how effective they were. The idiots went as far as to bait orcs and goblins on the border with Angaband. This lead to a secondary project of creating more small warding stones to have for each patrol, and hunting partys to take with them. The new protocol was further spread to all of the Fëanorian territories.

A sample was sent to his uncle to ask if he was interested in some. He had to discreetly explain that a little scholar was the only one ‘skilled’ enough to make them for now, and they are still working on learning how to charge the more complex ones themselves. This was why they are currently limiting the supplies and distribution, thankfully said problem was resolved a few months later, though still limited by who was both skilled and powerful enough to power the runes while inscribing. His uncle sent a messenger back soon after making an order to have the entire Noldor force supplied that had no deadline for supplying. Due to it being such a big order, it was said to just send them as they can. He insisted on paying full price, not just for the materials as the initial offer intended claiming that anything less than that would be an insult to the ‘scholar’.

According to Fingon, him and uncle used the chance to get away from the court in order to ‘test’ a possible protection not giving it much thought, only to see how effective it was in practice. They sent each of their marchwardens for a night trip instructing them to camp in a known orc infested area and see what happens, all 5 came back insisting that no force should leave their territory without it from how effective they were. On a random note uncle Fingolfin kept sending inquiries of what would Istyar like for his begetting days.

The warding of the territory was a little more complex, it took them more then 2 years to work out a workable solution that didn’t exhaust or demand much from hinya. The solution that they found required Istyar to provide the initial spark, and in seven years the warding stones would be charged enough from the natural magics of the land to for the protections to reach their full capacity. Though his hinya did insist that he would continue to charge the main ward stone yearly because he can feel that it would be important later on. They didn’t argue much, understanding that some things are beyond them, besides both Tyelpë, and Atarincë studied the books on wards throughly enough to reassure him that what Hrávo was proposing was actually less strenuous for his magic.

When they did the initial activation it was spectacular, less than 2 months after activation the entire territory was clear of orcs and goblins. They divided the area so there was a range where orcs felt compelled to leave, the secondary boundry was more active and their presence caused them pain, less than a hundreds leagues the perimeter was blocking creatures of Morgoth. The main warding stone in the castle was even more impressive, in seven years it would be able withstand a direct attack from a balrog. As oppose to the perimeter ward that would take 21 years. When he asked how they knew that his son explained that the original warding system was intended to protect against magical creatures in the same class as a nest of dragons, which disturbingly enough was common in certain regions in his old world. They added a lot more protections that were common in estates, such as encouragements for clarity of mind and spirit that was meant to help strengthen the fëa of those with in the boundary against the corruption of Angaband and Morgoth.

Caranthir insisted on being incharge of negotiating the purchase of the supplies needed to ward all of their territories as discreetly as possible, the last thing they wanted was for it to become clear what the key ingredients of the protections are. After that he discreetly invited his uncle to see for himself the protections in his home so he could convince him to do the same for Hithlum. According to Istyar and Curufin the calculations on a territory that size along with more foot traffic would mean that it would take longer to charge. They would need to calculate the network differently, but in 13 years the main stone would be able to withstand a balrog attack as oppose to the 7 years Himring requires since it will cover a city oppose to a fort and a surounding settlement. The perimeter will take 63 years to charge as oppose to the 21 it takes Maedhros teritory again due to foot traffic more than size. His uncle saw no issue in adding protections that will take a few years to reach full potential and started scheming for a diplomatic visit.
Maedhros was not amused.

He also sent a letter to Aredhel explaining to her that they developed a protection to their territory, and if her husband is interested he can see it for himself as it was initially tested in Himring, and is being gradually distributed to the rest of their territories. He did emphasized that they are currently not sharing who is the creator, nor what his methods due to secrecy clauses. Just because he wants his little cousin safe, does not mean he is willing to chance the exposure of his child to a sindar lord, and his king. Truth is he was aware they are unlikely to accept the offer, but he figured it would help foster good relations with her husband.

As for the green houses it had taken the demented trio less than a month to get a workable prototype. Once they figured it out they had Celebrimbor and Curufin build it in hours where his son was not available to work with them since he limited Istyar to 2 work hours 5 days a week. Had the little gremlin not enjoyed his play dates with Curufin and Tyelpë so much he would have limited it even further.

For the most part the two were able to power the simple rune systems with songs of power, Maglor insisted on lending his expertise. According to him they needed to be free to learn the effects on the metal and various options of song. It was not at all an opening to work with his nephews on his craft, he was simply gracious like that. Istyar was not pleased about being kept as far away as possible from the actual testing, but they all agreed it was no place for a child. Hinya tried to argue that he is far more mature and advance than any other elfling his age, and it is true, but he is still an elfling. He was barely 18 years old at that point, no one in their right mind would feel comfortable having someone who is not a master involved in something so volatile.

Once the green houses were established it was amazing to see the little one running around wanting to help with the planting. It seemed his child had a gift with nature, every plant he helped work with prospered to an extent the other workers in the green house were starting to folow his lead. Though having Káno discover there was an entire section in the library trunk dedicated to music theory, instruments he had never heard of, and a huge collection of music sheets in styles he’d never even imagined. Well… Istyar now had another mad genius to babysit. Thankfully Curufin and Tyelpë volunteered to teach himself, and Káno English, and Latin. There is also an area dedicated for language study so they could study further without bothering hinya, though the little gremlin did use the chance to get his uncle to start giving him lessons in song. (Káno’s smug face was very annoying.)

As for the potions book that Istyar translated for them, Maedhros sat with his chief healer before she could start learning from hinya. The only ones that knew the extent of Istyar’s otherness are: Maedhros brothers, nephew Tyelpë, Fingon, Fingolfin, and two of Istyar personal guards Maethorion and Alges. The last two were necessary due to them connecting with his child’s fëa. However, he had to tell his people something, so it was established that to his chief healer, head of household, seconds, and the rest of Istyar’s personal guards that his hinya is a powerful peramaiar that was personally entrusted to Nelyafinwë. This was neither a lie nor a distortion of the truth; however, this did not explain the knowledge nor the already accumulated skills for one so young.

Istyar suggested to once again use a fraction of the truth, tell her that this is some of the inheritance left to him, and his hinya wanted to share what he could. If anyone asks where has it been all this time they can simply point out that Hedwig was safe guarding it. Again, not even a fraction of a lie. When he informed this to Ceutare she was very enthusiastic to learn but raised her misgivings about no one being credited for them. She did not want to unintentionally receive credit for Istyar’s birth parents life work. The gremlin had the audacity to laugh in her face and tell her that to them this recipe book is an equivalent of an assortment of common house remedies. They would actually take offense of being known as the creators. Annoyingly this too was not a lie, he was shocked to discover that Istyar literally translated a book of wixen common home remedies; moreover, these potions are considered so common and simple they are taught in the 1st and 2nd year of schooling to make sure every wixen child knows the basics.

Ceutare eyed him dubiously but subsided when she realized how serious the elfling was, and agreed to keep the source of the information as an obscure healer not wanting people to bother them. The last thing they needed was for his child to have so much attention at such a young age. She whole heartedly agreed, and worked on discreetly testing the recipes and the potions they produced. It was very amusing to see his head healer receiving potion lessons from his 18 year old elfling. Though to her credit she ignored the millennia age gap and followed the lessons with care, especially when she realized he was teaching her a technique and the potions themselves were his means to do so. According to him she can teach him how to brew potions and elixir better, what she needed to learn was how to infuse her power in to the harvesting of the ingredients, and brewing process. Something elves normally did through song.

To say that she was pleased with the results would be an understatement. Maedhros was a little relieved he didn’t let her know about the library trunk with an entire section for potions and healing techniques for her to explore. His brothers were already impossible to get rid off. Though in his defense Istyar did provide her with 23 ‘simple’ recipes that assisted with things from severe burns, to deep scarring. Most of the former thralls in the fort, himself included were extremely grateful to how much those ‘simple’ potions did. Those ‘beginner’ level potions were able to remove over 70% of the scars on his body, only the truly old and deep ones were there to stay. Not to mention how efficiently they helped with bruised bones and burns, recovery time was decreased to such an extent that the healers had to start being more agressive with getting patients to rest. With the way Istyar was eyeing his stump he has a feeling that having his right hand back is an actual possibility.
After the testing phase of the potions was done, the head healer of each of their territories was quietly brought to Himring and taught the new potions, ingredients care, brewing process, and application. Once done with their own territory, Ceutare went to Hithlum and taught it all to the healers there. Thankfully both Fingolfin and Fingon understood the need for discretion and took the proper precautions before spreading it to the rest of their territories. As far as it became known a healer approached Maedhros and Ceutare wanting to help the war efforts and this is how they knew to do so. Their only demand was to remain anonymous for fear of retribution, and asked if they could use their connections to spread this information further so the healer themselves wouldn’t have to. Many respected and understood the need for anonymity, considering how thorough Morgoth and his forces were in targeting talented individuals.

In the decade that followed Curufin and Celebrimbor worked diligently warding all the territories, including those of uncle Fingolfin and cousins Finrod and Aegnor. They also build each of them green houses once they 3 were given the option. The rest of their cousins were uninterested and Maedhros found himself not bothered. The fact that those self centered ego driven twats decided to endanger those under their care simply dismissing an offer from a Fëanorian is not his concern. He did his duty by offering, and providing a demonstration of how effective it is, what they do next is up to them.

They extanded an offer of sale and installment of the green houses, and the smaller wards stones to Círdan. Maedhros figured that the Sindar lord is someone they want to maintain good relations with; moreover, according to his brother there was no risk of exposure for his child. To his surprise Círdan was happy to order 4 green houses to his teritory, as well as an order of 11 dozen of the smaller ward stones. Thankfully they had an ‘explanation’ as to why they didn’t bother to offer the more complex system. Unlike Círdans’ territory the Noldor lands are landlocked, his terrain is srounded by so much water the warding system they developed would be in complete disharmony. Which is why they offered existing alternative of the smaller options to protect single structures instead. Thankfully Maedhros was telling him the truth regarding the existing warding system, he simply didn’t want them to create a different option and in the process expose his child to a Sindar lord that has a known close relations with a vala, not to mention Thingol. Even if the sindar would choose to study the ward stones, or green houses, Curufin and Celebrimbor utilize it in such a way that it looked like an elven creation. It was a good thing hinya had a book with standard home protections his brother and nephew were finally able to recalibrate for elves to power, even Ambarussar with their passing skills in song are able to power and activate them. Well.. passing for a Fëanorian.

What amused him was how excited Istyar was when he was able to come for short visits when he helped with the initial activation of the main warding stone in each territory.(Thank Eru that Curufin was able to create a necklace that hides Istyar’s powerful aura, otherwise none of them would have ever allowed for any of this, Fingolfin included.) Uncle Fingolfin was just as thrilled to finally have the little one around and was doing everything in his power to make the visit last as long as possible. They ended up making it an official visit and were there for 9 months, his seconds were not really bothered by his personal absence as much as they just wanted the elfling back home. Though he himself did not feel comfortable being in Hithlum, he couldn’t deny that it did his child good. It didn’t hurt to see his uncle content with having the little one around, it has been a long time since he had seen his uncle in such a good mood.

Fingon dispite his discomfort to any form of lying has actually used spreading Istyar’s status as justification for his and uncle Fingolfin antics. Well, that and attempting to get ahead of rumors tarring his elflings’ reputation. When Istyar first came to them he didn’t send any official announcement declaring he has a son; moreover, they placed gag orders about any information relating to hinya. This was due to of fear of attracting unwanted attention to him, before they have the means to negate it. According to Fingon since his child is already a miniature version of Káno (which is true, and his brother uses every chance to point out.) By not volunteering any information and simply introducing him as Istyar Nelyafinwëion they are making it seems like it is an emotionally charged issue. Since Nelyo’s fortress is on the front lines, and this is war time no one would be surprised by something that is obviously a familial tragedy, thus the lack of public announcement. Especially since it is clear the child was not hidden from close family, nor his people. Best of all it would justify the fëanorians obsession to upgrade protections, improving accesse to food supplies and making connections with ‘obscure’ healers. Fëanorians are nothing if not resourceful, especially when motivated

Funnily, and not at all surprising having 27 year old Istyar Nelyafinwëion coming to visit the high king of the Noldor while his uncle and cousin assist with the increasing the defenses of the city gave a positive touch to the relations between their people. It provided a show of trust that was unquestionable, along with an explanation to the increase in visits between the families. It probably didn’t hurt that Fingon and Fingolfin constantly bickered over who got to hold his child, or carry him on their shoulders, while the little goblin was constantly giggling. The rest of the court members kept looking at their antics with envy.

He was confused by Istyar’s handeling of Fingolfins court, his child normally shys away from social gatherings, chiefly in big groups. When he asked him about it the little one explained that he is aware they are setting a precedent for the line of Finwë to delay announcements of new members. Having a wide eyed motherless elfling with scary overprotective Fëanorians following him around is so bewildering for their people, that Maeglin’s announcement would be more palpable. It would ease the pressure from his cousin when it is his turn, easpcialy since he is a Noldor prince who is raised as a Sindar lord. Not to mention Maeglin is not at all used to so much attention, his father’s estate has less than 20 elfs. It did not miss his notice that Istyar understood a little too well what obstacles Maeglin is likely to face, they all thought about the political and social ramifications of the elflings parentage, but none of them registered what sort of a burden it would cause the elfling himself. It was times like these that he was curious if Eru would allow him a visit to the wizarding world to express his displeasure to what they put his child through. He did alert his uncle and soul brother to Istyar’s observation, neither were pleased; however, they were appreciative of the warning and what the elfling is trying to do.

Despite hinya putting on a show for the elfs of Himlad they took care to limit who came near the little one, the slightest contact with Istyar’s fëa would give away just how much more his child is. Though he was less concerned by that, no one in their right mind would go near someone else’s elfling, especially a fëanorian elfling, not even in Valanor where it was ‘safe’. He is fairly certain that himself and Istyar’s guards were a little too comfertable at playing their part, whenever the elfling was around the others gave them apprehensive looks as if they are some feral beasts. Curufin and Celebrimbor did not make it better with their own attitude.

It was funny to have hinya wear an emblem of a stag with a crown of lilies on his chain, it really confused his uncles’ courtiers. When asked they all proudly confirmed it was the official herald of Istyar Nelyafinwëion, dispite it being so distinctly different from the rest of the house of Finwë personal emblems. It was uncommon for a royal to choose an emblem at such a young age, and to have the rest of the family to approve of such a choice meant there was a significe to it. It was the source of speculation to such an extent that you could see elves try to figure out how to get the answer without getting chewed out.

Surprisingly it was one of Fingolfin’s marchwardens that asked Istyar why he chose the emblem, it helped that this particular elf is known for his lack of social skills. Istyar looked at him with his big sad green eyes holding back tears, telling him in the most subdued voice ‘I’m not just Nelyafinwëion’. His hinya wanted a piece of his birth parents with him, something they will never begrudge. Unfortunatly, that answer added more fire to the rumors of the grief stricken Maedhros Fëanorian, doomed to walk Arda alone until he could finally unite with his beloved in Valanor. His family being the chaos gremlins that they are used every chance they could to exacerbate that particular tale, even uncle Fingolfin. There is nothing to implicate, but he knows that Istyar did it on perpose, the menace has a talent of using just the right version of the truth to let you see things his way.

With Finrod and Aegnor the visits had to be done with far more discretion. Explaining the elfling son of Maedhros visit High-King Fingolfin was difficult but considering the brotherly relations between himself and the crown prince it was understandable. It didn’t hurt that he had the small ward stone to explain why he was less apprehensive about the journey. No one needed to know that he and Istyar joined the travelers the night before arrival thanks to Hedwig’s abilities. Having him bring his elfling to Nargothrond and Dorthonion when their houses were cordial at best was a whole other matter. It took a lot of work for both Curufin and Fingon to get his cousins to agree to the stipulations of the secrecy behind the activation process of the main warding stone. Though when he and Istyar arrived with Hedwig’s assistance they understood. None of them were willing to even consider word going around about his child’s abilities, between greed, jealousy, and worst of all Morgoth his hinya already has a target on his back, there is no need to make it worse. Despite both taking offense with Maedhros insistence that none of their other siblings being permitted in knowing about his child’s anything they understood the lack of trust. Neither of them is a parent, but it does not mean they did not appreciate his priorities. Especially when the only reason he is in this position is because they are trying to help protect their people.

They ended up staying 4 days in Nargothrond, where his child charmed Finrod and his advisor. The two actually looked devastated when it was time for him to leave. Not that he blamed them…

Visiting Dorthonion was a little more complex, Aegnor sent the rest of his house to visit Finrod (it was actually Finrod’s idea, he knew his brother and nephew and preferred not to risk it.) so by the time his child arrived there was no possibility of someone bursting in believing they were eintitled to more information than they actually were (the distrust between their houses was hard earned.) Aegnor was confused when Maedhros and his elfling showed up with an odd looking bird out of nowhere, it was amusing seeing him trying to figure out if he was of sound mind. And of course his little one charmed his cousin to such a degree that the elf forgot that he was supposed to be frosty with the rest of them.

After that things settled for a while, though they did add Finrod and Aegnor to the regular correspondence with his little one. It amazed him how charming his hinya truly is, the absured part of it all is that he doesn’t see it, always claimed that making friends is hard and confusing. The good thing was that they stayed closely in touch with Aredhel, and Maeglin. Her husband wasn’t thrilled but he didn’t interfere, it lead to an opening for the Sindar Lord to send a request to them through Aredhel for an order of a dozen small ward stones. It didn’t take a genius to realize that he either saw them in action or heard of them and wanted to study them. Especially after he himself extended the offer to add the more complex warding option to Nan-Elmoth.

According to Curufin he had several different experts including two dwarven masters he trusted study the small ward stones. None of them were able to get past the concealment defenses, not to mention the language barrier, Istyar is a genius insisting they use an unknown language from his birth realm to creat the protections. So he agreed to send his cousin the stones on the condition that her husband sign an agreement stating the if he managed to figure out the protections used on the stones he will provide Curufin a complete copy of the analysis and keep what ever he discovered to himself. Of course he then went on to inform her that they were aware of the identity of her lord husband, and their location but respected their decision and kept quiet. She might technically be their cousin, but just like Fingon she was their soul sister, and they would rather die than bring her and her family harm.

It took 2 years of correspondence but eventually it was Curufin who was able to figure out who it was that Aredhel married. They didn’t even need to send a letter of confrontation to their cousin, it was enough to have Hedwig eavesdrop on the conversations and confirm the name. The sad thing was once they figured out who it is they understood Aredhel’s reluctance of sharing his identity. Her husband wasn’t just any Sindar lord, but the unloved prince of Doriath. They knew better than anyone how the court can turn on a prince that was not in favor, no matter if they are the first born or not. The fact that he voluntarily left Doriath with a small contingency, and has better relations with the Dwarow than he does his own people did not go unnoticed. Curufin and Caranthir did some asking amongst their dwarve friends and from what they could tell Eöl kept his having a family quiet, so it is very likely Thingol’s court is unaware of his family. It was a disaster waiting to happen, and they figured it would be better if they did not exacerbate the situation, though uncle Fingolfin was itching for the moment he can acknowledge his grandson publically.

Funnily enough that letter lead to a ridiculous confrontation between Eöl and his brother at Nogrod, according to Celebrimbor the confrontation was top drama, and confused the dwarves on whether the two were actually elves, or just really tall beardless dwarves. It was amusing as according to Hedwig Eöl seemed to be less suspicious after the entire incident. Eöl and Curufin would never not dislike one another, but they both respected each other’s craft and prioritized Aredhel’s and Maeglin’s well being. It seemed Eöl was worried they would try to take his family only for his brother to curse him out in a variety of languages while making it clear that he will never infringe on his soul sister’s freedom. Their family just wanted to at least maintain regular communication, but they will never risk either Ardhel or Maeglin safety, for those two that seemed to be more than enough. So not long after that Aredhel sent back the contract signed, and he sent her a dozen small ward stones. It has been over 2 years since, and according to Maeglin’s and Aredhel’s letters he still hasn’t figured out how the small ward stones worked, it has been driving him mad.

Now they are coming up to yonya’s 30th begetting day and he got everyone to winter with them and be part of the celebration, even uncle Fingolfin cleared time ahead of schedule to make sure he could be there. (The court was fairly understanding considering they all adored the little Fëanorian princling as they come to call Istyar.) What surprised him was that Finrod and Aegnor came, he sent the invitation but honestly did not expect them to winter at Himring. There was also a surprise for his uncle and child that he was very much looking forward to. Thanks to the open communication for the past 16 years along with the promise to allow him to study the warding on Himring as long as he signed the secrecy contracts, Eöl agreed for a 5 days visit with the assistance of Hedwig. He did have them promise that all three of them would arrive back safely to Nan Elmoth under the laws of guest rights. Maedhros understood the sort of chance he was being offered, he refused to risk anything going wrong. Thankfully Laerian, his head hunter and, Mylia his forge mistress are Sindar and were able to go over everything and make sure they didn’t say or do anything unintentional to cause offense.

When the time came, and all the guests arrived his little one couldn’t contain himself from joy, he loved being surrounded by family, not to mention the mischief he got in to with the rest of those in the castle. Istyar was particularly happy when Maeglin finally arrived, Aredhel and Eöl didn’t even take offense with how his little gremlin was excited to see their son and as such barely even noticed them. It didn’t hurt that their child was just as happy but was better at containing his behavior. (Considering Istyar was turning 30, and Maeglin was already 58 the difference in maturity was understandable.)

He did insist on a quieter evening meal that night for those of house Fingolfin. Initially when he informed Fingon, and uncle Fingolfin that they would be having a private dinner in their rooms they were confused, but Fingon knew him well enough to go along. (the last thing Maedhros wanted was to alert Celegorm and Curufin, that reunion/meet was going to be emotional enough as it is.) if the reactions he sensed from his connection with Fingon he knew he made the right decision. His soul brother was sending him overwhelming waves of joy and wonder. Though the reunion between the sons of Fëanor and their soul sister was no less emotional, not to mention the joy of finally meeting their nephew in person. Poor Maeglin was bombarded with so many uncles wanting to know everything about him he ended up attaching himself to Istyar. His little meance was very good at maneuvering conversations to Maeglin’s comfort zones, even Eöl was charmed. The whole encounter the Sindar prince was baffled by them all.

Three days later on his begetting day his little menace marched to breakfast with a decleration. “Today we are celebrating my 30th begetting day. As such Atar permitted me to choose the first activity, for that I declare an all-out prank war, the rules are the standard; the forge, kitchen, and healing halls are off limits. All pranks must be easily undone. Teams can be no greater than 5. Healer Ceutare will control the area for those not interested in participating. The war shall end by the time evening meal is intended to be served. As the one who’s begetting day it is I get first dibs on choosing my team, as such I choose cousins Maeglin, and Celebrimbor, and uncles Curufin and Eöl on my team.” (If Eöl was surprised at being acknowledged as an uncle he said nothing.) The cousins knew better than to argue, each grabbed their atar, and followed his child. Before leaving the dinning area the little Gremlin turned and looked at them with an angelic smile saying. “Don’t expect the forge masters to go easy on you.”

The madness that followed was unparalleled, anyone that was not on duty that day grabbed a team and joined the chaos. His uncle actually sat with his chief healer Ceutare watching as Himring devolved in what was probably the most crazed sight he had ever witnessed, and he grew up with Fëanor and Findis. It was amusing to realize that Curufin and Eöl were working together because Maeglin and Istyar were so excited and wanted to get everyone. (Later that evening Aredhel quietly thanked him for how happy Maeglin was, the child just couldn’t stop smiling all day.) Watching Celegorm, Fingon, Ambarussa, and Aredhel trying to get the “forge masters” as the elflings decided to call themselves was the funniest thing to ever happen. Finrod and Aegnor joined forces with his own forge master Mylia and two of her smiths, they actually gave a good fight. Though the true mastermind was Caranthir, the devious troll that he is got Handion his head of house and 3 of his elfs to help him tare down several teams with horrific colores. Maglor creating random items to make odd sounds that chase you around was a true surprise. (Allowing him accesse to Istyar’s library caused disturbing results.)

By the time everyone arrived at dinner no one was the original color, nor were their clothing in the correct form. Some were actually sparkling, Celebrimbor and Istyar were painted blue being chased by a lute playing children’s songs but neither seemed bothered. Poor Huan was covered in pink braids, and Celegorm and everyone who were on his team were a terrible shade of orange making odd hissing sound with every step. Dinner itself was full of laughs where everyone shared the various antics of their day. If uncle Fingolfin spent the meal between hugging his grandson, and his daughter no one said a word. And if Eöl didn’t seem as bothered being surrounded by them all, well it was no one’s business. Either way his son was crying tears from laughter at what ever story he was hearing and Maedhros couldn’t be happier.

He knew that it was not going to last forever, but for now he was really happy to be surrounded by his family, celebrating his henya’s 30th begetting day.
