Peace in Paris

Christmas was special everywhere but there wasn’t anywhere else she would rather be. They wandered down a cobbled street in the heart of the city. It was truly remarkable.  A few snowflakes began to fall from the sky. Snow felt so much more magical today. She caught a snowflake on her tongue. A childish pursuit unquestionably but she didn’t care.

“You are acting quite mad,”

Eloise felt that she might scream or skip at any moment.

She simply felt quite mad.

“Benedict, it’s Christmas though!”

It wasn’t even just Christmas though. It was Christmas in Paris. It was a few days before Christmas and they would soon return to society. Paris was a hub of beauty, art, culture and the tiny slice of freedom that she had always so desperately craved so she would enjoy every second.

She suspected that it was only Benedict truly understood what freedom meant to her. He had often been seeking his own. Neither of them quite fitted in properly. Benedict had brought her here and no-one else knew. Eloise found herself in a deep frustration for most of her life but for once she was content.  She was grateful that it wasn’t her job to babysit Hyacinth with the Christmas decorations. The prickly holly could put itself up this year. Mother still thought her to be residing with Francesca. The pretense would be kept up for a couple more days.

“Well, stop acting like they don’t have snow in Scotland then!”

“It’s not just Paris or the snow, it’s my freedom. I don’t have that in Scotland nor anywhere else in Britain for that matter.”

"Paris has always brought me peace too."
