Chapter Two

Severus Snape feels ten feet tall. For some reason he thought Hermione Granger would turn him down. It's been a joy to see her return to Hogwarts, this time as a teacher, and to see her find her place within the enchanted castle walls. He's watched from afar as she settles into routines and become a beloved member of staff. Her students love her. The other professors speak highly of her.

Surely she didn't accept his invitation just to be nice? Surely he didn't misread the situation? He thinks she likes him... at least a little bit. He may have to work hard to move their relationship from work colleagues to... something more.

The rest of the week drags by slowly. Whenever he and Granger meet in the hallways, they exchange a small smile. There isn't time to talk in depth. But finally, Saturday morning arrives. The great hall is fairly empty -- just a few other teachers and a handful of yawning students. Snape is too nervous to eat much, but he manages some toast and marmalade. When he sees that Professor Granger has finished, he nods at her and they leave the room silently.

Snape faces her in the front hall and surveys her outfit, pleased to see that she's dressed mindfully and warmly. He lifts his wand just a touch.

"Do you mind if I make a couple of small changes? It's cold out there, and we'll need to stay warm."

Hermione nods in assent, grinning, and with a swish and a flick of Professor Snape's wand her sweater, cloak, and pants are covered by a very good warming charm. Her boots undergo the same treatment, and she wiggles her toes thankfully as they step outside.

Snow has fallen during the night, and Hogwarts looks even prettier than usual, with ice on the windowpanes, and snow dotting the towers and spires. Christmas here is one of her favorite school memories, and Hermione is so glad that the holiday break is right around the corner. She's looking forward to relaxing and reading. She trudges behind Professor Snape, walking in his footprints as he advised, and into the deep forest they go.
