Chapter 3

Having sat with Cho and Padma and Micheal for breakfast she said her goodbyes and went about tracking Draco down. She first tried the Slytherin table, even gathering the courage to ask an older student if she had seen him. The older girl had told her that he had already had breakfast, and was probably down in the common room.

Standing in front of the Slytherin common room entrance she was unsure of what to do, the painting’s inhabitant was no where to be found, so she settled on simply knocking until someone answered, luckily a student soon appeared, and soon after Draco was there. He stepped out, closing the door behind himself.

“Cousin!” He smiled. “Im sorry you didn’t get placed in Slytherin.” He said in a surprisingly sympathetic tone.

“Don’t worry, Ravenclaw is great! Our common room is super pretty.” Helena replied easily. The two quickly settled into an easy exchange, sharing what had happened in the past night and morning without one another. They soon moved to the now empty great hall to write a letter to Lucius and Narcissa. Helena felt slightly nervous as she wrote out that she had been sorted into Ravenclaw, she knows they had been hoping for them both to placed into Slytherin. But she couldn’t exactly keep it a secret. Once the two were happy with it’s contents the two walked to the owlery, only getting slightly lost, to send it home.

It wasn’t until the next morning the Malfoy family owl appeared, holding a bundle of envelopes, all four dropped into her hands.

Micheals voice exclaimed. “Crikey your’e popular- four letters!”

“I don’t think they are all for me- one from my Uncle and one from my Aunt. The other two are for my cousin, they must have written separately.” She mused, placing the two for herself into her bookbag.

“I’m going to go pass these on to Draco, Ill see you in class!” She chimed sweetly at the group.

Walking over to the Slytherin table she felt herself on the receiving end of some looks, she understood that there was a lack of different house friendships, at least with Slytherin and other houses. She hoped that that didn’t affect her and Draco, Helena also would like to keep Blaise and Pansy as friends. Sliding onto the empty space next to Draco she interrupted his conversation with a polite cough, him instantly turning.

“Helena-Whats- Letters!” His words came out somewhat stunted as his train of thought changed quickly, as she handed the letters over to him.

“I’m going to go read mine before class, I’ll see you later.” Disappearing out of the Great hall she quickly found an empty corridor, settling into a nook in the wall she opened Narcissa’s letter first. The letter read sweetly, Narcissa’s usual formality in writing apparent, she congratulated her on her placement into Ravenclaw, stating that she always knew she was intelligent. The rest of the letter asked more questions, and told her to write at the end of her first week to describe how it had been. She smiled slightly to herself, happy that Narcissa didn’t seem disappointed in her house.

Moving onto Lucius’s letter the envelope dropped out a letter and a small velvet pouch, surprised she opened to letter first. She was surprised to read his immediate congratulations on her placement into Ravenclaw, stating like Narcissa that he always knew she was smart, and that he imagined she would only grow in her intelligence. He went on to state that he hoped she hadn’t been worried to tell them, that House pride could make a person state that their house was the only viable option, and that after a few years she would be the same. She laughed audibly, his humour always dry. His letter finished with his instructions to open her gift, stating that it was only right for her to have something in the Ravenclaw style. Her small fingers clumsily pulled at the velvet bag’s string closure, a pair of blue hairclips, encrusted with blue and silver gems, her eyes instantly misted as she stared down at them, surprise evident on her face.

Gifts were not unusual from the Malfoys, but something so thoughtful… It was lovely. Sliding them into her hair on the right side she stood, peering into a nearby window to see them.

A voice cut through.

“A gift from home?” She glanced over in the direction of the voice, a boy, older than her, Hufflepuff as the tie showed was standing there.

“Yes, my uncle sent them.” She replied, voice slightly nervous, gulping down her anxiety.

“They’re nice.. I’m Cedric by the way. Cedric Diggory.” He smiled at her. “First year I’m assuming?” He asked nicely.

“Yes- Im Helena Rosier.” She quickly replied.

„Are you enjoying Hogwarts so far?” Cedric asked.

“It’s Great!” She easily replied. “Although I do keep getting lost.” She admitted.

“Don’t worry, you’ll start remembering you’re e way round soon enough.” He reassured.

“What year is it you’re in by the way?”

“Second year.” He replied kindly, before the bell tower started ringing out.

“Class-what do you have first?” He asked kindly.

Fumbling her parchment out from her bag that had her classes on she read out Charms. Cedric grinned, stating that his class was near there and that he could help her find her way.  The conversation between them was easy, mostly filled with Helena’s curious questions, that were happily answered by the slightly older boy.

Arriving at her classroom she offered him a goodbye and thank you as he left for his own class. Looking around as other students arrived she gulped her nervousness down, praying that she would see Cho and Padme soon. Walking into the classroom the Professor was fussing over some papers and others were studying the blackboard with a seating plan drawn out on, squinting she worked out her seat, treading over to the back row of the right side of the room.

Placing her books down Helena turned to offer a hello to her seat neighbour.

“Hello” Faux confidence filled her as she smiled at the boy, who she quickly remembered as Harry Potter. He smiled back at her, introducing himself back. Helena, secretly happy that she wasn’t able to make conversation as the professor started talking. She felt uncomfortable, sat next to a boy whose parents famously died at the hands of a man that her father had willingly followed.

The next hour passed slowly, the beginners spell not proving easy. She knew people had their talents lay in different places, something Narcissa had explained numerous times. The rest of the day passed by in an excited blur, Cho, Padme and Helena going from class to class eagerly.
