Could it have been worth it?
Summary
Regulus Arcturus Black has been left by his brother as the one and only heir to The Noble and Ancient House of Black. In a family that only wants him as a weapon in the upcoming war, what is he meant to do when he slowly starts to realize he deserves better? Or when his brother has entirely abandoned him to a life of torture, for some other friend (*cough cough, James), and a that boyfriend of his, forever?Or...A miscellaneous slow burn Jegulus fic where either James or Sirius find out that Regulus nearly died, and James ends up (trying) to help him get the fuck out of Grimwald Palace, and i just might end up killing Reg. Who knows? :)
Note
Im so fucking sorry for any mistypes or mistakes, this is my first fic I have ever posted, and I'm proudly my own beta reader. And if anything ends up being typed in another language for a bit, and i completely butcher it, oopsies. WISH YOU LUCK! Also, james is probably really fucking mentally ill, but we will cross that bridge when we get there.

How it began...

December 22, 1972

"Shit! Sirius, can you help me with this? I shattered mom's vase and you know she'll curse me if I  break one more thing." Regulus yelled to Sirius, whom he in the kitchen. " You in there?" He searched all around the house for his older brother, checking absolutely everywhere, before returning to his room, where his brother was now lying down on his back, staring at the ceiling they painted stars on. When they were quite young, around 9 and 10, they painted the first of the stars, starting with Reg's constellation, Leo, and the star in it that he was named after. They painted all of their family's stars and constellations, and the family members Sirius and him liked the least, got put in corners, and if they really loved them, they were painted right in the center of the room. For example, their cousin andromeda was closer towards the middle, with the two of them, Canis Major, The Great Dog and Leo, The Lion.

"Sirius, are you okay? You've been distancing yourself lately, since I started at Hogwarts. Is it about Barty? Listen I know you don't really like him bu-" Sirius interrupted him, not a rare occurrence, but the tone of his voice, quiet and detached, worried Regulus, "I'm leaving, Reggie."

Regulus chuckled, there's no way that Sirius actually MEANS that, right? He wouldn't ever leave. Right? "Ha. Ha. Very funny, Sirius. You are kidding, aren't you?"

Sirius looked down, refusing to meet Regulus' eyes. "I'm not. I'm really not kidding. I'm moving in with the Potters. They invited me at the beginning of the year, and I've been thinking about it for a while. I want to go. I'm going. I'm so sorry, Reg. They are coming to get me tonight, and unless you plan on going with me, this is goodbye."

A single tear ran down his face, and he willed the others not to. "Y-you can't leave. I wont let you. No, Sirius. I've always been there for you, and you have for me. You're only 12. I can't come with you. If mom catches you...who knows what could happen."

The older boys expression suddenly turned to stone, straight faced and serious. "If Walpurga catches me while I'm leaving, you know damn well I may as well be dead right there. That's why I'm asking you to distract her. Don't let her find out. Please. Just once. I helped you all your childhood, you owe me one."

The last words of that sentence cut too deep, for they were far too true for him. Every time that Regulus said something wrong, or broke something, and their mother got mad, Sirius would always do something worse to make sure that he never got hurt.

Which meant Sirius had endured some of the worst torture know to wizard kind. Unforgivable curses. The three worst spells ever. If caught using them, you could be thrown in Azkaban forever.

But the being born into the Black family, you might as well have signed a contract saying you can't tell anyone of any legal power about the abuse that went on in the household. Honestly, in the higher families of the sacred 28, it was assumed.

As was uh...incest. In order to keep the wizarding blood toujours pur you can only have kids with other purebloods in the sacred 28, without being considered a disgrace and being, to be put simply, disowned. It is horrid, but that's the way of the world, right?
