Finding One's Place in the Pack
As they continued to follow Hyunjin through the safe zone of Mokpo, they kept their heads down.
Well, Minho did more than Seungmin. Minho could already feel the burning curious, and questioning gazes of the survivors that were now calling the place home. He could almost feel their surprise. How did they feel about seeing an omega? Was he the only one? And while he was curious to look, he was also suddenly very subconscious of being stared at. He was certain this was a normal occurrence with new arriving survivors. But, it could be less intense. They should know this. He hoped it was curbed in the future. And he had yet another thing he wanted to search for, but was too afraid to.
Him.
He could ask, but he wasn't sure Hyunjin would know the answer. And likely, both betas would question him as to why he wished to know. He was not ready to relay the trauma of nearly being raped by the alpha. He supposed he'd learn in time. Their boots crunched softly on the dirt beneath their feet, even as they headed to a large house. Hyunjin spoke as they climbed the steps to the porch of the house, "I gotta report in to the alphas. I guess I'm introducing you two, now. Probably for the best. They're my pack. And since you are as well, best they met two new members of their pack. Will make them happy."
They nodded subtly as they followed him. The door opened with only a minor creak. Seungmin took hold of it, letting him go in between both betas. The sound of their boots sounded on the hardwood flooring. Following Hyunjin into a fairly large sized room with the windows covered, yet open for fresh air. They only paused long enough, for Hyunjin to gently rasp his knuckles on the wooden door frame, "Hyunjin! You're back a might bit sooner than we expected."
Hyunjin huffed a little, before he made a reoccurring argument he must make frequently, "We seriously need to work on communications around here. If you'd just let me go and raid for walkie talkies, or an abandoned military outpost for radios. We could then have better communications, as a result."
"That would imply we had working radios, of all kinds. Until we can get to that stage, we'll have to just bite our claws."
Hyunjin hummed, caving on the issue for the time being, "Fine. For now. Other than some supplies, I got you two new wolves."
The sound of a chair swiveling about a little, came to him, "Oh? So I see."
Hyunjin smirked, and announced, "And the best news is, they're our packmates." He gently shifted to the side, and brought his hand to his back. Seeming to sense he was keeping a bit more submissive than was normal for him. Eyes on the wood flooring. Feeling rather afraid. Feeling the reassurance in Hyunjin's hand, Minho finally pulled his eyes from the floor. And took in the two alphas seated at the desks in the room. Both muscular and brawny. Red eyes, and dark hair. Both rather handsome, though not at all Minho's type. As the flare of recognition past between them all, Hyunjin spoke, "Nearly lost them to a zombie. But, they're here now. And perfect timing too."
They nodded, before the one to his right spoke with a nod, "Thank you, Hyunjin. Best get the supplies you managed to collect to the storage house. Then write your official report."
Hyunjin nodded, before he turned and grinned at them, "I'll see you two around. You'll adjust to this place before long."
Both nodded, listening as Hyunjin left to take care of his tasks. Now alone with the two alphas, the one to his left spoke in a soft and calm voice. As compared to the other one, "It's nice to finally have two more of our pack join us. We've waited, patiently. I'm Bang Chan." He then held his hand out to the other, "And this is Seo Changbin. We sort of run this place. As best we can."
They nodded, before Seungmin spoke, "Nice to finally be with pack. I'm Kim Seungmin." He held his hand out to him, "And this is Lee Minho."
Chan nodded, as Changbin spoke, "Pleasure." He sat back, crossing his arms and emphasizing his muscles. Unintentionally, "We'll have plenty of time to better get to know one another. Zombies willing, of course. As you're our packmates, you get to sleep in this house with us. It's a touch crowded. But, it's the pack house. Since you're both new here, you can spend some time adjusting and acclimating."
Minho hummed, nodding a little before he inquired, "I'm the only omega in this pack as of now. You sure it's wise to be so packed in one small house?"
Chan nodded slowly, "I understand your concern, Minho. But I assure you, we won't do anything like that. My omega's still out there. I know it. And Changbin's not really interested, either. And given you two aren't exactly letting it be known you're more than pack, your mates are still out there as well. Fighting. Maybe trying to find you, themselves."
Minho smirked, "Okay, you have a fair point."
Changbin spoke, gently rocking a little, "For now, we'll let you two get some rest. You've had a long journey getting here. In the coming days, we'll show you the ropes of this place. And then you can decide what you'd like to do for our safe zone. Maybe even give it a name."
Minho nodded, as he and Seungmin left to explore the pack house. To find where they'd be comfortable sleeping. And just familiarizing themselves with their new surroundings.
And finally get some rest, feeling safe with a pack at last.
//
Both stood, silently waiting before their pack approved and pronounced head and pack alphas.
Hyunjin stood just behind them. Standing in the typical military stance. Hands clasped behind his back. Feet shoulder length apart. Tall and sure. Confident. Chan folded his hands before him, and rest them on the desk he personally sat at. Changbin was sat back, booted feet resting on his own desk. Hands behind his head. Indicating relaxation and feeling at ease. Chan's eyes bore into Seungmin first. Indicating his attention was on the beta-alpha, "I read Hyunjin's report. And you've also informed us. You are hoping to become a doctor of sorts."
Seungmin nodded, "As best I can. I won't have the formal education, but-" He shrugged, "Who can get that anymore? I know I have a lot more to learn, but I am studying my ass off. Have all winter."
Chan gave a soft smirk, before he nodded, "So I noticed. I am sure Hyunjin informed you, we are severely lacking in any medical personal here at the safe zone. This does mean however, you won't really be leaving the save zone much after this. Not even for supply runs. That's Hyunjin's job. Much as we hate sending him out alone, no one else is willing to join him. Cowards. We got plenty of alphas, and they refuse to join a beta."
Hyunjin huffed, "Maybe they just don't like the idea of a beta-omega bossing them around."
Chan shrugged, "Who knows. And frankly, I don't give a damn. They don't want to, fine. They can pull their weight in other ways." He turned his attention back to Seungmin, "Are you, comfortable with giving up fighting off zombies? For however long we manage to make this safe zone stand?"
Seungmin shrugged, "I won't mind. As long as Hyunjin can get what I ask if possible, I should be fine. I'll mostly be dealing with the sick and weak for a while. But injuries will occur." He then held up his bat, "But you can pry this from my cold dead hands. This here bat got me back to my apartment, then out again when this all started. I am not leaving this behind. Never know when it will come in handy."
Chan smirked, giving him a hand gesture to calm down a little, "I had no intention of demanding you surrender either weapon. I want you to keep both. Safe, and hidden as necessary. Easy to access and get to, as well. But they are of last resort for you. If you're willing to be our safe zone's doctor, you can start as soon as you're ready. The house that will be used for your medicinal practice is already designated for you. No one's bothered to take that position up, either. But, they will be glad for a doctor. Even one learning as he goes."
Seungmin nodded, smirking most pleased, "Good. If that is all, I best get to my hospital and see what all needs to be done."
Chan smirked, but nodded, "Of course. But, before you do-." Seungmin raised an eyebrow, as Chan sighed, "I am trying to be a fair leader here. Not just as your head alpha. But one of the heads trying to keep the survivors within these walls, safe. While we build up to survive a while until our inevitable fall, I have to do what I can. If I get a bit pushy, don't take it too hard. I just, want to do my best for us all. I also have a bit of a military background. I wish not to discuss it further, at this time. But I felt it would be best to run this place a little more like a military installment. So each day, you have to write a report. Even if nothing really happened, or anything significant transpired. I just want to know what's going on. And what I may be able to do to improve things."
Seungmin nodded, "I understand that. I can certainly make do with that."
Chan smiled softly, nodding, "If that is all, you best get to your new hospital."
Seungmin nodded, before he turned to leave. He nodded to Minho once, then left the room and house, "See you bitches at sunset."
Minho smirked, even as Hyunjin snorted. This left just the two omega types, and their guiding alphas. Chan's gaze now bore into him, "Now, where to put you."
Minho frowned at this, before commenting with a small bit of biting snark. Indicating he didn't like what he even suggested for himself, "Let me guess, somewhere I can remain your precious omega treasure. Safe, and well guarded."
Chan smirked, before calming his mind, "What do you take me for, Minho? While it would be best to keep you safe in such a fashion, I'm not going to be that kind of alpha. Imprisoning you for your body. You have yet to find your alpha. I know it. While it would be bad to lose you and all hope for a stable future, I'm not risking treating you like that. You're more than that. So, what is it you would like to do?"
Minho blinked a moment, before he gave a soft smile. Pleased that Chan was smart about this. He gently gestured towards Hyunjin, "I was hoping to work with him. I farmed at my grandparent's for a year after the outbreak. I only left because I was ready to find community. And maybe and hopefully my pack." He shrugged again, voice growing fainter, "And I had hoped to find my alpha as well. I'll never give up finding him." He spoke with more confidence, "But, I am not some mere omega anyone can push around and use as they wish. I am a bit tired of farming. Yes, I'll do it if I have to and can. To help out, and make sure we have enough for next winter. But I wouldn't mind going on runs with Hyunjin. At least this way, he no longer goes alone. We'll have one another's backs. And maybe, we'll find more survivors. Maybe even the rest of our pack."
Chan hummed, nodding as he listened. Changbin's gaze shifted to Hyunjin, before inquiring of him "You okay with that? He's also older than you, as you recall."
Hyunjin shrugged his shoulders, arms crossed over his chest as he stood waiting, "You're the one emphasizing I need company out there. And I agree. If he wants, why deny him?" He smirked to Minho, "We can discuss who's boss later. For now, I can teach you a bit how to fight and shoot a gun. Though buried deep inside you, is a fierce omega warrioress. Channel your inner Luna, and you'll be just fine."
Minho smiled fondly at that, even as Changbin shared a look with Chan, "Even though you're a giving alpha, you're still head alpha. Your call's the final authority. Even in this upturned world, there needs to be a chain of command. And some level of hierarchy. And even Minho won't argue with his head alpha. It's our nature. We cannot ignore it. No matter the world we live in these days."
Chan nodded slowly, "I know. I think it really depends on you, Minho. So I'm offering a little bit of a test, if you will. After Hyunjin gives you the quick run down of gun handling, and shooting in the emergency you have to use it. You both can head out for a supply run."
He turned the map around as Hyunjin drew closer. Gently guiding Minho up beside him, to look at some red marks Chan has made, "Hyunjin's been key in helping us determine where we can get supplies from. And where it's been picked clean. We have to really start stepping it up. He's also informed of a few other safe zones that have cropped up in the winter. We're in a race to get as much as we can. So, you'll be heading here. It's a bit further out. I know you two have walked a decent set of miles to get here. So, you'll be taking the truck. Only the pack may use it for things like this. Some mechanics have managed to find a way to extend it's life for now. What happens when we run out of useable gas?" He shrugged, "Hard to really say. Get what you can. But we're asking for more than just food and medical supplies this time around. Bring back any machinery and metal you can."
Minho looked down at the map a bit, before he nodded, "Thank you."
Chan smiled warmly at him, "You're welcome. Once you're done with your quick gun training, you both may go. And, be careful."
Both nodded, before Hyunjin gently pulled him along, "Come on, hyung. Let's get you trained!"
Minho smirked and went with him, while giving Chan a nod of appreciation and gratitude.
//
Having become a runner and something of a fighter, Minho had actually grown in confidence.
Long enough, to determine that he was not in the safe zone. He had breathed a massive sigh of relief at that. He really hoped to never run into him again. If he did, he wanted his alpha with him. He didn't know why he wanted his alpha with him. He knew how to shoot a gun now. He knew how to fight and duck. But, something about him had Minho scared. His wolf cowering and shivering. He wanted his alpha to face his past.
However, he was now facing another alpha that seemed to think he had authority over him. He'd made it clear he did not like the fact Minho was going on the supply runs with Hyunjin. Having even told him he would be wise and smart to stay in the safe zone. And find a mate to start repopulating. Even said many alphas were present to help out. Minho had pulled a right unfriendly face. But before he could scratch the alpha's face for his comment, Hyunjin had seemed to pop out of nowhere. And told the alpha that repopulating had to wait, until they knew they could survive the new world order. Without sufficient supplies and food, Minho and the pup would not survive. And their blood would be on the safe zone's hands. So, pups were off the table until a better future.
Hopefully.
Minho had growled and told the other alpha that even if he wanted that, it certainly wasn't going to be with him. He then proceeded to actually vent to the pack that evening at dinner, about the alpha. To the amusement of their own alphas. Seungmin had looked a bit pinched. As if he wanted to give the alpha a nice clock upside the head. He then expressed concerns for pregnancies at this time. And reiterated what Hyunjin had said. Pups were off the table. It was too risky. So much could go wrong. And with the zombies liable to mutate, evolve, and become more dangerous, it was asking for trouble. They were in no position yet to attempt repopulating.
Hyunjin then informed Minho he has had similar issues, with some other alphas. Knowing he was a beta-omega, they didn't like he went on supply runs either. But promptly shot them down by saying that none of the other alphas were willing to go on the supply runs. And while it only helped a little, Minho still found he could do without alphas like that. And it made his wish and desire for his actual alpha, to grow.
Often, he would lay awake at night. The bed was as soft as possible. And while the sheets were a bit scratchy and itchy on his omega skin, it wasn't what gave him trouble sleeping at night. Either he was plagued with nightmares of him, or deep longing for his alpha. He felt it. The long lonely calling in his soul. The black spot in his heart that yearned to be filled. He wanted his alpha. He was actually afraid that he was hoping for an alpha, that may actually already be dead. That, he was already gone. And Minho just didn't know it or sense it yet. Made only worse, by the slowly increasing number of survivors that made their way to their safe zone. Each one he would watch. Eagerly looking for the one that was his alpha. To no avail. He tried to stay calm and wait. But, he had trouble doing so. He just wanted his alpha.
He was thankfully distracted by his pack, and his supply runs.
He'd become very adept in fighting. Often actually pinning Hyunjin at times. And had even trained a new younger wolf. A beta-alpha. A nice balance. But he was very young, and clearly a bit on the frightened side inside. But, the three now did supply runs together. And it was going well. And when they weren't training or going on supply runs, he was busy watching the slow burn that was Changjin. He saw their glances at one another. The softness in their expressions and tones towards one another. But, they had yet to actively act on them. Minho didn't mind. He was certain he could use all this as fuel for later. After all, that was what packs did. Teased one another relentlessly over romance. And while the zombie apocalypse was never the best of times for love, relationships, and sex, they really had no choice in the end.
Minho paused, hands gripping the metal of the truck. A hand on his shoulder. He turned with a raised eyebrow. Seungmin. The beta-alpha had grown a little. Looking smart and very much like a doctor. He'd been doing surprisingly well as the safe zone's doctor. It was certainly his style. No one had yet to apprentice with him, but that was fine. He seemed content to be on his own for the time being. Minho raised an eyebrow at him, as he handed him a sheet of paper, "If you happen to stumble upon any of this, I'd appreciate it. I know medicine is becoming just as hard to find as food supplies out there, but whatever you can get me."
Minho nodded, taking the paper from him. He raised an eyebrow, "Someone raiding your medical supplies, Minnie?"
Seungmin shook his head, "No. Bit of a nasty flu going about. I can't exactly give them flu shots. I don't have those in surplus. But I am managing with some antibiotics, and anti-inflammation capsules. But I am not in surplus. Whatever you find in general, is fine. But I expressly need any of these. Guess those old medical books from K.Y. are coming in clutch. Wonder if they're watching me use their books now. Pleased."
Minho smiled, "You do fine without a degree, Minnie. Don't forget that. We'll do what we can. Just remember to prepare the beds for any possible newcomers we bring in."
Seungmin nodded and called in, "Good luck, Jinni."
Hyunjin nodded, as Minho got in. After closing the door, Seungmin turned and walked back to his medical facility. Wordlessly, the three in their truck made for their next supply run.
Minho's wish to finally find and meet his alpha, was about to come true.
Finally.
