Tension Like My Bow's String

His fingers worked the laces, tying them so his new boots remained firmly on his feet.

His black ear flickered, listening for signs of any danger. For any potential zombies coming this way. He still could not figure it. He'd been walking a good deal of time. Trying to find a location to head for. Just, any direction. He had lost track of time, and sense of direction. Having allowed nature and the gods to guide him where they saw fit. To guide him to whatever they had in store for him.

He'd sworn he was dead.

The heat almost unbearable.

He supposed the a/c had helped most alphas forget just how hot it could be in the summer time. They would have to readjust. Though with nature reclaiming much of the land they had terraformed, it could cool things down. The asphalt acting as a heat magnet. Making it even more exhausting for alphas. He had only woken up from his heat dazed state, when he'd fallen to the ground. He had looked to see what had caught him. He wasn't feeling any teeth gnawing on him. It had alarmed him a little. He really had needed to take a breather somewhere. To regain some strength before pressing on. He'd die by the jaws of a zombie if he didn't.

He looked to see a zombie had been his downfall. Well, shit. However, he noticed its head was smashed in. Having been put from its misery. After taking a few to wipe the sweat from his forehead, he'd glanced around. He noticed this was a small military outpost. Having been abandoned for any number of legitimate reasons. He then noticed all the corpses lying about him. All zombies. Their heads thoroughly smashed in. Deciding to take his chance at a respite, Yunho had slipped into the bunker. There, he guzzled some of his water.

Unwise, but he was exhausted.

He'd then sealed the door for safety, and proceeded to get some rest. The recovery had been a little slow. Keeping him there for a few days. But once his strength had returned, he slowly investigated the small outpost. He found plenty of weapons still, and other necessities. Though the MREs were gone. Taken. And based on the state of the crates, raided by survivors. Not taken with the military. Uncertain about everything, Yunho had gotten an arrow ready. While he did have his blunt force trauma weapon, he was still endlessly attached to his bow and arrows. But his sweep led to nothing. Just corpses, and a cleared out outpost.

With a sigh, Yunho had decided to make do with what he had. He changed his trousers into the military cargo pants, and even swapped his sneakers for some military style boots. He'd also managed to find some fingerless gloves on his route. Made pulling the string of his bow easier on his calloused fingers. After checking everything a multitude of times, he pressed on. Making for what he could make in the distance of some homes. With any luck, he could raid them. Get supplies. Maybe even make one his safe house.

But as he made his way through the small residential location, he noticed another lack of zombies. Though the smell let him know, that they had been taken out. The homes had their doors wide open. Indicating they were raided.

Well, fuck.

Still, he did all he could to find something. Anything to give him hope. He wasn't sure he could press on without more supplies. He then happened upon a house. It looked barricaded. Boarded up. Huh. No one else had had the time. The windows were blacked out, and the door was sealed shut. Could be, that it was a massive zombie trap. Hey, he knew some would risk it for such a thing. Make it out without having to take out too many zombies. All kinds of reasons, really. With an arrow notched in place, he carefully made his way to the front door. Ready, for anything. Just as he came to the front door, it swung open. A crowbar swung at him. He stepped back. Easily avoiding a head injury, and aimed his arrow at the other.

He paused.

An omega!

Alone, by the looks of it. He was growling, eyes flaring. Yunho sniffed a little. While scents were getting hard to distinguish beneath the sweat, dirt, and grim, he could tell that this omega was alone. And that the entire home was his.

How was he to do this?

//

He'd been enjoying the peace and quiet.

Sleeping. Well, more like snoozing. Eyes lidded, but aware of his surroundings. Unwilling to let his guard down. He was also making plans. Debating where he'd go next for a supply run. Once his current stash was running low. He also had to consider, how he'd get there. And back. Hopefully, within the same day. He still didn't want to leave his old home and safe house unprotected. But, he also didn't want to risk taking a car. He could not, and would not be able to handle that many zombies alone. Even if he had unleashed his true warrioress.

But given his pension for being organized and scheduled, he knew it would be some time until that happened. He supposed he was worried, about the eventual boredom. He'd have to figure out things to do to occupy his time. And no, he wasn't going to dare try and clean the house. Even if he was itching to do so. It wouldn't matter, in the end. Not unless he could occupy it with a pack. And he seriously doubted that was going to happen. No, his final home with his pack would be far from here.

He was relaxed, though. His crowbar nearby. Having finally managed the strength and willpower to clean it. So he could keep using it for months to come. He would lock the door when the sun set. Risky? Yes. But he was also keeping an ear out for intruders. The silence was a bit deafening. Ringing, and unnerving. His neighbors gone. Dead. The residency a shell of its former glory. So he knew he'd hear something, or someone else. Here was just hoping it was one.

Just as he thought of what he could do to pass the time, he heard it. The soft crunch of the gravel dirty road beneath someone's feet. He held back a growl. Wanting to surprise his invader. He slowly got to his feet. Being careful as he picked his crowbar up. Unwilling to be heard. And slowly, he made his way to the front door. He held his crowbar in a tight fist. He was ready to defend his current territory. And defend himself, from potential bad wolves. He heard the subtle heaviness of the wooden porch beneath those feet. Drawing steadily closer.

After a pause and silence, he opened the door. Swinging his crowbar as hard as he could. The figure stepped back, avoiding injury. He growled warningly, even as an arrow head was pointed back at himself. He could have frowned. It was a survivor. And with a far more deadly weapon than he had. And, he was an alpha.

Fucking curse his luck.

After they had their stare off, he growled, "This is my home. You're not welcome here."

The other wolf took a moment. Taking him in. After a long enough time, the alpha slowly lowered his bow and arrow, "An omega, alone?"

He growled back, "What of it? I'll not be your fuck toy."

The alpha blinked. Only slightly surprised at his vigor, but not at his words. Slowly, he nodded, "I know. I just, worry. How long do you think you can go without company?"

The omega growled, "None of your damned business. This is my home. My territory. You can fuck off."

The alpha sighed, before he spoke soothingly. Hoping to calm him a little, "Please, I mean no harm. I know what you're thinking, and I respect that. But, I am very tired. Weary from my walking. I have been wandering a long time. I am low on food. And could use a safe place to rest. If you would open you heart up just enough, I would appreciate at least a place to rest. The sun is beginning to set." The omega looked, nodding. He wasn't wrong, "And while they aren't yet dangerous at night, why risk it? You can keep your supplies. I'll not touch them."

The omega huffed, taking him in. After thinking long and hard, he threatened him with the crowbar, "You try anything, I'm sinking this into your rotting brains."

The alpha nodded, before the omega let him in. Eyes narrowed, a growl of warning following him. As he stepped inside, he noted what the omega had done. Barricaded the stairs, and put heavy blankets up over the windows. Smart omega. A bed in the center of the largest room. And his stash of supplies nearby. As the door closed shut, he heard it lock. He knew the omega wouldn't trust him, but he was grateful for a place to rest.

He came to sit on the couch, and looked to the omega. He spoke with a small nod, "I'm Yunho, Jeong Yunho."

The omega watched him, eyes narrowed and untrusting. After what must have been a long debate with himself, he answered, "Park Seonghwa."

Yunho nodded, "Pleasure to meet you, Seonghwa. Even if it was hostile. But, I get it. As an omega, who can you trust? Certainly not an alpha. They'd hurt you and use you. Things are growing different now."

Seonghwa nodded slowly, before taking in him in a moment. After another long moment, his arms dropped from across his chest. He went to his food stash, and took up something. Without much warning, he tossed it to him. Yunho luckily caught it. Surprised the omega was giving him his food stash. Then again, he couldn't stop his omega nature of taking care of someone. At least, in whatever safe small ways he could. With a nod of appreciation, Yunho enjoyed what the omega was willing to give him.

And it sure did help.

//

Consider him crazy but, he actually felt drawn to Seonghwa.

Not, not sexually or romantically. But he felt, as if he were meant to stick with him. He'd found him for a reason. But he knew Seonghwa wouldn't let him stick around. Especially with ease. Or proving himself helpful and useful. Especially as Yunho now determined, he'd taken out all the zombies alone. He should have hoped by morning, he had proven himself. He hadn't even touched Seonghwa once. He kept his distance, and even took up slight guard duty. Maybe it was his alpha wolf telling him to guard, protect, and defend an omega as he slept. But he hoped it helped soften Seonghwa a little.

To be perfectly honest, Yunho could use company himself. Wolves weren't meant to live alone forever. They needed companionship. And besides, if they could learn to trust one another. If they could bridge the gap, they could become a pack. A pack of two, was better than a lone wolf in many circumstances. Especially the ones they were in. So Yunho had decided, he'd do something to try and earn some of Seonghwa's softer good graces.

After leaving and thanking Seonghwa for his help, Yunho had gone to see what supplies he could bring back. Prove his worth to the omega. Not just as an alpha, but a companion he could rely on. Eventually. He'd managed to find his way to a small convenience store. Likely one that the residency had had for convenience, of course. He took out a few zombies that were inside, but took all he could. From medial supplies, to food. And anything else they may need. He then made, for a small hunt. He didn't get much, Just a few squirrels.

Better than nothing.

With his haul, Yunho made back for Seonghwa's safe house. Yunho needed one himself, and company. So, this was the best he could come up with. Here was just hoping Seonghwa saw reason. His inner wolf was making a small chewing motion towards the omega. Yunho knew alphas submitted to omegas out of love and respect. Knowing they were more than just pretty delicate things needing protection all the time. No. His wolf was telling him Seonghwa was an elder. He didn't bother asking. If Seonghwa accepted him as his pack, he could ask after his age.

With some meat, supplies, and some wood he'd collected on his journey back, Yunho made for Seonghwa's current safe house. He expected the crowbar in his face again. He could tell Seonghwa was on alert. Based on the previous afternoon he'd arrived. So there was no way he was sneaking up on him again. Damn, and here he thought alphas were supposed to be grand masters of stealth. Oh, well. He stood, waiting. His ear moving, detecting slight movement. The door opened. Seonghwa holding his crowbar, jaw clenched.

Yunho offered a bright smile, and held the squirrels by their tails up for him to see, "I come bearing peace offerings."

Seonghwa rolled his eyes, before he let out an annoyed sigh. He stepped aside, letting Yunho and his treasures in. He carefully and quietly closed the door behind him, "Why did you come back?"

Yunho shrugged, even as he set his bow on the counter. Along with his quiver. Then his backpack, as he finally answered, "I stumbled upon you for a reason. What that is, only nature and the gods know. I can't keep being alone. Nor can you. We don't trust one another, fine. But we can try and build it. If you're willing. You need a pack, same as I do. You'll go mad without company. As would any lone wolf. If we can work together as a pack, we have a greater chance of survival."

Seonghwa took him in, even as Yunho began to organize his supplies with Seonghwa's. Seonghwa hummed, "You make a few fair points." He chewed his bottom lip a moment. Clearly debating long and hard with himself on his options. After a long enough debate, he sighed. Shoulders sagging. He nodded, "You make fair argument. I could use help eventually. Might as well take what I am given. And you are the first survivor I've come across since leaving my old apartment. I accept, but you have to earn my trust."

Yunho nodded, "As you do me. Though, you have earned my respect. Taking out all the zombies around here alone. Impressive. Not saying omegas never had it in them, it's just nice to see them finally unleashing their real strength."

Seonghwa smirked, appreciating the compliment, "Well, thank you."

Yunho smiled, setting up his own little area he could sleep in. And to call his own.

Finally, they had a pack.
