too far gone
Lapis paced back and forth from where she stood on the moon. Why? Why did she stop? She was so close to being as far as she could from this stratosphere… but she couldn't bear leaving. She had to know what was happening. If the diamonds got close, she would see it first, and she could escape. she sighed and glanced at the moon base in the distance. She had heard Steven talk about it, but never really… looked into it.
Before she noticed, she was walking towards the tower. She walked through the doors, spinning around and looking at the area, the paintings of the diamonds seeming to glare down at her. She turned her face to the ground and made her way towards the stairs, scaling them slowly. She stopped at a divot between the top and bottom floor, a middle area with a blue ball in the middle of it. She tilted her head and walked to the mysterious sphere, one finger glazing it momentarily.
Lapis jumped with a gasp as suddenly, the area around her wasn't the moon base. It was Beach city's boardwalk. The blue gem scrambled backwards, her eyes wide as she glanced around. For a moment, she thought she had teleported until she realized everyone around her was… entirely ignoring her. She waved a hand in from today the weird yellow haired human that Steven called “Fryman”. No response. She poked his side. Her hand went straight through him. She jumped with a yelp, her back grazing the sphere. And suddenly, she was back to the farm… or what was left of it. She glanced around the now barren area without the barn. Without… Peridot.
Peridot. Lapis turned to the globe and pressed all around it, flashing from place to place until she was back on the boardwalk. She ran quickly to Stevens home, walking straight through the door, looking around frantically. She wobbled into each room, looking for Peridot. Finally, she saw her, laying in what Steven called a “bathtub.” She wanted to go straight up to Peridot and hug her. She just wanted to be there with her. She sniffled and walked towards the tub, sitting in it alongside Peridot. Lapis arranged herself into a lying position so she was beside her.
“Peridot…” She whispered, reaching a hand out. A hand that phased directly through Peridot's cheek. Lapis jolted her hand back and blinked with a sniffle. She breathed deeply and sighed, rubbing her eyes. She opened then, Peridot's eyes were teared up, looking directly into Lapis’.
“Lapis…” She whispered as Lapis stared back.
“I miss you.”
Lapis’ eyes widened as she stared at Peridot, a hand moving up to cover her lips in a soft gasp. Peridot sniffled and grabbed at her face, turning away from Lapis, but before Lapis could do anything, the world flickered, and the area was gone. She was laying on the flat cold floor of the moon base. She shivered and stood, breathing deeply for a moment and smudging a palm across her eyes. It didn't matter. Nothing Peridot could say would change it. She had left. That was what had to happen. But, oh stars, she hated it.
She pushed her hair absentmindedly out of her face and trudged back to the barn, curling up in the hammock. All by herself. No Peridot annoying her while she tries to sleep. No Peridot rewatching her favorite episodes of Camp Pining Hearts far too loud. No Peridot rambling about something silly she had done in the day while laying next to Lapis, swaying the hammock far too much. No Peridot wrapped around Lapis, mumbling about things as she swore she wasn't tired. No Peridot drifting off in her arms.
No. Peridot.
Lapis curled up into a ball, hands wrapped around her own waist as she sniffled and tried her best to drift to sleep.
She was unsuccessful.
