Prologue
Petunia hated them on sight. Two little girls that looked just like two little girls from so long ago. Of course, they couldn't recreate history perfectly, so both girls were given magic and Petunia couldn’t get over the unfairness of it all. How come Lily got everything, dead or not? Lily always gets everything!
So in an act of defiance she let a few things slip past her. So in her act of defiance, Vernon got a bit out of hand. So, in her defiance she missed a few things she probably wouldn’t have if the two nuisances were her own daughters. So what? She wasn't the one who abandoned everything to be a freak, Lily was. She wasn’t the one who killed their parent, Lily was. Petunia wasn’t the one who got herself killed, Lily was.
Petunia Dursley was perfectly normal, thank you very much. A perfectly normal person overlooks things every so often.
So she was a bit more normal than others, that’s not her fault. So she didn’t see the looks Vernon shared with some of his friends, that’s not her fault either. So she didn’t know where his extra pocket money came from, that is most decidedly not her fault.
(Right?)
But then it was. Because Vernon didn’t come home. Because Rosemary and Hyacinth came home in a rush of torn clothes and bloody legs. Because Petunia could finally look at these two girls and see what might’ve happened to them. Because she’s not normal and she couldn’t see that her son was more of a help to these girls than she ever was. Because she had failed and it was all. her. fault.
