prey animals and dirty fingernails

prey animals and dirty fingernails

there is dirt underneath my fingernails

it won't - it won't wash out.

you are there too

pieces of your skin and our memories

and your flaking loyalty.

disappointment -

rusting over your skin

smelling coppery and bloodlike,

your eyes like a feral animals;

you are an imposter,

cowardice sending shivers

creeping down your spine.

the burn of whisky and

the stench of rotting leaves and

the sting of smoke from our burnt bridges

mingling with your greying fur.

beady eyes glinting with malice, with regret,

with a thousand unsaid grievances

so we grieve those you killed.
