The Untold Story of Narcissa Black

Narcissa Black was 16 when she faced the first big decision of her life.

The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black faced turbulent times, the Black cousins were torn apart and fragmented – Bellatrix was losing herself in the madness of blood purity, a madness often seen in the family but never quite so early. Andromeda was pretending to be the perfect Black daughter and Slyterin, all while being madly in love with a Hufflepuff muggleborn. Narcissa was doing all she could by herself, staying aloof from others, to protect herself and their family reputation. Sirius had turned his back on his entire family just to spite his parents, uncaring that he was also punishing his younger brother. And Regulus, was doing all he could to stay above the turbulent waters of expectations that surrounded him.

Bellatrix, supremely confident in her interpretation of the family motto, ‘Tojours Pur’, was all but lost to the normal world as her madness drove her further into the violence surrounding the blood purity movement. Andromeda and Narcissa, always closer to each other, had never spoken about it, but Narcissa knew about Andromeda’s affection for the muggleborn Ted Tonks and did not want to lose her sister.

And so, when she had heard murmurs within the family of a possible betrothal between Andromeda Black and Lucius Malfoy, she knew that immediate action was needed.

That’s when, at the age of 16, Narcissa Black, often considered to be the weakest member of the Black family, decided to take the family's future into her own hands. She started small, a few flirtatious smiles at Lucius Malfoy, and her plan was in motion.

At 18, she had managed to maintain her relationship with Andromeda, who had forsaken the rest of her family but stayed in touch with her dearest younger sister.

At 22, she was married to Lucius Malfoy. She had learned to love him, she truly had – however, this did not mean that she supported his ideologies and actions. She had learned to pick her battles and had firmly dismissed any ideas that mentioned her involvement in the pureblood movement.

At age 25, the next big change in her life took place, as her family grew to include a son, and her priorities changed completely. Draco Lucius Malfoy was the most adorable baby that anyone had seen and the light of her life. Everyone claimed that he was the most charming baby they had met, but often serious as if he understood every situation that surrounded him.

At age 26, Narcissa issued her ultimatum – their family or the Death Eaters, and Lucius, adoring husband that he was, stepped away from the movement, while holding on to his beliefs. No one walked away from the Dark Lord, so Lucius claimed the need for time to take over the duties of the head of the Malfoy family, as well as the duties of a father.

And finally, it was at age 29, when Narcissa finally had proof that her son wasn’t just intelligent and charismatic, but also gifted by Magic itself.
