Chapter 3
I didn’t really have much to bring to school this year, left it all at school last year and mum would probably send me clothes while I was at school anyway. We were at the station early, I asked Hermione, and she said Marie was there early every year.
“Look what I’ve got,” George said, it was a bloody fanged frisbee, we haven’t been allowed to have one of these in years. He gives me a smile, the station wasn’t too packed so if we found a clear spot we could throw it before we got on the train.
I walk about twenty feet from him and we begin to toss it, surprisingly nobody gets in our way. That is until a familiar blonde-haired girl walks right in our path.
“Watch out!” George yelled, she moved out of the way in time, thank Merlin, she would’ve been so mad if it actually hit her. George started to walk to her, she hadn’t noticed me yet. We hadn’t had any contact since the Quidditch World Cup, which wasn’t out of the ordinary but it was different this time since I spent the whole time thinking about her.
I started walking towards them, she was scolding George. “Lighten up Makehay,” I said behind her as I walked beside George, she gave me only a quick look but it made my heart skip a beat. Had she gotten more pretty since the last time I saw her or something?
“Miss us?” Me and George said, she made a disgusted face which made me smile.
“I miss summer, when I don’t have to be around you two.” She couldn’t possibly mean that. She turned around to get her trunk but I quickly got it before she could, she started to look around for it. George shook his head while smiling and walked away, he knew I was smitten with her, I had told him as soon as I started to like her.
I quickly walked over to the train door with her trunk and waited before she noticed me there. “Are you coming or not?” I said, she walked over to me, a mix of confusion and anger on her face.
“You didn’t have to do that, I could’ve carried it myself,” I smiled, she was so stubborn all the time.
“And what kind of gentleman would I be if I let you do that?” I said, smiling again. I saw her cheeks get a bit red and had to hold back a laugh, it wasn’t hard to get her flustered.
I held out my hand for her to get on the train, the feeling of her soft hands against mine send shivers through my body, I wanted to keep holding on to it but I knew I couldn’t.
We walked only halfway down the hallway when she stopped, I raise my eyebrows, confused.
“I can take my trunk now, so you can go find George,” She held out her hand, I didn’t want to sit with George though, I wanted to sit with her.
“I was going to sit with you, if that’s alright?” I said, hopefully she didn’t mind, or have a full cabin, I didn’t even think about that.
“That’s alright but it’s most likely just going to be me and Luna.” I shrugged, Draco Malfoy could be sitting with us and I wouldn’t care as long as I got to sit with Marie. She turned around and started looking for her, I followed closely behind.
Luna was in the second car we searched, reading some weird newspaper it looked like. Marie sat down as I put her trunk down, I sat next to her.
“Hi Luna, this is Fred, have you met him?” Marie said, I’ve heard Hermione talk about Luna before, and I knew her and Marie were really good friends.
She looked up at me and stared at me for a second, “No I haven’t, I’m Luna, Luna Lovegood.” she said, I was going to introduce myself but she looked back down at her newspaper, I looked over at Marie and raised an eyebrow.
“She doesn’t want to talk right now, there must be a new section on the Quibbler,” She whispered to me, I nodded, she was probably just a really awkward person, and it gave me more freedom to talk to Marie.
Me and Marie had at least a foot between us, I wanted to scoot closer to her but didn’t know how she’d feel about it. I just sat and waited for her to say or do something.
I was doing my best to get closer to her without her noticing, I would crack my back and scoot closer as I did so she didn’t notice or stand up and stretch and sit back down closer, I had almost closed the gap between us.
“You don’t have to stay here, you can go find somewhere else to sit. You seem a bit bored.” she said, did she want me to leave?
“I don’t think I’ve ever been quiet for this long,” I said, not replying to what she said because I didn’t want to tell her it didn’t matter if I was bored because at least I was sitting next to her.
“You can talk, you know that right?” I knew that, but I thought she wanted to sit in silence or something so I didn’t say anything just in case.
“Well, you weren’t saying anything, so I didn’t say anything.” I said, she was quiet for a second then turned a bit towards me.
“Well, what do you want to talk about?” she asked, I didn’t really know, we could talk about anything at all and I’d be thrilled.
“We could talk about Quidditch, or why you hate Viktor Krum, or my boyishly good looks, or we could talk about you.” I said, I wanted to talk about her, we’d never talked much before and I wanted to know more about her. She didn’t say anything
“Personally, I do love a good conversation about my looks, but the other options are alright too,” I said, interrupting the silence, she smiled a bit.
“What do you want to know about me?” she asked, if I said everything she would probably get weirded out.
“Hmmm, favorite color?” I asked, her eyes darted to my hair, weird.
“Orange, you?” Is that why she looked at my hair? She likes my hair? I used to get teased for it when I was younger and sometimes I still hear remarks about it so hearing it was someone’s favorite color was surprising.
I looked at her, she was waiting for me to answer, what was my favorite color? I look at her eyes, they’re an icy blue, practically grey. I’d always thought her eyes were pretty, even if I was only seeing them because she was glaring at me.
“Blue, almost grey blue.” I said, staring at her. We sat like that for a few seconds, staring at each other. I wanted to just pull her into me and kiss her right there but she’d probably not feel the same and think I was weird.
“Complimentary colors, the best complimentary pair in my opinion.” she said, I smiled at her, she didn’t realize I had meant her eyes.
“We complement each other then, do we? Orange and blue?” I said, hoping she would understand that I meant her eyes, but she just made a confused face.
“My hair, your eyes? Orange and blue?” Bloody hell, I thought she was smart.
“What else do you want to know?” She said, I wanted to know everything, but I guess I could settle for the basics.
“What do you do for fun?” I asked, I never see her around Hogwarts unless she’s walking to class, or a quidditch game, or if we have a class together.
“Sometimes me and Hermione go to the Three Broomsticks and have a butterbeer together, that’s really all I do besides quidditch practice and reading.” She said, sounds about right.
“You hang out with Hermione of all people? You really need more friends.” I knew her and Hermione were friends but I didn’t think they actually hung out that much, I thought they were just study buddies. Still, it’s weird she only said something about Hermione, I thought she had way more friends.
Actually, now that I think about it I’ve never seen her have a prolonged conversation with someone that wasn’t Cedric, Hermione or Luna, she’s always just gave quick replies to people, never actually been their friend. It’s not like they weren’t talking to her though, people would drop what they were doing in the hallways just to say hi to her, she probably talks to them in class or something.
“It’s okay, you’ve got me now and I’ll be your best friend in the world,” I said while smiling, I was serious too, I would be her best friend if she let me.
“But tell me, as your best friend are there any guys at who have caught your eye? I’m a well-known guy, I can help you if you do yknow.” It was obviously a joke, just saying stuff to fill the silence, but I didn’t want her to answer.
“I think I can handle boys on my own Fred.” It may not have been my name, but at least it wasn’t someone else.
“Fine, but what if I need help with a lady? I’m dreadful with the girls, they never seem to want to actually stay with me.” I said, joking, but it was true, I could always get a girl but she always got annoyed with my jokes and pranks.
“I can’t help you with that, there’s not a reason for them to want to leave you,” she said, she couldn’t find a reason for someone to want to leave me? Is she being sarcastic or flirting? I can’t tell.
“Well then I ought to find a girl like you, maybe she would stay with me for a while.” I really hope she was flirting, I’d sound dumb if she wasn’t. She didn’t say anything.
“Except I’ve never met a girl like you, what if I never do? The only woman in the world that wouldn’t break up with me after the first week, and there’s only one. What am I to do then? You would just have to marry my so I wouldn’t be lonely.”
I winked and smiled at her, she didn’t say anything and just rolled her eyes at me, I laughed, I love joking around with her. She starts to sit back, if I want to get closer to her, I should probably do something and not let the rest of the ride be quiet.
I fake stretch, quickly putting my arm on the back of the seat when she sat back. I put my other arm behind my head and closed my eyes, I was trying to act like it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary but I couldn’t stop myself from smiling.
She doesn’t say anything, but she watches out the window for the rest of the ride.
