Chapter 3
“Are you alright, Harrison?” Draco asked as he saw him return.
“The Sabbats” Harry replied looking intensely at the members in the common room.
“What about them Heir Slytherin?” asked what looked like a third or fourth year.
“Do any of you practice?” he asked with the same look, causing shifting eyes and shuffling feet as some side eyed Hermione.
“She will be learning Witch Practice, do any of you Practice?” Harry said in reference to his uncategorized.
“Yes, Heir Slytherin, most of our family's practice. In secret of course can’t do otherwise without the ministry coming down on us.” A seventh year finally asked noticing an air of irritation coming from the foundling Heir.
“Why would you have to worry about the ministry, and what is which practice?” Hermione asked seeing people tensing at the confirmation.
“Witch Practice, Hermione, the religious and magical practice of magic followed by witches. As I said we will be educating you, and as for the ministry they have apparently decided that our holidays and practices are Dark and dangerous, therefor illegal.” Harry said calmly though anyone looking into his eyes saw what they could only describe as murder and knowledge.
“But that’s not right if its religion they shouldn’t be allowed to restrict it.” Hermione yelled aghast at what the government had done, not noticing people's tension lessening at her words and the nods of approval from the upper years. “Wait, does that mean I can’t get tested for my blood status then? If we can't perform the sabbat.” she slumped, remembering that Harry had said it would have to be during either Mabon or Samhain which she now knew were illegal.
“Incorrect, this is my land, this is Witch Land, and we will follow Witch Practice. We will hold the Mabon feast we will convene with our dead during Samhain, Limbo will come, and we will test your blood.” Harry assured, “I am a Witch I will not observe the tradition of the Witch killers and if the Ministry takes me let them Limbo holds my foundling seats my oldest seats. We will not be persecuted for our practice and the laws will be overturned. To ban the Sabbats is to attack Hekate and I will not allow my family to be harmed by ignorant mortals again. Come the 21 st we will feast in the old Sabbat circle, and no one can stop us not the ministry not Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledor. We. Are. Witch's! We will not bow to the non-magical Witch Killers as we did not when they started the burnings, and we did not when they killed their own young in their cribs when they showed Hekate’s gift.” He continued getting more worked up as he went, ending in a mix of cheers and excited hissing from the house, “Spread the word let all True Witch’s know we will be meeting at the edge of the Black Forest on the 21 st and I will guide us to our sacred space. To those who chose the Witch Killer Practice over their own let their gift ROT as they besmirch the blessing of its existence! Those who would spit in the eye of Hekate do not deserve her gift.” He finished, his otherworldly eyes glowing with power and malice.
“The Black Forest is forbidden though.” Called a younger member of the house.
“By who’s say?” Harry said in a soft tone that felt like the brush of a knife wrapped in silk, those glowing eyes boring into the speakers' own.
“The headmaster said...”
“What,” Harry began walking towards the child, “Did I just say about Albus Dumbledor?” he finished with an Eldritch grin emphasizing the glow of the eyes above it.
“But”
“No,” A seventh year with a Prefect Badge said pulling the child back, “Hair Slytherin says Albus Dumbledor will not stop us so he will not stop us. He cannot do anything; the Heir has spoken; you heard his introduction he is not just Heir of our house he is Heir to All houses he is Heir to Hogwarts. When he says no one can stop us he means no one can stop us the only reason the ministry exists is due to his oldest houses. If not for the founding four, Emrys, and the Imperial House Lefay, the ministry would not be.” he looked around the room making eye contact with the rest of the house, “We do as decreed we spread the word first to those we know then to those they feel we can trust.” He turned to the still incensed Foundling, “Would Limbo be willing if they can come to test other uncategorized?”
“They would, Prefect...” Harry trailed off expectantly.
“Higgs, Heir Slytherin, Terrance Higgs.”
“Well meet, Prefect Higgs, perhaps you could assist us in our efforts to get Ms. Granger up to an acceptable level to interact with Limbo on Mabon. We are of course unsure on any line expectations you seem well versed in the importance of such things at least and as a senior Prefect no less you may have more incites than we mere first years and she has much to learn.” Harry said calming as he was shown a new asset for general education for Hermione, “Especially as we are unsure if Limbo will be able to make it on Mabon since we are unsure how strong the threads and paths may be.”
“Of course, Heir Slytherin, I would be more than happy to assist though I do caution you I may not be available often as I am in my N.E.W.T year this year.” Higgs agreed bowing in acknowledgement.
“Of course, we would not wish to affect your studies, it will probably only be if we need further clarification than we can give that we will come to you.” Harry said with a nod as he turned from the conversation, “Hermione, I hope I did not scare you with my anger, I was simply upset when I was given this news by my brother and further from what I learned from the others.” He said coming to the couches the first years were sitting at.
“No well perhaps a bit, but I can understand why you would be so upset to an extent from what the girls explained to me on the train. Because Hekate is like the main patron but is like Limbo where you can’t really dedicate to her, I think. Right?”
“Kind of your right that Hekate is one of those that fall under the same banner as Limbo where you can't follow them. However, we are dedicated to both and neither just because we exist. This is because there is no assurance you will ever encounter either most who encounter Limbo are on the verge of death and need to decide which to guide you do you chose Death Aspect and move on to the next plane or do you choose Life Aspect and return to the mortal plane. This is one of the things that can lead to a Limbo foundling as before a certain age you are seen as unready to make such a choice for yourself. This would make it impossible for a true choice to be made and they would take you as their own. The other way is for you to be abandoned and meet them due to the circumstances of that abandonment. Hekate on the other hand you only need to look at the world Non-magicals will never encounter her as they do not have the gift while Witches encounter her every day as her gift runs through our veins.” Here Harry paused, knowing Hermione’s penchant for questions.
“So, the Sabbats are like a dedication by without the actual expectations of a dedicated patron?”
“Yes and no, the sabbats are ways to thank the Patrons and give back to Hekate in the process. Since it is the closest we will use Mabon as an example, we will go to the Sabbat circle in the Black Forest and have a feast. At the feast will be a Brazier which we will give a portion of our meal as an offering, during the offering you will focus on what you are thankful for or something you wish to leave from your mind, such as a regret that has been dragging you down or a memory that haunts you, the traditional foods are Pomegranates and Apples, then we feast late into the night and enjoy the nature around us. It is a harvest festival and a time to find balance.”
“So, is that why we’re going into the forest? Because it's a harvest festival?” Hermione asked, still slightly confused about that part.
“No, not because it's a harvest festival but because the sacred sabbat circle is located there. You see every coven has a sacred circle that cleansed and marked out to perform the sabbats in usually found in a magically powerful area on their property or near their covens' territory. Mind you covens don’t really mark out territory anymore though non-magicals still preserve the Imperial Circle, not that they know that anymore though.”
“Wait, they do?” Daphne suddenly said.
“Yes, Stone Hinge was the Imperial Sabbat Circle before the fall of Camelot. It was lost to the non-magicals along with the capital. Its late we have class in the morning, off to bed all.” Harry said getting up as he finished leading to the common room emptying as the house headed to their dorms.
“Harrison,” Draco asked as they entered the dorms, “Are we really going to celebrate the Sabbats in the forest?”
“Yes, we will, sleep, Draco, we will be getting up at 0600 and going on a run it will help with physical and magical stamina. By we,” Harry continued turning to the rest of their year mates, “I mean the whole nest. We will be top of the school, and we will be able to defend ourselves. These runs will be the first step.” He finished closing his curtains to stop any arguments.
“He was joking right he can’t tell us what to do.” Theodore Nott said with a sneer.
“He can,” Blaise Zabini replied, “If he can decree the whole house break the rules, break the laws, and not be argued with. He can implement a rule like this.”
“And if we go to Professor Snape?” Nott said with a smug smirk.
“The whole nest includes Professor Snape,” Draco said crawling into bed, “I doubt he will argue with his brother on this. But feel free to inform him.”
“He’s joking right, I’m going to Snape.” Nott scoffed, as the rest chose to follow the advice of their Heir.
~Severus’ Office~
“Mister Nott.” Severus said opening the door of his office after hearing a knock.
“I came to inform you, Harrison Slytherin is making demands and should be stopped.” Nott said with a smirk thinking he had gotten the other in trouble.
“And what has My Brother decided?” Severus asked wondering what was going to change with his house.
“He has informed us the entire house will be waking at 0600 and going on a run to enhance our magical and physical stamina apparently.” Nott said huffily.
“Did he say house or nest, Mr. Nott?” Severus asked, not that he didn’t do so already after all it was one of the things Limbo stressed to keep one’s magic strong.
“Nest, Professor, apparently Malfoy feels this extends to you as well. I thought you should know.”
“Yes, I would have been doing so anyway but it is good to know I will have company this year. Now go to sleep or you won't have enough sleep.” Severus almost couldn’t hold back his own eldritch grin at the shock on the boy's face.
“You can't be serious; he cannot make us do this.” Nott argued in shock.
“He can, and I agree with him. Now as I said go to sleep, I will see you at 0600.” Severus answered, eyes beginning to glow slightly, “If I must tell you again it will be detention.”
“Very Well.” Nott huffed and went to bed.
~0600, 2 September, Slytherin Dorms~
Everyone was woken by a loud alarm going through the dorms informing them they had ten minutes to assemble in appropriate active ware in the common room below.
“What is going on?” A seventh year asked Higgs as he rolled from his bed.
“I don't know but I’m not risking points loss by ignoring it and if it is a prank Professor Snape will deal with it.”
Ten minutes later the common room was filled with bleary eyed 11–18-year-olds, awaiting further instruction.
“Good, you're all ready, someone knock on the office door to let Severus know we are ready.” Harry said from the front as someone did so, “Good morning, Brother, are you prepared as I was informed Heir Nott went complaining to you last night.”
“Yes, Slytherin’s as of today we will be running every morning. This will strengthen both your physical and magical stamina. It will also help with getting out any excess energy so you may focus better on classes. Now, everyone out to the pitch as we are unaware of everyone's current fitness levels the goal is to get at least one lap around the Black Lake by the end of the year if not sooner.” Severus explained before leading them outside.
“Alright everyone,” Harry called as they came upon the pitch, “for now and until we are all at the same level just run until you cannot anymore. Many of you have not had to do this amount of physical activity before so do not feel bad if you cannot do as many as your friend or can't get a full lap in at all. Now, Severus and I will walk you through some stretches before to warm up and hopefully avoid injury, then we will walk you through some at the end to help stretch out the muscles for the same reason. At which point we will head back to the Common to shower and get ready for the day.” He finished as they started getting the students to form up in lines and stretch. At the end of an hour everyone was stretched out and happily physically exhausted but mentally more awake tromping back to the dungeons.
“That wasn’t so bad was it, Heir Nott?” Harry asked with a mocking tone as they entered their dorm.
“Just because you got your way this time does not mean it will work next time.” Nott spat with what was supposed to be a threatening look.
“I will actually, as the changes I’m implementing are things Severus and I grew up with and are better for. If you want to fall into mediocrity that is your choice, but it is not a choice that will last as it will bring hell upon you from Lord Theodore Nott Sr. Being book smart will not keep you alive nor will it produce an Heir and to die also would not lead to one. Get over yourself and do what will better you.” Harry said coldly looking down his nose from those otherworldly eyes as if he could see into the depths of Theodores' soul and saw nothing worth seeing, before turning and leaving already showered and dressed.
The entire snake nest entered the hall at 0730 and sat for breakfast once more waiting for Harry to start eating before eating themselves. As they ate Harry kept an eye on the hall noticing how the other houses entered in groups by year or friend groups some led by Prefects others simply following older years until they find their tables. Then the dead house trickled in in ones and twos, some slightly larger groups and all in various forms of disarray or dishevelment.
“Higgs?” Harry asked as the Prefects had all sat close to their Heir.
“Heir Slytherin?” Higgs responded not expecting the young Heir to speak during a meal after last night.
“What do you make of the other houses, without the rivalistic diatribes please.” Harry said with a calm look at his own house table.
“Ah,” Higgs said, understanding coming to him, “The Hufflepuffs are a loyal lot, obviously, but they also are not to be trifled with needlessly they stick close to the traditional in manner and etiquette, as do the Ravens often though they also lean more to the intellectual and sometimes can skirt those traditions when their curiosity gets the best of them. Gryffindor, well, the Gryffs are of those that will probably fall under those you have declared can have their gift rot. They snub tradition, spit on etiquette and terrorize those who do not do as they do. Of course, as with any group such as this there are the outliers, but they are few and far between, like a blessed moon.”
“Let me guess who started that?” Harry said sarcastically.
“Dumbledor, yes.” Severus voice suddenly came from his side, “Your schedule.” He continued handing Harry his schedule.
“Thank you, Brother, Prefect Higgs.” Harry said with a nod, going back to his breakfast as he looked over his schedule.
