Why not give everything to the music, when it was the only thing that ever felt like it belonged to us?
It felt that her entire life was defined, nothing of her own. Rose Minerva Granger-Weasley had her whole life told to her by her parents. She was the oldest child of two members of the Golden Trio. Not that it was their fault, either. They needed a perfect child for the magazines and it was either her or Hugo. She, being the oldest felt like the obvious choice. The only time she felt like herself was when she had her drum sticks in her hands and a kick-drum hit.
Then it was her own. None could match. She was the only thing heard.
It was loud, a beat, a pulse which no one but herself understood. She didn't even know why the drums spoke to her; she seemed like the last person it would be for, yet it did. She and her cousin wereΒ theΒ band kids.
Albus with his verses and chords underneath his fingers and Rose with her Hi-Hats and Snare Drum beats. All they were missing was a keyboardist. The ones at school never felt right. When it was just the two of them, Albus would sing his heart out while Rose would beat it out.
Her cousin was a force to be reckoned with, he perfected how to play and even write music on his own. While most of his verses were chaotic, it was in rhythm with his chords, kind of writing style.
She just wanted to stay there forever, listening to Al's songs and giving her own inputs with her drums. There were short performances, which she and Albus would do when they were bored at school. They'd been nicknamed 'The Band Twins' 'cus of this.
Rose never really told her parents about the whole band, I mean they knew that she played the drums; they didn't really care for it unless it dealt with her studies. There was a time when she slipped a grade and they threatened her with removing her from the band. But she deserved it or she might have slipped in her school.
It was this time when she actually figured out how devastating something so small as being taken out of the band felt. She worked twice as hard just to keep up with everything, there were days when she just forgot to eat and felt numb.
The only thing which brought her back was that godforsaken drum kit. For her 9th birthday, her mum had bought it for her, she'd never felt happier. Her mum also taught her how to cast aΒ MuffiatioΒ so that no one could hear her drums at night, only because she knew that Rose wouldn't be stupid and do anything to disgrace them.
So yeah. She had issues. She can handle it.
The day was particularly gloomy. Her best friend/cousin decided to take her to the Band room as it was after school and it was raining heavily, this was going to be her last day at school after all both of them were 11 now. They were going to be shipped off to Hogwarts. As she was the oldest between the two she had more pressure out of them both, so now she had memorised the entire first year syllabus whilst being top of her school.
And Albus being a chaotic angel he is, decided to drag her into their favourite room. With his guitar on his back and drumsticks in her hands, they ran through the hallways one last time. The other students wanted one last show before they disappeared to a 'new school' so they also followed chanting "The Band Twins show's happening, The Twins' show's happening!"
As soon as half the grade got settled down inside the room and outside, Albus spoke, "Hey guys, how about one last show before we leave?"
Cheers were going off in the crowd, "I don't know Al, it seems like they don't want one..." she replied cheekily.
The cheering became louder, and soon they began chanting, "Sing Sing Sing!"
"Alright, Alright chill, Rosa would you do the honours?" with that she sat on the Drum Throne and began with a snare beat as Al did a short riff before singing his new song which they'd practised for fun called 'Young Blood' it was about a book which both of them had read.
The guy in the book was left heartbroken as his girlfriend got amnesia and forgot about his existence, and he couldn't connect back with her 'cus her family members forbid him from even speaking to her. And when they did get in contact her family madeΒ himΒ the big bad villain and she also pushed him away.
A real heartbreak anthem for those who felt it. But it also resonated within herself. The first verse itself was an ode to her life, something she couldn't forget. When she remembered what her mother said on her ninth birthday. Herminone said that she'd 'love Rose including all her faults' but the moment she unsurely said how school was a bit difficult to get through and maybe if they'd allow her to drop a few classes. Hermione blew up. Went on about how 'ungrateful she was' and 'she needed to grow up'. Rose simply kept an impassive face and agreed to whatever her mother said, and went up to her room.
She cried so much her throat went raw and her tears evaporated.
Fun times am I right?
Remember the words you told me? "Love me 'til the day I die"
Surrender my everything 'cause you made me believe you're mine
Yeah, you used to call me baby, now you're calling me by name
Takes one to know one, yeah, you beat me at my own damn game
You push and you push and I'm pulling away, pulling away from you
I give and I give and I give and you take, give and you take
It was a really fun performance, Albus' lyrics really touching the hearts of a few of the older, lovestruck 15 year olds, and her beats just bringing the whole piece to life. A drummer's power always lies in her ability to bring the crowd back to life. She enjoyed every moment of it. Savoured it as if it was heaven on a plate.
She felt alive, like every word which Albus sang was hung on every beat of her snare or a crash cymbal. She felt like herself. Not a person she built up. And so did Albus, both of them were immersed in it. It was a child-like giddiness, something which she usually wasn't allowed to experience except for when she was here.
It ended of course, but by god it felt amazing for those two minutes.
