A simple letter (that isn't so simple)
Harry was finally recovered from his ordeal on the third floor. The last day of school was upon them so he took the time to sit in his dorm room at his desk to think. Hedwig screeched and chattered as he fed her a treat, going over what he planned to write. He knew he had to contact the Flamels, he had to know the truth. Asking Dumbledore directly wouldn't work, the man was hiding something and Harry didn't know why. He unpacked his quill and brought out a piece of parchment, once he had a good idea of what to say he started to write. The qill scratched quietly as he began the letter.
"Dear Nicholas and Prenelle Flamel,
I am writing to you about a concerning piece of news you may not have heard. I am Harry Potter and I assume you know that your stone was hidden at hogwarts in the mirror of erised. Dumbledore assured me it was destroyed when I woke up in the hospital ward after a thief attempted to steal it. When I asked him about you both and whether you would be okay with the stone's destruction, he assured me that you were. I don't know how to explain this but he was lying I just knew it. I needed to send you a letter to find out the truth, I don't know why he's lying but I can't ask him. I figured I would ask you since you're the best source other than him. Please let me know if you're okay.
Harry Potter"
He sighed as he finished writing, hoping that his letter would be able to reach the Flamels in time. From what he knew of Hermione's research, the elixir of life could be taken indefinitely however, if a person ever stopped taking the elixir they only had a limited amount of time before they would die from lack of use. Harry had to make sure they got his letter and could answer it in time. He rolled up the parchment and tied it to hedwig's leg. "Take this letter to the Flamels please" he pet hedwig as he spoke and she gave a happy trill before flying through the tower window he had opened. He could only hope for a response.
Suddenly the door opened. "Come on mate you're gonna miss the house cup awards!" Ron rushed into the room grabbing Harry and rushing out the door. "Ron I've got it, we still have plenty of time to get down there!" Harry let out a slight laugh at his friend's frantic rush down the stairs into the common room. Hermione was waiting at the bottom looking frazzled. "It took you long enough Harry, I thought we were going to have to leave you" she huffed. "Oh come on Hermione we're not going to be bloody late, we still have a whole half hour to be down in the great hall" Ron scoffed as he led the trio out of the common rooms. "Fine but don't complain if we don't get good seats" Hermione sniffed, fed up with the boys and their lateness. The trio made their way to the great hall, Harry in the middle with Ron and Hermione on both sides. They sat down at the gryffindor table, the sounds of all the houses talking at once drowned out anything else they could say.
The professors sat at the front of the great hall in a long table, with a golden seat in the middle where the headmaster currently sat. Dumbledore approached the lecturn and the hall gradually calmed down until only the occasional mutter or murmur could be heard. "We have had an adventurous year, with many doing great things. Before we reveal which house won the cup, some additional points will be added." Harry looked around confused. Was this something that usually happened? The gryffindors looked confused and as he looked around the other houses looked just the same. "To Harry potter, for prevailing in the face of darkness I award 50 points to gryffindor." Now Harry was very confused. Why was he being rewarded for almost dying and killing Quirrel? He could still hear the screams and smell the scent of burning flesh in his nightmares. He didn't think that was worthy of an award. Dumbledore continued, "to Ron weasley for his master strategy at wizard's chess I award 50 points to gryffindor. To Hermione granger, for her intelligence and ability to find a solution in the darkest of times I award 50 points to gryffindor. And to Neville longbottom, whose bravery and loyalty allowed him to stand up to even his friends in the face of what was right I award 25 points to gryffindor." Dumbledore paused as the cheering of gryffindors swelled and eventually died down.
"With that it is time to reveal the house cup. This year it goes to... gryffindor!" Everyone at the table jumped up and cheered, laughing and high fiving as the banners unfurled to the red and gold standard. Harry stayed seated, lost in thought. He snuck a quick look around to the other house to see disappointment but at the slytherin table all he could see was resignation. The slytherins had been the closest to winning the house cup and Harry couldn't help but be suspicious that the points him and his gryffindor friends were awarded made it so they just barely beat the slytherins. "Mate aren't you going to celebrate? We won the bloody house cup!" Ron all but screamed into his ear to be heard over the noise. "I'm happy for us but I'm still recovering from everything" Harry replied, staying seated. He was still thoughtful after the ceremony wrapped up, Professor McGonagall was given the house cup and with that the students started to disperse back to their dorms. Harry was packed up and ready to go back to the dursleys for the summer, even though he was dreading it. All that was left to do was to sleep for the night and then head to platform 9 3/4 the next day.
