Sakusa Kiyoomi HATES colds. There are a few things worse than having a cold. Mainly because usually it’s not bad enough to take a day off and rest but is bad enough to make you miserable throughout the day. Also having a scabby nose because of the excessive wiping, having to eat a (seemingly) vomit and fart flavored lozenges, painful headaches and sore throat is just a small part.
So imagine her dismay when she wakes up with a clogged nose, sore throat and crampy body. Great. Like being on her period wasn’t enough, she had a cold. She couldn’t help but think this was the way the universe was punishing her. She had too many happy days back to back.
After giving herself 5 or so minutes to marinate and pity herself, she remembered she had a practice. For a moment she considered calling in sick but she decided that her cold was still at an early stage and would be careful not to make anyone else sick. Not because she couldn’t see Atsumu because she went to support her sister for the new Tokyo branch of Onigiri Miya and missed her. Nope. She quickly sent Atsumu a good morning and confirmed that she was also going to the practice.
When she got off the bed to brush her teeth while her coffee was brewing, she highly considered not going. She looked like she had a fight with a racoon gang. She had random red spots on her face, overall puffy face but especially puffy eyes. She resembled a puffer fish.
She didn’t rush to brush her teeth. She would have to wait 20 minutes to eat or drink something anyways. While she was waiting, she prepared her breakfast, put her spare clothes and snacks into her gym bag and attempted to tie her hair up in a ponytail. Everything seemed to go wrong. Her bangs were somehow even more annoying than they usually were. They refused to be clipped back, joining a few strands of short hair that couldn’t be contained. After slapping a shit ton of gel in her hair, she still wasn’t satisfied but left it at that. After that, she realized her breakfast had too much salt and not enough seasoning. When she tried to add more seasoning, she overdid it so now her breakfast was inedible. She couldn’t find the good coffee-sugar ratio and her coffee ended up too sweet and cold. She just wanted to curl up and bawl her eyes out. This day couldn’t get worse.
Except it did get worse. Because she took so long to do her hair and try to save her breakfast and coffee, she almost missed the train and had to stand with somehow drunk and smelly men in the morning and it made her nauseous. She had to walk for 10 minutes to get to the gym so she decided to get herself a coffee from the convenience store. When she made her way to the fridge, she saw that they hadn't restocked her favorite coffee flavor. She internally cursed the wrinkly bitch for it and made her way to the gym. While she was on the stairs, she had a cramp in her asshole. Great. Just great. She might as well jump off of a building now.
By the time she made it to her teammates she had already used
all of her energy and her patience was at zero. Thankfully she heard Atsumu greet their teammates and waited for her to make it to the locker room where Kiyoomi was.
Atsumu’s bright smile was almost enough to make up for all the shit Kiyoomi went through. Said almost because there was more to come.
Atsumu made her way to Kiyoomi and pulled her into a tight hug.
“Missed ya Omi” Kiyoomi melted into the hug and put her head on her shoulder.
“I missed you too. I feel like shit.”
“Ah. Your period?” Atsumu said as she ran a hand up and down her back.
“That too. But I think I catched a cold. Also everything is going wrong today.”
“I’ll make you that tomato soup you liked when we finish practice okay? Gonna spoil you rotten. Just please don’t bluetooth your period to me. I am not ready for it.”
Kiyoomi tries to scoff but she couldn’t help but laugh. It was silly but after a few months of dating, their periods started to come back to back. Atsumu liked to say they bluetooth it to each other.
“Can’t wait to be done with practice so I can go home eat soup and sulk all day.”
She didn’t see the bad part yet though.
She struggled to breathe after running, she felt waves of nausea, her head started to spin when she jumped and her legs felt unsteady. She couldn’t play volleyball without jumping and running and she had to rely on her teammates more than usual. She didn’t remember feeling this useless in a while.
After a hellish training session, all she wanted to do was go home and shower. But she couldn’t risk her sweat drying on her and getting even more sick so she took her shower in the gym building while Atsumu waited for her.
They walked to the train station with comfortable silence hand in hand. Kiyoomi seemed to be too tired to keep a conversation going so Atsumu didn’t attempt to start any.
After a long and grimier than usual train ride, they reached Kiyoomi’s apartment. First thing Atsumu did was help Kiyoomi get undressed and check her temperature. It’s 39C so just a mild fever. Enough to make her shiver from time to time though. So Atsumu discards her weather and gives her a t-shirt to wear, then sticks a cold patch to her forehead and kisses her on the cheek, letting her rest as she goes to the kitchen to prepare her favorite tomato soup. She makes the soup extra thick this time just like Kiyoomi likes. She doesn’t forget the garlic bread on the side. When all there is left to do is wait for them to be cooked, she goes to check on Kiyoomi to find her sleeping. It’s time to change the cold patch so she tries to change it without waking her up but she fails. Kiyoomi slowly blinks her eyes open as she tries to understand what is going on.
“Atsumu… is the soup ready?”
“It’s gonna be ready in 15 minutes baby. Also made you some garlic bread with the soup. Now we need to change this though.”
“You’re the best.”
After Atsumu is done changing her up, she goes to the kitchen to check if the soup is ready to eat. After putting the soup in a bowl and plating the garlic bread, she makes her way to Kiyoomi curled up in a ball. She puts a pillow on her back and makes her sit up straight so she can feed her the soup.
Kiyoomi doesn’t even claim that she can drink it herself and lets Atsumu feed her. She makes sure the soup is cool enough not to burn her tongue and she slowly finishes up the soup and the garlic bread.
Atsumu washes the dishes because she doesn’t want her to feel overwhelmed with chores. When she’s done she quickly gets into the bed with Kiyoomi and she doesn’t even wait until she’s fully in the bed to wrap her arms around her and bury her face to her neck.
“Do ya feel better, Omi?”
“Yeah. Much better now that my stomach is full. Thank you for the meal. I love you.”
“Anything for ya my big baby. Do you want to sleep again or do you want me to put on a movie or something?”
“I want to keep sleeping. My head still hurts, we can watch a movie tomorrow. We don’t have practice anyway.”
And like that, they sleep like bears in winter sleep for the rest of the day. Not without Kiyoomi bluetoothing her period to Atsumu though.
