The End of First Year

The months flew by and before James knew it, it was time for summer break and the inevitable start of second year.

-

After the disaster on Pete’s birthday, the Christmas holidays came.

The Potters were the classic Christmas loving families you’d see on American TV. James hadn’t made up Sirius and Remus left school early, so it was just James and Peter. They bugged McGonagall until she’d threatened them with a year’s worth of detention, they messed around with students, practicing and trying new hexes and whatever else. Then, they left together on the train back home. James made Peter promise to write to him as soon as they got home and to meet for Christmas.

Christmas as usual was a charming event.

Traditions were a big deal. Euphemia Potter would knit six large and ugly socks, all unmatching and they’d all scramble to pick a pair. There were lots of presents, hot coco and storytelling. It was perfect.

After new years came the spring term on 3rd January.

Sirius sat with them and behaved as though nothing was wrong. In fact, he and Remus seemed to be much closer than before. Whenever James tried to talk to Sirius that term about their fight, Sirius would brush him off.

“All is well. We both were wrong and that’s okay. Whatever happened, happened. Let’s just focus on making good things happen now.”

That was one of his favorite lines to use on James.

The second term brought many birthday revelations.

Snivellus was born in January 9th. How sad it was for the date to have someone like Snivellus be born on it James remarked. Lily was also born in January, the 30th specifically. James would give her a card, while he blushed profusely. He’d get teased about it later on by Sirius.

Remus was born in March 10th. And he strictly forbade any celebrations, which of course, when ignored. They smuggled a cake from the kitchen and magicked balloons and whatever else festive materials they could and celebrated amongst themselves in a empty room.

Then it was James’s turn. And he got the biggest and grandest out of the four. Probably because he was the most liked. Because school would end on 1st April, and James’s birthday was Macrh 27th, he’d receive his gifts from his family when he went home for Easter holidays.

Days after days after days passed. There were tests, there was homework and many quizzes. And of course, the end.

23rd June 1972 – The train ride home

“You can come to my house.” James suggested. Sirius had been ranting about he didn’t want to see his family for the Summer Holidays. He kept complaining and complaining until James felt forced to suggest his house.

“I doubt they’d let me visit.” Secretly, James was relieved. He liked Sirius, but he didn’t know if he could handle him living in the hallway down. Though, he did survive Hogwarts with him.

“Well, as long as you write, that’ll be alright. That goes for all you, we have to continue to write and update each other.” There were no objections to James’s statement and everyone nodded in compliance.

The rest of the train ride was a blur, a blur filled with laughter and tears.

“We have a surprise for you James!” Fleamont’s voice was filled with excitement.

James looked up, waiting curiously.

“Your mother’s pregnant!”
