A family called Rose

Allyssa had always been proud to say she had left Hogwarts with straight Os and had had the ministry begging her to train to be an aurror, and then that look on her mentor's face when she chose to pursue potions...

But this had been one time a Troll would have been better than being correct with flying colours. A few days past after her and Harry's heart to heart. Then weeks. Then-

"Harry! Come on, your eggs are getting cold!"

"Coming mum!" Came a muffled reply from upstairs.

Allyssa sat down. She was sat at the dining table with a cup of tea in her hands and some scrambled eggs on toast on the table in front of her. Their was also something-or rather, things-on the table and the floor surrounding the table for Harry.

Harry was in his room, sat on his bed, tying his shoe laces. It was his room and his bed, which Allyssa said no one could force him out of because it was his.

The room was massive! He had a wardrobe with new clothes that Allyssa had bought for him, a four poster double bed with night blue sheets and curtains with white pillows, in one corner of the room was a white square fuzzy carpet surrounded by bookcases decorated with owls all over the cream colour. Harry also had a large treasure chest in another corner full of toys, all bought by Allyssa. But Harry's two favourite things about the room (apart from the bed) was his own bathroom, which he decorated with quidditch posters, and his window, the view was fantastic! The whole woodlands was alive with colour and the bright summer sun.

Harry didn't go to muggle school, instead Allyssa taught him all the muggle lessons and many, many wizard lessons. She was a very good teacher and Harry learnt fast. Very fast. He wanted to know everything about the wizarding world. Every spell, every potion and every book and everything in them. Everything.

Eventhough he didn't go to muggle school, Harry had many muggle friends from the village. But his best friend was Allyssa, who he called mum.

Harry ran down the stairs, wearing blue jeans, his favourite bright green shirt with a dark green stripe along the collar and a pair of army green trainers.

He rushed into the dining room. Then froze in shock.

Surrounding Allyssa on the table were lots and lots of smartly wrapped presents, many with golden bows.

"Happy birthday, Harry."

Harry couldn't respond. He could only stare at the scene, stunned.

He was five today. Five years old. It had been one whole year since that day, and Harry had loved every day since. He loved his room, he loved the village, he loved the books and he loved his new mum. His birthday wish had come true.

"You got me presents?" He asked unable to think of anything else to say.

"It wasn't just me. The twin Johnson boys gave you two, Michi got you three and the James brothers got you five. The rest are from me and I think Erin and Romeo's is arriving later" she took a sip of her tea. "Well? Aren't you going to open them?"

Harry didn't need to be asked twice.

He began to tear the paper open and yanking out the gifts.

Harry had dubbed his fourth birthday as the best birthday ever. But this had come a close second place.

Allyssa had given him a muggle games console with several muggle games so he could play with his friends from the village, a new leather jacket, five of his very own books on spells and potions that Allyssa was going to teach him and a broomstick.

"Wow..." Harry gasped as he held the broom in his hands.

"It's a beginner's broom. Nothing too fancy, just something to help you start," Allyssa informed him.

Despite Harry only living with her for a year, she felt the motherly urge to protect him, so she hadn't been sure if she should buy him a broomstick. But he was clearly happy, so she pushed her concerns aside. For now.

From his friends, Harry got lots of muggle sweets, some superhero action figures and some dinosaur figures. Michi had even given him some bongos.

"She's sweet on you!" Allyssa teased.

"No she's not!" Harry stuck his tongue out in disgust. "That's gross, mum!"

Allyssa just grinned and ate a slice of buttered toast.

Harry settled down at the table and began to eat his scrambled eggs on toast.

But he couldn't concentrate on his food. He was too busy staring out of the window, waiting for Captain January. Captain January was Erin Rose's owl, a scruffy dark brown creature with wide dark eyes. He was hoping the mysterious Erin would send him a present.

Erin was Allyssa's younger sister by two years and a true globetrotter. She had left home at seventeen and began travelling, sending her sister letters twice a week.

She'd lived in Sweden, Ireland, Greece, Egypt, many states in America, Russia, France, Spain, Australia (a continent, not a country), Canada, India, Japan, to name but a few.

But, years ago, she married a wizard in Italy called Matteo and adopted his son, Romeo. But, sadly, Matteo had died eleven months earlier. It hit the pair hard and they had decided to carry on with Erin's globetrotting adventure.

Harry was yet to meet them, but from what he had heard, he really wanted to!

But Captain January didn't show up during breakfast.

After breakfast Allyssa walked Harry to his friend Michi's house.

Michi was younger than Harry, she had just turned four. She had long blonde hair, which were often in pigtails, big brown eyes, and a delicate build.

Allyssa had planned a birthday party, despite Harry telling her she didn't have to. But she insisted. She seemed to have the whole thing planned out, but hadn't told Harry a thing about where it would be or who would be there.

So, for the morning, while Allyssa prepared for the party, Harry spent time with Michi and her mum baking crispy cakes the muggle way. Harry loved this process (especially licking the chocolate off of the bowl!) even if he thought the magic way was much faster. He had a lot of fun, which was a huge change than his previous birthdays.

At about one o'clock there was a knock at the door which turned out to be Allyssa, wearing a huge grin, who told them the party was ready.

Harry felt a sense of excitement as he walked through the village with his mum, Michi and her parents. He found himself gazing around trying to see where they were going as they travelled along the village road, they seemed to be walking towards the James family farm.

And then he saw it.

The James family barn had been turned into a party house.

The outside of the barn had a massive banner which read 'Happy Birthday Harry' in large green letters. And inside the large open barn doors was a mass crowd full of parents and children. It was clear Harry's friends (Michi, David and Damien Johnson, and Peter, Spencer, Lance, Curtis and Tommy James) had invited some people from school to make up the numbers.

Harry felt overwhelmed and found himself choking back tears as he remembered his last birthday party... or rather Colin's. His life had change so dramatically in the course of a year. He finally felt no need to be the silent Potter son anymore. And that was a huge relief!

The party was fantastic! The newcomers were so nice and even gave Harry presents! Some even bought two! ("Thank goodness for Capacious extremis!" Allyssa whispered discreetly in Harry's ear with a grin)

The party wasn't as good as Harry had hoped.

It was better than he could have possible imagine!

Granted, there wasn't any magic spells, games, or even references throughout the whole party, (baring Allyssa's comments) but Harry had a fantastic time and went home skipping happily, Michi in tow, while Allyssa carried the presents with the help of Michi's parents back to Bouton De Rose.

Later on in the evening, Harry and Allyssa were sat on a blanket, using spells to turn tiny sticks into birds and watching them flutter around whilst devouring some leftover birthday cake. The scene was very relaxed and peaceful, until...

"LYSSA!"

Both Harry and Allyssa's heads shot in the direction of the voice. It had come from a woman marching strongly towards them.

She had hair the colour of gravy with long Shirley Temple curls falling around her shoulders and also had Allyssa's pale eyes, glistening in the remaining sunlight. She was very pretty. She smiled at the pair with dimples.

"ERIN!" Allyssa squealed with delight and ran over to her sister and pulled her into her arms.

Erin was wearing a leopard print tight shirt with some shorts. And, although she was also wearing brown heeled boots, it was evident that she was shorter than her sister.

Harry also noticed a boy standing a few steps behind his mum, clutching a backpack over his shoulder (Clearly both of these twos' bags had had Capacious extremis cast on them). He had natural slight tanned skin, black natural curled hair and caramel eyes.

Harry took a breath and walked over to him.

"Hello, I'm Harry," he grinned at the boy he supposed was his cousin.

The boy grinned back. Harry was secretly relieved.

"I'm Romeo. Call me Rome if you want."

Erin and Romeo were as fun as Allyssa had told him!

After Allyssa had introduced Harry to her sister as she wiped away her tears of shock and joy, the four went inside the house and settled on the dining table with mugs of hot chocolate.

"Erin, not to sound unhappy in the slightest, but why didn't you tell me you were coming?" Allyssa asked.

Erin smirked at Romeo, who gladly returned it.

"Well, we bought Harry his present in France. We then thought: 'Allyssa's had this little boy for a year now and we still haven't met him!' so we decided to come here for his birthday."

"We would've been here this morning if those muggles hadn't cancelled four trains!" Romeo moaned, rolling his eyes. "Ma, why couldn't we just travel by floo powder?"

"Because the muggle way can be fun!"

"Numerous delays isn't fun!"

"So you got me a present?" Harry asked eagerly.

"Oh yes, the present!" Erin smiled at him. "Give it to him Rome!"

Romeo pulled out a wrapped box from his bag and handed it to Harry, who thanked him greatly. He ripped open the present to see a wizards cloak inside.

"We met a wizard in Paris who was making cloaks that change colour-"

"The cloak changes colour?" Harry asked with disbelief.

"Oh yes!" Erin replied. "Put it on!"

Harry shoved on the gift. It remained the same colour, black.

"Say the colour you want it to be!" Romeo urged him.

After a moment of thought, Harry said "Bright green."

The cloak slowly but surely began to change, darkness becoming brighter and more colourful, until it stopped at a bright green. Just as Harry requested.

"Wow..." was all Harry could say.

Harry was awake bright and early the next morning. He rushed downstairs wearing his birthday cloak, which was still the same green it had been last night.

Upon arriving in the kitchen, he noticed a newspaper laid out on the counter.

He picked it up and read:

BOY WHO LIVED TURNS 5!

Last night, Colin Potter, the Boy Who Lived, turned five years old. The boy, who lives with his parents, James and Lily Potter, had a massive party at the family mansion in Suffolk. A mass amount of pure blood families were in attendance. Colin could be seen with his beloved parents as he blew out his candles and asked his mother if he actually had to share the cake. Lily Potter, when asked about her son, stated: "I'm the proudest mother in the world! I have the best son anybody could possibly beg the angels for! He is such a pleasure!" James Potter also commented: "Colin is my one and only perfect son, to think he is five now is unbelieveable!" The mudblood witch-

"Good morning, Harry!"

Harry turned around. Auntie Erin and his mum were came into the kitchen, rubbing they're eyes.

"Want some pancakes?"

"Yes please!"

Later on in the day, the family went for a walk.

Harry wore old jeans and an old grey shirt and his faded trainers, knowing that the area by the stream would definitely be muddy.

His aunt and cousin had disagreed and looked like they regretted it, especially Romeo who had insisted on wearing his white robes. Now he looked hot, sweaty, and muddy.

After a short while, Harry found himself stood next to his mum, with his aunt and cousin out of the way, he asked her "Mum, what's a mudblood?"

Allyssa stopped dead in her tracks. She slowly turned to face him. "Where did you hear that?"

Harry gulped, hoping he wasn't in trouble, he replied, "The Prophet this morning. They called a witch a mudblood."

Allyssa gritted her teeth in anger. "Surely they knew... children would see that..?"

"Mum, what is a mudblood? Is it someone with mud instead of blood inside them?"

Allyssa smiled faintly, before looking Harry in the eye through his round glasses. "No Harry... You remember when I told you my family is ancient?"

"And Noble!" Harry added.

"Quite," Allyssa deflected. "Being an ancient wizarding family means that everyone in your family is magic and there are no muggles in your family, making them pure bloods. Understand?"

Harry nodded. Allyssa had taught him lots of spells and lots of potions and told him many stories about wizardry. But never one like this.

"There are also squibs. Squibs are people who are born to magic parents, but have no magic of their own."

"Like Angus Buchanan?" asked Harry.

"Exactly! And there are also half bloods. These are people who have both wizards and muggles in their family."

"So what's a mudblood?"

Allyssa sighed, took a deep breath, and answered, "Some wizards and witches don't have any relatives who have magic. They were born to be muggles, but have magic instead. They are called muggle borns."

"So why did the Prophet call that witch a mudblood?"

"Some wizards and witches, mostly pure bloods, think they are better than them because they believe they have more rights to the wizard gene because they have a greater and more powerful hertitage."

"That sounds stupid."

"Exactly Harry!" She breathed a sigh of relief. "These people who call others mudbloods are just wrong and stupid. You need to promise me that you won't ever think of yourself as better than anyone based on blood position, okay?"

Harry held up three fingers. "Promise!"

"But you shouldn't think of yourself as less than anyone either. Not a pure blood or your brother. Every wizard and witch is powerful in one way or another. No one is better than anyone else. Understand?"

Harry continued to hold up his fingers. "Understood!"

"Good," she ruffled his hair. "Thank you. Now- look at those two!"

Harry turned around and saw his aunt and cousin, holding their white clothes while gazing at the stream, furiously trying not to get muddy.

Harry thought that was ridiculous. If they didn't want to get muddy then they should have stayed at home!

An idea popped into Harry's head. He picked up two handfuls of mud by the stream.

"Not scared of mud are you?" he asked with a giggle.

The pair turned around curious, then quickly looked... afraid?

"Oh don't you dare! Don't you dare! Don't you- Ah!"

Harry threw the handfuls at the two. It splattered upon impact, sending mud everywhere. Harry began to throw more from the ground under him.

"Allyssa! Control your- oh no..." Erin groaned.

Allyssa marched over, two handfuls of mud in her hands, and joined Harry in his game.

"Oh that's it! This is war!" yelled Romeo. He grabbed some mud and began to fight back.

Soon after that, Erin joined in.

By the time the family got back to Bouton De Rose, they were muddy enough to put the James family pigs to shame.

Harry couldn't sleep that night. He was far too excited!

Erin and Romeo were as fun as Harry had heard!

And his mum had agreed to going with Erin and Romeo to spend the summer in Hawaii!

Harry got out of bed and decided to ask his mum for a drink. He crept down the stairs silently and saw one of the doors in the hall open. He sat on the stairs, peering through the banister.

His mum and aunt Erin were sat on a sofa with their backs to him. They appeared to be catching up with one another.

"Sounds to me like you've basically adopted Harry! You should just ask the Potters to hand over parental rights, it's not like they're missing him or anything!"

"I'm working on it. But I thought you really admired the Potter family?"

Although he couldn't see her, Harry expected that his aunt had pulled a face.

"At first, yeah. It was hard to find another family so dedicated to fighting for the future of the wizarding world. Plus, they were in my year at Hogwarts. But after the attack it's painfully obvious, to me anyway, that those two are just fame hungry. I mean, they alert the press if Colin's hair lightens in summer! And after hearing the stories Harry told you... it's hard not to not hate them!"

"I know, it's disgusting," Allyssa leant forward and picked up a mug and drank from it. Harry figured it was probably hot chocolate. (Allyssa never drank tea or coffee past 8:30pm)

"What do you mean by your 'working on it'?" Erin used her fingers for effect.

Allyssa took another sip and answered, "Wardship, steps set in place many years ago, used mainly for apprentices. The process takes a total of seven years. First year is over with, I've proved Harry has lived with me without parental support from his parents, who know, from being notified in a letter, where he is. Now I have guardianship, which can last for five years. Then there will be a year where I am given the same rights to Harry as his parents. After that year I will be given full rights to Harry that override any rights the parents have left, making me the solo parent."

"Have Lily and James been informed?"

"They must've been, seeing as the wardship is being done through the ministry for magic."

"And by the time Harry goes to Hogwarts he'll be more a Rose than a Potter!"

"If he goes to Hogwarts. But, yes, you're right."

"If he goes?"

Allyssa put her cup back on the coffee table in front of her. "Harry's smart."

"I know-"

"No, you don't," she sat up straighter. "He's very smart. I've been giving him lessons on wizardry for the last year and he's already mastered the first year! He's due to go to Hogwarts in six years, by which time he might know the whole curriculum!"

Erin whistled. "That's impressive for a five year old...I'm surprised more that his parents didn't notice it."

"Or they may have noticed it and blamed it on their golden boy."

"Golden boy! Ha! He'll grow up to be a spoilt brat who expects nothing less than perfect for himself. If you asked me, I'd say Harry is much worthier to be the Boy Who Lived."

Harry walked quietly back to bed, feeling very content.
