Sounds of Silence & California Dreamin'
Though the girls did tend to have varying tastes in music, there was one muggle song they all quite liked. They discussed their song choice in the back of the room, very 'hush-hush', in an attempt to make it a surprise for the group. When they finally decided, they went to their respective spots on the makeshift stage, and Sirius stood up to hand Y/N back the sheet music.
"Thanks love, but we don't need the sheets. This one's a classic and we already know it." Y/N winked at Sirius, as he sat back down on his boyfriend's lap.
"Okay Ladies, wow us!" Sirius hollered, cupping his hands around his mouth like a megaphone.
James started cheering, shouting cute sentiments like "Go Lily!" and "You rock!". Y/N tried not to roll her eyes. She was happy for them. She really was. Not jealous. Totally not jealous.
Y/N leaned down into the microphone, the enchantments on it amplifying her voice through the room. "Alright folks, you already know this one." She looked over at Lily, who counted them in with three taps of her drum sticks.
The music started, and Y/N began to sing.
Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
She winked at Sirius. They'd had a joke about this song throughout their whole friendship. Whenever one of them was in a mood, they could cheer up the other by singing this song. Usually it would be Sirius, wallowing in self-pity. Y/N could just walk up to him, hold her fist up like a microphone, start singing, and eventually Sirius would laugh and join in until they were tangled up on the couch laughing, troubles long forgotten. Y/N knew Sirius would like this choice, and she regretted being cross with him this morning. She was extending an olive branch, one she knew he had accepted when he laughed at her wink.
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
The group was looking up at them now, maybe not in awe, but shocked to say the least. The girls had always figured that the boys assumed this was just their way of passing time- not something they were actually quite passionate about. But that didn't matter now. Whatever they had assumed, they knew now that these girls were in their element, and totally rocking. The music began to pick up.
In restless dreams, I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a streetlamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
Y/N chased the high notes and tapped her foot to the beat, entranced by the lyrics of the song she loved so much. They continued singing, and on the last verse, her very favorite verse, she was in her own world. It felt like her moment.
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
In tenement halls"
She looked over at Marlene, who's eyes were already staring to meet her gaze. They shared a smile as they finished off the song.
And whispered in the sounds of silence
As soon as Marlene struck that last note, the room erupted in cheers from their friends. Dorcas and Peter were no longer wrapped up in each other, now cheering and clapping for them. Sirius had opted for a standing ovation, screaming "BRAVO!" over and over. While Remus cheered them on from his spot on the couch, and James practically jumped Lily to tell her just how incredible she was.
"That was marvelous girls," Remus cheered. The girls blushed with embarrassment, not from the awkwardness of playing in front of other people, but just from how kind and incredible there friends were.
Sirius practically jumped to the stage, slinging an arm around Y/N's shoulders, "Woah there N/N, you've got some serious pipes on you! Might even rival yours truly!" she laughed and lightly punched him in the arm. Marlene eyed him sharply from her spot on the stage.
Mary chimed in, "Well guys, if you'll have us, we do have another song we could play for you."
Their friends cheered, various exclamations of "Yes!" and "Please let it be Bohemian Rhapsody!" (that last one was all Sirius.)
"Not Bohemian Rhapsody Sirius," Lily called, "But I think you'll like it. Now sit!" Sirius obeyed and scrambled back to his seat.
Y/N looked back, nodded at Mary, then Marlene, then Lily, a signal to count them in. Lily hit the sticks together three times before Marlene struck those famous first notes, and she took the role of lead singer.
All the leaves are brown (all the leaves are brown)
The drums and bass picked up, and Marlene's voice echoed through the room, Y/N's softer voice singing the background vocals.
And the sky is gray (and the sky is gray)
I've been for a walk (I've been for a walk)
On a winter's day (on a winter's day)
I'd be safe and warm (I'd be safe and warm)
If I was in L.A. (if I was in L.A.)
California dreamin' (California dreamin')
On such a winter's day
Stopped into a church
Marlene's eyes locked with Y/N's across the stage.
I passed along the way
Well, I got down on my knees
Marlene's eyes stayed locked on Y/N's. She tried not to gulp, joining back into the song.
(got down on my knees)
And I pretend to pray (I pretend to pray)
Their gazes broke apart, and Y/N opted to look back out to her friends sprawled out on the couch, hoping she wasn't blushing. Apparently, her hope was not the reality. She caught Sirius looking between her and Marlene, then back to her again, raising an eyebrow in question. She flashed him a quick dirty look, then continued backing Marlene's vocals.
You know the preacher like the cold (preacher like the cold)
He knows I'm gonna stay (knows I'm gonna stay)
California dreamin' (California dreamin')
On such a winter's day
All the leaves are brown (all the leaves are brown)
And the sky is gray (and the sky is gray)
I've been for a walk (I've been for a walk)
On a winter's day (on a winter's day)
If I didn't tell her (if I didn't tell her)
I could leave today (I could leave today)
California dreamin' (California dreamin')
On such a winter's day (California dreamin')
On such a winter's day (California dreamin')
On such a winter's day
The song ended again, and more cheers, clapping, and smiles were found throughout the room. She looked back at Marlene, who once again, was already looking at her (why was she already looking at her?). And quickly hopped off the stage to meet many hugs from her friends. She hugged Sirius last, he held on for a bit longer and whispered in her ear.
"So, McKinnon, eh?" Her heart just about stopped.
