Chapter 1

7th Year:

Y/N woke up to the sound of her alarm going off in the dorm. Groaning, she turned over in bed to look at the clock. It read '7:30am'.

Why was her alarm going off at this time? It was Saturday- she had no classes. She smacked the snooze button and rolled back over.

'Oh shit', she thought. Today was Saturday. Saturday meant (upon Lily's insistence) that they had to wake up at an ungodly hour for band practice .

Scrambling out of bed, Y/N noticed that the only other bandmate still in bed was Marlene. She dashed over to her bed, shaking the poor blonde awake.

"Marlene! Marls! Get up, come on! Lily will kick our arses if we're late!" Y/N shouted at the sleepy girl.

"Bugger off now will ya? Tryin-a sleep." Marlene mumbled, her voice muffled by her pillow.

"No chance. I'm sure as hell more scared of Lils than I am of you. Get up." Y/N insisted.

Begrudgingly, Marlene got out of bed, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. "What time is it anyways?" she grumbled- still peeved about being woken up.

"7:35 Marls, band practice is at 8:30 and we've still got to go down to the hall for breakfast."

"Right then- I'll start getting ready."

Apparently, Marlene and Y/N had very different ideas of what 'getting ready' meant. While Y/N styled her hair and put on a quick coat of mascara and eyeliner as well as donning her more 'rockstar-looking' clothes, Marlene's first order of business was to have her morning cig. She propped open the window and lit her cig with a tap of her wand, relishing in the way the smoke burned through her lungs. Y/N would never admit that she found it quite hot. There was something about the way she held the cigarette to her lips, or maybe her sultry 'French inhale' that made Y/N blush. But, Marlene was her friend. Her best friend. She wouldn't pursue this fascination, but that didn't mean she couldn't admire, right?

"Lily would kill you if she caught you smoking that in here." Y/N grumbled, arms crossed.

"Well, Lily isn't here, is she? 'suppose you'll just have to keep this secret for me." Marlene drawled, never halting eye contact.

This made Y/N blush. She hoped Marlene couldn't see it, even in the light streaming in from the window.

"Want one?" She questioned, holding the pack of cigs up in offering. Her voice was muffled around the cig still in her mouth.

Y/N thought for a minute. Today's practice was mostly focused on the instruments. One wouldn't hurt, it wasn't like she hadn't before. She walked up to Marlene, who began to take out a cigarette for her. In this moment, Y/N wasn't sure exactly what came over her. Call it stupidity, or boldness, she didn't care. Rather than taking the fresh cig from Marlene, she brought her hand up to Marlene's face (she had thought that Marlene's eyes had widened a bit, but it must've been a trick of the morning light), and plucked the cigarette from Marlene's lips, bringing it to her own and taking a long draw of it. She exhaled out the window, Marls still had her eyes fixed on her.

She handed it back to Marlene after a second puff, "Don't think I could stomach a whole one before breakfast, thanks though."

Marlene just nodded, and turned back to the window to finish her cig. "You ought to get ready now though, we should really head down," Y/N stated.

Her head felt a bit dizzy- she wasn't sure if it was the cigarette, or maybe it was just how close she had been to Marlene. Not just physically, but there was something so intimate about sharing a cigarette. About knowing that something that Marlene's lips were touching was still stained with her red lipstick. She brushed away the thoughts and finished the final touches on her outfit- a belt, some beat-up leather shoes, and a few stacked rings. By the time she had finished accessorizing, Marlene had swiped on some eyeliner, mascara, and lip gloss. She'd also put on her outfit for the day- some ripped jeans, a white shirt, and her signature leather jacket. She looked good. Like really good.

"You ready?" Y/N questioned, trying to brush away her thoughts.

"Yeah, let's go."
