Who The Hell Are You? Part 11
Summary
Harry meets himself from a different reality. Will this person help him with his fight with Voldemort? Or will he set him on a different path?

Thanks for reading and reviewing.

I got a review on my other story that my chapter sounded like it was AI written. Believe me, you will know if something is AI written. It is happy, happy, joy, joy. I played with the AI, and it always goes for HEA and never conflicts.

That and that was just insulting to my writing.

Shadow couldn’t believe it, he was here. The park near Privet Dr was empty and the house was occupied by only Petunia and her husband and son. He had just come from there and checked. There was no Harry Potter. For the first time in all his jumping, he was on time. He cast a spell to see the time and date. It was October 30, 1981, 6:05 pm. So, he quickly Apparated to Godric’s Hallow.

He was going to save his parents.

“Shite, the place is under the Fidelus,” he muttered. So, he went to find his godfather. He didn’t know where he was. He wracked his brain then sent the man a Patronus to meet him in the park near the cottage in Godric’s Hollow. He waited there for around five minutes when he heard the sound of the Triumph. He had always loved that motorcycle. He had kept it for many years. They had taken it when he was a Dark Lord, but he got it back. Now it was in his home while he was jumping around realities.

“Who the hell are you?” Sirius asked when he landed the motorbike. He thought the man was James at first, but there was facial hair and a ‘don’t fuck with me’ attitude that his best mate didn’t have.

“I’m Harry from the future. We need to save my parents,” Shadow said without preamble, and a sense of urgency.

“Right, pull the other one,” Sirius said, though there was some doubt in his tone. The man did look a lot like James, and he had Lily’s eyes.

“I can take a vow, or show you memories, or anything that it will take to convince you that I am Harry Potter. But we need to get to James and Lily Potter tonight, or they will be dead by tomorrow,” Shadow said, looking at him desperately.

“Take a vow and I’ll go talk to James,” Sirius conceded, thinking it wouldn’t hurt to hear the man out. If it were a trap, then they could take him. He and James were good duelists. They had faced Death Eaters many times and lived to tell the tale.

“I, Shadow, also known as Harry James Potter, do hereby swear I am Harry James Potter from the future here to save my parents, James and Lily Potter, from death by the hands of Voldemort,” Shadow stated, holding up his wand. The vow took and a glow emanated around his body. It shone for a moment then receded into his body.

“Wow, you really are from the future,” Sirius said, looking at him with awe. He’d heard tales of people being able to jump realities, but he never thought he’d meet one. It was found in the darkest of the tomes in his family’s library. He wondered where the man learned to do it.

“Can you go and get someone to let me in the cottage? I need to see my parents,” the dimensional-hopping man asked. He’d never laid eyes on them, and he really wanted to see them. Then he remembered that Peter Pettigrew was the Secret Keeper, and he’d have to kill the man as soon as he saw him.

“I have the secret right here,” Sirius said, pulling out a strip of paper. He handed it over and Shadow read it, on it was the secret. “Come on,” the dogman said, taking his bike up to push it, and leading the way. They weren’t far from the cottage, so it would only take a few minutes.

The two men walked to the cottage and Shadow was a bit nervous for a man that was usually so brazen. His hands were getting sweaty, and his brow wasn’t much better. He was going to see his mum for the first time in his life, and it hadn’t been a life he could boast about. He had been a Dark Lord after all, and that wasn’t something one would want to brag about to their mum. And it all started with her death.

He was going to prevent that from happening to his counterpart. If he had any say on it, little Harry Potter was going to have his parents.

They walked up to the door and Sirius just walked right in.

Shadow followed much more slowly. He stood in the doorway, waiting to be invited.

“James!” Sirius called, having left his bike in the front yard. “Where are you? I brought a guest.” He was halfway into the living room when his best mate came from up the stairs.

“What? How did you do that?” James called down as he descended the stairs.

“You’ll never believe this. Come on down and meet your son,” Sirius said, waving Shadow to come in.

Shadow stayed where he was. He was hearing their voices, and it was dreamy. They weren’t panicked and not telling him to go to his death. It was wonderful.

“What? Sirius, you’re not making sense. Harry is sleeping upstairs,” Lily said, following her husband down the stairs. “Keep your voice down, we just got him to sleep.”

“Lily, James, this is Shadow. He’s Harry from the future,” Sirius said, waving to Shadow, who was still standing by the door.

The other man walked slowly into the house and stared at the young couple as they walked down the stairs. They were so young. He was their age, if younger by a year or two. It was disconcerting.

Both Lily and James were dumbstruck by the family resemblance. Shadow was the spitting image of James with Lily’s eyes.

“Harry?” Lily said, looking at her baby boy all grown up. She’d know her baby anywhere.

“Mum?” Shadow said, tears in his eyes.

“Oh my god, how did this happen?” she asked, tears now in her eyes as well.

“I’ve been hopping through realities trying to help all the Harrys have a better life than I had. It’s just luck that I happened upon this reality and this time,” Shadow stated, coming up to her and taking her hands into his. She was beautiful.

“What do you mean a better life than yours?” James asked, putting his hand on Shadow’s shoulder. That sounded ominous.

“You two die tomorrow, and I go and live with the Dursleys. It is not a good life. I can tell you more, but we need to get you out of here,” he said, looking around the room like a solution would be handy. Black Isle was out this time. Sirius’s mother was still alive, as was his grandfather. While they could still go, they might be turned over to the Dark Lord. It was not a viable option.

“Leave? We can’t leave,” James said, dropping his hand. “There’s a war going on,” he pointed out. Potters didn’t run from a fight.

“Which you two are being used as pawns in,” Harry said with a bite in his tone. “Dumbledore is using you. Can’t you see that?” he all but begged.

“Dumbledore is a great man,” James stated, glaring at his grown son.

“Look, I know the man better than you do. I grew up poorly due to his mechanisms. He made my life a living hell. He’s the one who put me with the Dursleys, and I almost died every year at Hogwarts due to his games. I can show you the memories of all the times he played with my life. Hell, if it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t be jumping through realities trying to save Harrys,” Shadow said, standing back from Lily and pacing around the small living room. He didn’t want to have this argument. It was like banging his head on a brick wall. He really didn’t want to have it with his own dad.

“I don’t believe you,” James said, folding his arms and looking at the other man.

Sirius was looking at James with something close to disbelief. He never trusted the old man with the blind faith that James did. He had seen how manipulative Dumbledore was, both in school and in the Order. “How do James and Lily die?” he asked, changing the subject.

“Peter gives Voldemort the secret,” was as far as Shadow got when Sirius and James exploded with denial.

“That’s impossible,” James said, throwing up his hands and walking away.

“He wouldn’t do that,” Sirius said, growling and getting in Shadow’s face.

“We’re going to be here all night if you lot aren’t going to believe anything I say. I can prove every word that comes out of my mouth,” Shadow said, pulling a pensieve from his dimensional space. He had learned to set that up ages ago, when he knew he was going to be hopping from one reality to another.

“Just because you have memories doesn’t prove anything. We don’t know the people in those memories,” James said, thinking there wouldn’t be anyone he knew in them.

Shadow dropped the memory of him, Sirius, Remus and Peter in the Shrieking Shack into the pensieve. “You will know these people. Just watch and you will see what I am talking about,” he said, waving to the bowl.

“Go ahead, James. I’ll wait here,” Lily said, still looking at her grown son with some awe. She could feel some anger in him that told her he was telling the truth. She believed every word that he was saying, but James needed to see it.

James and Sirius went into the pensieve and watched the memory, while Lily went to the kitchen and got some drinks for everyone. She felt they were going to need something stronger than tea when they were done.

When she came back, she handed one to her son and said, “You’re darker than us.”

Harry hung his head and nodded. “I had a rough life,” was all he offered.

“I can tell,” she said, putting her hand on his arm. “Was Petunia really that bad?” she asked, knowing her sister was a shrew, but thought she would treat a baby with some decency. She guessed she was wrong. It was a pity.

“Her and her husband. They don’t like magic. It could have been worse. They didn’t hit me much,” he said, watching the bodies of his father and godfather. He really couldn’t look into his mum’s eyes.

“Oh, baby, they shouldn’t have hit you at all,” she said, squeezing his arm.

“It wasn’t that bad,” he said again, patting her hand. “It was better after I got my Hogwarts letter,” he added, remembering those years. His own room, Hedwig and all that.

“I am sure it was much worse than you are telling me,” she said softly. She dropped her hand and looked up the stairs where her baby lay. She didn’t want that for her son. This man was here to prevent that. No matter what James wanted, she was going to prevent that.

Just then James and Sirius came out of the pensieve, and they were frowning. It was as if they wanted not to believe what they saw but couldn’t refute it.

“That was intense,” Sirius said, running his hand down his face. He couldn’t believe how horrible he had looked in the future. He looked like a madman, an emaciated madman.

“Why was Sirius in Azkaban?” James asked, looking at Shadow.

“Didn’t they explain that in the memory?” the dimensional-hopper asked, trying to remember when he started the memory.

“It was vague. I get that Peter was the one to turn us over to You-Know-Who and that he killed fifteen people but not how that pertained to Sirius being in Azkaban,” James said, looking at Shadow like it was his fault.

“He framed Sirius for his crimes,” Shadow said, like it was a duh. He wasn’t overly impressed with his dad. Then again, he just found out that one of his best friends was about to betray him. Perhaps he should cut him a break. “Do you believe me now?” he asked, knowing that Sirius did just by the look on his face.

“About Peter, yes, but about Dumbledore, no,” James said, folding his arms in defiance.

“Did he tell you about the prophecy?” was the question.

“What prophecy?” Lily asked, concerned that there might be something that pertained to her son.

“There’s a prophecy that says that Harry will be the one to take on the Dark Lord,” Shadow informed them, taking the memory out and putting it in the pensieve and waving for James and Lily to view it.

The two parents bent over and did that. Sirius and Shadow just stared at each other while they did that, both drinking their firewhiskey but not talking. Shadow because he didn’t know what to say to the young man. Sirius because he was still upset over the memory he had just watched.

The Potters came out of the pensieve and sputtered. “No, we must go,” Lily said, firmly. She whirled on her husband and poked a finger in his chest. “We will not let our son stay here and be used as a tool in a war,” she stated, going up the stairs to start packing. “I will leave without you,” she declared halfway up the stairs.

“Do you see what you’ve done?” James demanded, glaring at Shadow. “You made my wife mad at me,” he said, looking up the stairs where Lily had gone.

“Good, maybe you will listen now. You must leave England. Harry’s life will be miserable if he stays here,” Shadow said, returning the stare with one of his own. “I should know, it was my life.” He was getting tired of trying to get the man to see that.

“I will not run like a coward,” James said, taking his glass of firewhiskey and throwing it against the wall. It shattered there and left a spatter of amber liquid to slide down the wall. “We are at war,” he reiterated.

“You would put your son’s life behind that of the word of an old man?” Shadow asked, looking at him with disgust.

Sirius was split, he didn’t know what to think. He didn’t want to see his godson have a bad life, but he didn’t want to go against his best friend either. James had been by his side all his Hogwarts career, his family had put him up when he ran from his own home, but this might be a dealbreaker. He would put Harry ahead of James any day. However, he was going to do everything to make sure it didn’t come to that. “James, think about it. You and Harry are the last of your line. If you two die, so does your line,” he said, thinking that might get the man motivated.

“If you stay here, you will be dead by tomorrow night. I am leaving here with Harry and Mum whether you like it or not,” Shadow said, knowing that Lily had already made up her mind. He’d hate to leave his father behind, but if the man was going to be stubborn, then he couldn’t just kidnap him.

“Fine, I’ll come, but I go under protest, and I will be telling Dumbledore where we are when we get there,” James said, going up the stairs to help his wife.

“That’s going to be a problem,” Shadow said to Sirius. “That old man will haunt them for the rest of their lives,” he told the other man. “He’ll pester them until they return.”

“Can’t you protect them?” Sirius asked, knowing that they were going to have to stop and get his things. He was going with them.

Shadow was already shaking his head. “No, I won’t be staying. I must go on and help other Harrys and perhaps other Potters,” he said, looking at him with regret. “I’m hoping you can talk some sense into him. You and Mum.”

“Lily can do it,” Sirius said, knowing who wore the pants in this family. If Lily said that Dumbledore was persona non grata in the house, then that was fact. It might take a fight, but it would happen. He would do his best to back her, but it would happen.

“I’ll stick around for a day or two and show some more of my memories, but we have to leave here tonight,” Shadow said, though he still didn’t know where they were going to go. To a muggle hotel tonight, perhaps the states or Australia after that. If James was still stubborn, then the USA would be best. They were easier to hide in, and they had harsher laws.

James and Lily came down the stairs with baby Harry and a suitcase that probably held more than it looked like. James was scowling and Lily looked worried. Harry was wide awake and looking around like he had no clue why he was so. They were all dressed for the weather and ready to go.

“Where are we going?” James growled out.

“We’re going to the muggle world for now. We can discuss where to go from there,” Shadow said, going to the door. He led the way to the street and then called the Knight Bus. From there they went to the Leaky Cauldron. Then he went to the hotel he normally took Harrys too. They obtained two hotel rooms, one for him and Sirius, and one for the Potters. Shadow paid since he was the only one with muggle money.

“Rest for tonight, and we’ll talk about it tomorrow,” Shadow told the Potters as he handed them the key. “Please hold off on telling Dumbledore until I have told you everything,” he requested, looking at James when he said it.

Lily put her hand on her husband’s arm and gave him a look.

“Fine,” the dour man said, taking the key and storming into the room.

“He’ll do as you ask,” Lily said, as she bounced Harry on her hip. He was sleeping again but being fussy. There was a lot of light in the hallway, and it was bothering the sleepy toddler.

“It’s his downfall if he doesn’t. I didn’t lie, Dumbledore isn’t to be trusted,” Shadow said, going to his room, which was three doors down. Sirius was right behind him. They hadn’t stopped to get his things, but he would do that when they settled in the room.

“I believe you,” she said, going into the room with a look that said that she would be talking to her husband.

Hphphp

The next morning, Shadow took them down to breakfast and then back up to the Potter’s room. Lily put Harry down and placed a toddler’s ward around him with some of his toys to play with. It was like a playpen, but magical. The grownups went to one of the beds and sat to talk.

“Okay, what can I do to convince you that leaving is the best thing to do? And to do it without telling the headmaster?” Shadow asked, leveling a look at James.

“It will take a lot to convince me of that,” the grumpy man stated, though he was much more amiable this morning. It seemed that Lily had some words with him the night before.

“I can show you some of my memories of my years in Hogwarts. My fights with the troll, the basilisk, the Dark Lord, the dragon. Which do you want to see?” Shadow asked, reaching for the pensieve and putting it on the bed between them. “I won’t even go into all the times the teachers tried to kill me,” he added.

“You fought what?!” James and Lily shouted, making Harry and Sirius start.

“What do you mean?” Sirius asked, catching up with them.

Harry continued to happily play with his toys.

“I speak the truth,” the younger man said, pulling out the memory of the troll first. It was his youngest memory and that should jar them into seeing that he was being honest. “This is when I was eleven. I fought a troll. It’s my first adventure in Hogwarts,” he informed them.

“I’m not watching that,” Lily said, going to play with Harry. “I will not watch my baby being hurt.”

James and Sirius watched the memory and were upset when they emerged. “I cannot believe that there was a troll in Hogwarts. Why didn’t you run?” James asked, looking at Shadow like he had been crazy for being there.

“And leave Hermione to face it alone? Not on your life,” the other man said.

“How does this pertain to Dumbledore?” Sirius wanted to know.

“He sent us to our dorms instead of keeping us in the Great Hall where we would have been safe,” Shadow said, tapping his finger on the bed.

“But he didn’t know you were going to be stupid enough to go looking for it,” James said, still being contrary.

“We didn’t go looking for it. We went looking for Hermione,” Shadow said, defending himself and Ron.

“What else do you have?” Sirius asked, wanting to see anything that would change James’s mind.

So, Shadow pulled out the memory of the end of his first year. They watched that and when they came out James was upset at him again. “You should have never gone there. You were just first years,” he stated, all but yelling at his grown son.

“Did you notice that three first years got through those traps?” Shadow said with a sneer. “They were designed for us,” he pointed out.

“Conjecture,” James dismissed.

“Fact,” Shadow rebutted. “I asked and had it confirmed by the man himself. He set it all up so that I would face Voldemort at the end of that year.” That was mostly true. He had talked with the man’s portrait.

“I don’t believe you,” Potter stated, looking away from him.

“You are one stubborn arsehole,” Shadow stated, throwing his hands in the air. “Nothing I show you will convince you. You will debate and excuse everything. I’m done.” He got up and left the room.

“Do I need to check you for spells and potions?” Lily asked, coming up to her husband and waving her wand at him.

“What? Why?” James asked, backing away from her as she cast the spells on him.

“For loyalty spells and compulsion potions,” she stated, continuing to cast on him to make sure he wasn’t under any. “Our son just told you his life was hell, and you dismissed him.” She was very upset with him. He drove their son away. She had wanted to spend the day with him, without arguing with him.

“I am disappointed in you, James,” Sirius said, giving him a hurt puppy dog look. He too had wanted to spend time with Shadow.

“Didn’t you hear what he said about Dumbledore?” James demanded, looking at them like they were crazy.

“He is our son,” Lily said, like that ended the conversation. She was done with her spellwork and saw that he wasn’t under any spells or potions. He was just being obstinate.

“James, you are wrong this time. I am your best mate, and I am telling you that in this case you need to step back and look at it from a different angle. I wouldn’t steer you wrong,” Sirius said, clapping his friend on the back and steering him to the pensieve again. “Watch this again with new eyes. Think about what Shadow said and listen to me when I tell you what I think.”

James grumbled, but he trusted his wife and best friend, so he did what Sirius said, and looked at the memories again. In them he saw his scared son fighting for his life and the lives of his friends. He listened to Sirius and heard what he said. Maybe, just maybe Shadow was right, and Dumbledore wasn’t the god he thought he was.

Hphphp

Meanwhile, Shadow was thinking about what to do about Voldemort. He still needed to die tonight. He would come to the cottage and find it empty and then go after Neville. That was not acceptable. The only thing he could think of was for him to wait for him in the cottage. So, he took himself back to Godric’s Hallow and went to the cottage and sat in the living room and waited.

While he was there, he reflected on how his meeting with his parents had gone. He really didn’t get much time with his mum, but what time he spent with her was treasured. His dad on the other hand… well, it could have been better.

He understood, he really did, but it frustrated him to no end. He was the same way when he was younger. He worshiped the ground the old man walked on, and no one could have told him different. No one had tried though, so he really could not have said if he would have been that stubborn.

It took the better part of the day for him to calm down. It was as the light was leaving the horizon that he finally realized that he had been brooding all day. He cursed himself for being stupid and got ready to receive his guest. He turned on all the lights and waited. It was close to eight in the evening when Voldemort came to the house.

The Dark Lord blew open the door and said, “Stand aside, James Potter. I am here for your son.”

“Fuck off, Voldemort. I am here to stop you,” Shadow said, not at all surprised the man mistook him for his father.

“Then you will die,” Voldemort said, blasting a spell his way.

And the fight began. The two of them exchanged spells for a good ten minutes. Shadow met him spell for spell, which shocked the hell out of the Dark Lord. “You are not James Potter,” he finally said, coming to the realization. He threw a Bone Breaking Curse at Shadow’s head.

“Finally cottoned on to that?” Shadow said, throwing a Killing Curse the man’s way. “What gave me away?” he asked with a laugh.

“James Potter would never use the Dark Arts,” was the answer.

“You’re correct. Too bad you won’t live to tell anyone,” Shadow said, once more throwing the Killing Curse at the Dark Lord, only to have a piece of furniture block it.

“You underestimate me, whoever you are. You should join me; you are not of the Light. I could use a man like you in my ranks, we could rule together,” the Dark Lord offered as he ducked behind a wall leading to the kitchen. He was getting tired. While he had years of experience over this man, the other man was much younger and had more energy.

Shadow acted like he was contemplating that offer for a moment. He angled his way to see into the kitchen and cast a Cutting Curse at the man’s neck. It missed and got his shoulder.

Voldemort yelled and moved away from him, going further into the kitchen.

Shadow summoned some knives from the butcher’s block to stab the man in the back. They came flying at the Dark Lord and would have scored, but…

Voldemort blocked all but one, and it got him in the same shoulder the Cutting Curse did. “Blast you!” he yelled, and he cast the Killing Curse at Shadow.

The dimensional-hopping man ducked and used a pan to block it. He then cast his own Killing Curse at the man’s foot, and it hit.

The Dark Lord slumped over dead. A screaming soul streamed from the body and floated out of the cottage, yelling that it would return. There was no stray soul piece this time.

Shadow collapsed and breathed a sigh of relief. He knew he was going to have to go to Gringotts and see about them hunting the horcruxes. He couldn’t count on James to do it. He didn’t want the Potters in England at all. He was then going to have to warn the Longbottoms to stay hidden for now. Probably via Patronus Charm. He heaved himself up and left the cottage.

He never saw the rat that had seen the whole thing.

Hphphp

After his fruitful visit to Gringotts and one Patronus Charm later, he returned to the hotel. Sirius was in their room, and he was pacing.

“Oh good, you’re back,” Sirius said, looking relieved.

“Of course, I’m back. Did you think I’d leave? I had to take care of the Dark Lord,” Shadow said, heading towards the shower. He was sweaty and tired.

“What?” the dogman said, shocked at that proclamation.

“He needed to die tonight,” was the answer. “That part of history couldn’t be changed. Well, not in my opinion,” he added, shucking his shirt and throwing it on his bed. “I’m going to shower, then we’ll go talk to my parents.” He grabbed some new clothes, left to the bathroom and started his shower. When he was done, he put on his new clothes and went back to the bedroom. “Let’s go,” he told his godfather.

Sirius fell into step with him and said, “I just wanted to let you know, we talked to James and he’s onboard with leaving.” Well, the man had been before, but he was more onboard now.

“Is he going to tell Dumbledore?”

“No, not after we pointed out a few things to him,” Sirius said, knocking on the Potter’s door.

“Great,” Shadow said, feeling much better about the prospect of them leaving.

Lily answered and rushed out to hug Shadow. “I’m so glad you’re back,” she said, letting him go.

“I had some things to do,” he told her.

Sirius snorted but didn’t say anything. If Shadow didn’t want to tell them, it wasn’t up to him to spill the secrets of the man.

They walked into the room and saw James playing with Harry. The older man looked up and grimaced. “Sorry,” he mumbled. “I was an arse,” he said, looking sheepish.

“It’s alright. I was pushy,” Shadow said, shrugging.

“Where should we go? Lily and I don’t have passports,” James said, looking at Sirius, who shrugged. He had his. He had had to travel with his parents many times. He would have thought the Potters would have done the same. Yet, now that he thought about it they never did leave the country.

“You can go to the embassy of either the United States or Australia, and they will sort it out for you,” Shadow said, knowing the magical side would do that. He didn’t know about the muggle side, but the magical side would.

“I want to go to Australia,” Lily said right away. It had been a dream of hers, all her life, to visit that country. She loved the animals there. Well, perhaps not all of them, but a good many of them. She knew there were some very dangerous animals there, and she’d have to be careful.

“Alright,” James said, not wanting to fight. It didn’t matter to him either way. He could get his money from any Gringotts.

“Now that that is sorted, I’m going to leave,” Shadow said, looking longingly at his mum. He’d love to stay, but if he did, he might not want to leave. Not that he had a family to get back to, but little Harry needed their full attention.

“You’re leaving now?” Lily asked, holding out her hand for him to take.

He took her hand and said, “Yes, I have other Harrys to help and hopefully more Potters.” He really hoped he could save more versions of his parents. He’d have to think about some way to get around James’s willfulness. Then again, every reality is different.

“Are you sure you can’t stay a few days?” James said, getting the feeling that he was the one to chase the man away.

“I can stay for a few hours,” Shadow relented. “I can tell you a bit more about my life at Hogwarts,” he offered, pulling out the pensieve again.

“That would be lovely,” Lily said, leading him back to the bed, where Shadow placed the pensieve in the middle. He was pulling out memories of some of the good times there.

So, they watched all of Shadow’s adventures and James made sure to have an open mind. He didn’t like what he was seeing, when Shadow showed some of the bad times, and was glad that Harry would never have to go through this. Shadow was one hell of a man. He was brave, kind and loyal to all he held dear.

Right before dinner, Shadow told them how to get to the embassy for Australia via the Knight Bus and left.

“I will miss him,” Lily said, picking up a fussy Harry. She was happy that Harry would never be Shadow. There was something about him that she didn’t want her baby to be.

“I just wish he could have stayed,” Sirius said, yawning. It had been an emotional couple of days. He was happy that Shadow had saved him from a life in Azkaban. He shuddered at the thought that he had been so close to going to the vile place. He just couldn’t imagine it.

“I understand why he left,” James said, hanging his head. He was still of the opinion that it was all his fault.

“I don’t think it was you, James. I am sure that he only spends a small amount of time in each reality,” Sirius said, clapping his friend on the back.

“I guess,” James said, looking at his wife to see if she was still mad at him.

“You’re so full of yourself, James,” she spat, giving Harry some teething biscuits. Unlike their muggle counterparts, these had some medicinable purpose to them.  There were potions in them that would numb and promote tooth growth. “Not everything is about you,” she snapped, placing the toddler on her hip and moving towards the door. “Come on,” she said, leaving out the door. She was ready to get the ball rolling.

“Yup, she’s still pissed,” the bespectacled man stated, pushing said glasses up his nose.

“She’ll get over it. She loves you, James,” Sirius said, going after Lily.

“Merlin knows why,” James said to himself. He too followed Lily, making sure he had the key to the door.

Hphphp

They did wind up going to Australia and had a wonderful life there. James sent Dumbledore a letter when they were settled, mailing it from a different country, telling him that they had left and not to go looking for them. Of course, Albus didn’t listen.

Everyone knew that the Dark Lord died on Halloween, but they never found out how. Only that he died in the Potter’s cottage, and that he battled a man who looked like James Potter. Pettigrew must have told someone that much.

The Longbottoms had listened and were never attacked, though the four people that tried were arrested. Many of the Death Eaters were arrested and a good deal of them bought their way out of prison, including Bellatrix Lestrange and her husband, along with his brother. Barty Crouch Jr. was also let go, but his father’s career never recovered.

There were no ‘tests’ in Hogwarts over the years, and Severus Snape was never hired as Potion’s Professor. So, the school was a lot less stressful for a great many students. There was no Triwizard Tournament, therefore there was no great resurrection.

However, the Dark Lord did come back, albeit he came back in a quiet manner and was much weaker. He raged a quiet war with the wizarding world for about five years with his Death Eaters. He met his end at the busy end of Colin Creevey’s wand when he attempted to raid his house. A few Death Eaters also died that night, but most of them got away and just went back to their normal lives.

As for the Potters, they had two more children, and they lived happily ever after in Australia and never saw Dumbledore again. Though they did have Remus and Sirius around, so it was never a quiet time in their home.
