the prettiest eyes i’d ever seen

“Hey, sweetie.”

You wake up to Sofia’s gorgeous face in front of yours, like an angel or an apparition. She lays to your right, propped up on her left elbow on your shared double bed.
Your first thought is how effortlessly beautiful she looks, even with bed hair, her auburn layers falling across her face.
Your second thought is…
“Huh… happy anniversary!”

Suddenly, the sleep pulling at your eyelids and weighing your body down is gone, replaced by ecstatic energy.
Three years of being together, three years of you and Sofia. In love.
You smile contentedly, thinking about your plans for the day spent together to celebrate.

You sit up and turn over to face her, gazing into her adoring eyes as she gazes into yours. She has the prettiest eyes you’ve ever seen. The green reminds you of the apple on the Abbey Road vinyl - the first album you bought together, back when you first moved into this cottage.
She shuffles closer.
You take her face tenderly between your hands and kiss her soft pink lips, your thumbs caressing her freckled dimples. Your lips fit together perfectly, as if in finding her, you found the final piece of the huge puzzle you’d been waiting forever to complete. You move closer together, your lips smoothly and sweetly gliding over each other. This isn’t the first time you’ve done this, or the second, more like the one hundredth, but it never gets old, never gets tired. Kissing Sofia will always be exciting and heavenly.
Once you eventually pull apart, you linger there for a moment, your noses gently grazing against each other, your morning breaths colliding, your eyes reflecting each other’s endless love.
Every moment with her is bliss.

”So…” she whispers, her voice catching in her throat at first, “three years. Three years I’ve put up with you!” she teases playfully, her eyebrows raised.
“Shut up. I love you.” is your reply.
“Damn, you said it before me! Well, I love you more, so…”
You scrunch up your face and shrug, “Well, I said it first, so clearly, I love you more.”

Sofia chuckles in response, shaking her head. “Oh yeah, I made you breakfast! I was thinking of doing waffles, but I went with…” she turns over, picks up a tray from the bedside table, and plonks it in front of you, “pancakes instead!”
The pancakes are neat heart shapes, divided over two plates and finished with icing sugar. Each plate has three pancakes, and there’s little pots with different toppings in: banana; maple syrup; sugar; Nutella; jam; strawberries; blueberries; peaches, and a little squeezey bottle of lemon juice. On each plate there’s two sets of cutlery - two knives, two forks, and two spoons, so the toppings don’t get all mixed up. She knows you’d find that annoying. She knows you’d want to go and get more cutlery. She thought about everything to make this perfect.

“I brought loads of toppings so we could decide which combos to have.” she gestures towards to tray.
“Good call, I’m so indecisive. Thank you, my love. You know me so well.”
“Likewise.” she smiles lovingly, “Gods, where would we be otherwise?”
“Not here, together, in this bed, in our stunning little cottage by the lake, that’s for sure. And there’s nowhere else I’d rather be. Thank the stars you get me. So well.”

You plant a kiss on her forehead, avoiding knocking over the precariously balanced breakfast tray, and quickly get out of the bed to put on Immunity by Clairo on your record player. Before getting back into bed, you adjust the pillows behind you to sit you both up and make this breakfast easier to eat. Sighing happily, you sit back into bed, placing the breakfast tray so it’s perched between your lap and Sofia’s, and tuck in.

What a way to start off your anniversary.
