Chapter 55
Tom was sitting in his office again, glaring at a book in frustration. He still couldn’t figure out how to arrange the ritual to adopt Harry. He had found a ritual that brought two people together, but it was more like a wedding. Unsuitable, obviously, but perhaps he could find a way to combine it with the blood adoption ritual somehow, and it would give Harry scope to be actively involved. How exactly to combine them though – far more difficult and confusing than Tom had hoped for.
‘My Lord?’ came Severus’ voice from the doorway. ‘Do you have a moment?’
Tom sighed and beckoned Severus in. ‘Come in. I’m not getting anywhere right now anyway. A distraction would be welcome.’
Severus took a seat, looking his Lord over. ‘You seem frustrated, my Lord. Anything I can help with?’
Tom shook his head. ‘I’ll work it out eventually. What can I help you with, Severus?’
Severus’ cheeks darkened, making Tom look at him more carefully.
‘A couple of things, my Lord.’ Severus began, licking his lips. ‘Firstly, S- Lord Black has stepped up the timeline a little. I know the plan was to wait for the book to be released before pulling away from the Order. However, their recent behaviour proved to be… intolerable to Lord Black, and he has already set a distance.’
Tom frowned. ‘What happened?’
‘Apparently,’ Severus scowled, ‘Harry’s well-being is not a consideration. They are unconcerned that he is in your grasp, as they believe he is destined to destroy you, and so cannot be killed before you die.’
Tom looked incredulous. ‘That – what – but – But what of anything less than death? What of beatings and torture and – and…’ Tom broke off, breathing heavily.
‘You see why Lord Black was unable to hold his tongue.’ Severus said dryly.
Tom shook his head in disbelief. Then paused. ‘Lord Black? Why the sudden use of his title? I thought you two were rather closer than that?’
Severus flushed a dark red, ears burning. ‘We are. I have accepted a courtship with Sirius.’
Tom gave him a strange look. ‘’Sirius’ again? What is going on, Severus?’
‘Nothing!’ Severus said hastily. ‘Er, it’s – I – ‘
Tom’s expression darkened. ‘Look at me, Severus.’
Severus glanced up obediently, a little frazzled, then realised his mistake a second too late. Tom reached his magic out and entered Severus’ mind, searching for whatever was causing his follower to be so… addled.
‘Please, my Lord – it’s not – ‘
Tom found the threads of emotion he was looking for, following them quickly but carefully, until he was watching the memory of Sirius – definitely looking like Lord Black in that moment – putting Dumbledore in his place. He felt Severus’ surging emotions surrounding him, and followed cautiously. The memory twisted into shape – Severus whispering in Sirius’ ear, and Sirius gripping his shirt, wide eyed and shocked. The flaring lust and desire and excitement was obvious, and Tom held back a smile at the shame and embarrassment he could feel building in Severus in the present. He pulled carefully free of Severus’ mind, and gave him an apologetic look.
‘No need to be embarrassed, Severus. Sirius Black is an attractive man, and the two of you are courting. I was concerned at your behaviour and choice of words, but I can see it is nothing to be concerned over. Clearly Sirius’ more… intense side holds appeal.’
Severus covered his face with his hands, shaking his head. ‘Please stop.’ he mumbled.
Tom cleared his throat. ‘Apologies if I made you uncomfortable. Barty informed me I sound like someone’s dad when I speak about relationship matters. Given my lack of personal interest, I am aware I may come across… awkward.’
Severus snorted, and Tom gave him a half-hearted glare. ‘Sorry, my Lord. I appreciate your concern, however awkward it may be.’
‘Insolent bastard.’ grumbled Tom. ‘Go find something useful to do. Find a tree and carve a heart with SS loves SB. Soppy idiot!’ Tom called the last part out the door as Severus left, and smiled at the surprised bark of laughter from the stoic man.
