Chapter 1
Sirius POV:
This is the story of how I died.
Don’t worry, this is actually a very fun story, and the truth is, it’s not even actually mine.
This is a story of a boy: Remus Lupin.
And it starts with the moon.
Once upon a time, a single drop of moonlight fell to the earth, and from this small drop of moonlight, grew a magic, silver flower.
It had the ability to heal the sick and injured, though that ability came at a cost.
You see, in order to gain health from the flower, you had to sing a very particular song, and, when you sang that song, your life changed forever.
You became a werewolf.
There was one man: Fenrir Greyback, who didn’t care about this, and he believed it just made him stronger, so he used the flower to stay alive for centuries
On a happier note, centuries after the day Greyback began to use the flower, there was a Kingdom, and the Kingdom was ruled by a beloved King and Queen, and the Queen was having a baby.
But she got sick.
Really sick.
She was running out of time, so the King got desperate enough to begin to look for the flower.
Eventually, the King’s guard found the flower and dug it up, using it in a soup to heal the Queen.
Months later, a healthy baby boy, a prince, was born, with a beautiful silver streak in his otherwise hazel hair.
I’ll give you a hint: That’s Remus.
To celebrate his birth, the king and queen launched a flying lantern into the air, and for that one moment, everything was perfect.
That night, Fenrir Greyback came and snatched little baby Remus out of his bed, unbeknownst to anyone.
The kingdom searched and searched, but they could not find the prince, for deep within the Forbidden Forest, in a tower, Greyback raised the child as his own.
Greyback had found his new magic flower, but this time, he was determined to keep it hidden.
Remus POV:
“Why can’t I go outside?” I ask daddy, as he combs through my hair, and I sing the song that ensures he will always be with me.
“The outside world is a dangerous place.” He says, voice soft, “It’s filled with horrible people who will do whatever it takes to get to you. You must stay here, where you’re safe. Do you understand, flower?”
“Yes, daddy.” I reply, though sad, I know that he’s right. The horrible people will come for me for my healing, and then lock me up when they learn that I’m a monster.
That night, when I’m certain that daddy is asleep, I sneak over to my window; the one where I like to sit and watch the outside world.
I’m excited for tonight, because it’s my sixth birthday, and every year on my birthday, thousands and thousands of glowing things are released into the sky. They’re almost like stars, the way that they sparkle and shine, though I know that they’re different, because stars have patterns. Constellations. These only appear one day a year, and that easily makes it my favorite day.
I fall asleep on that window sill, watching the not-stars floating higher and higher, until I can no longer see them.
