Magic Marks
"Harry, you look different today ... kind of stern," Ron remarked, frowning.
Harry's spoon paused in mid-air for a split second.
"Um, yeah. I don't know." He flushed red — and it definitely wasn't due to the Great Hall's room temperature.
Hermione looked up from her book and eyed Harry critically. "Are you ill? You don't look well."
"I'm fine," Harry muttered, pulling the collar of his sweater up a bit.
"A turtleneck?" Neville raised his eyebrows. "In May?"
"Fashionable," Harry snapped.
Neville barely reached into his toast and couldn't reply.
"Fashionable? Yours? This is getting really weird," Hermione said.
"Just shut up, everyone—"
"You can make the marks disappear with a charm. You do know that, right?" The velvety voice came so close to his ear that Harry almost fell off his chair in shock. His heart stopped in that instant.
He turned around so slowly, as if any movement would reveal him.
Draco Malfoy. Casual as ever, his arms crossed in front of his chest. The blond looked at him with an amused smile on his lips.
Harry felt the heat rise in his face even more. And he felt all eyes on them, trying to figure out what was going on.
"What do you—" Ron began sharply, but Draco continued undeterred.
"It's almost cute how you try to hide it. But honestly, Potter, a turtleneck? That's almost a confession."
Harry could only stare, frantically searching his mind for a plausible explanation for his friends.
But Draco was faster. He leaned a little closer. And was now definitely too close for Harry's taste.
"But if you want me to put them somewhere less obvious next time, all you have to do is say so."
Ron sprayed his pumpkin juice across the table. Hermione dropped her cutlery with a clatter onto her plate. Neville choked on his toast.
Draco grinned and turned with a casual movement. "See you later, Potter."
As he strolled off, he left behind a speechless Hermione, a confused-looking Ron, and a coughing Neville, who was being patted on the back by Dean.
And Harry just wished for a giant black hole to swallow him forever.
