Pride and Prejudice: a Jily story
Summary
Jily Pride and Prejudice AUAs news reach of a young wizard, Black, settling into the neighbouring estate of Netherthorne, the witches of Sylvanbourn strive to make his acquaintance.Nobody knows a series of convenient, though unexpected, and controversial, nuptials would spring from such an occasion.Lest of all, the independent Lily and the resolutely cold Mr. Potter. (The text is Austen’s original novel, with name-character-place adjustments).
Note
About the story...- As an avid reader of Jily literature, I have always thought that their dynamic perfectly resembled that of the protagonists of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice: two people who are attracted to each other, without even realizing it, but who can’t at first ignore what they deem to be impossible defects of character.Deciding to pick up Austen’s novel, I thought it would be the easiest thing in the world to replace some names, add some extra definitions here and there, and transform it into James and Lily Potter’s story.- When reading this story, you will be reading Pride and Prejudice. I thought of rewriting the whole thing anew, but then it would have felt as a sort of insult to the author: the study of character and the careful construction of their dynamic cannot so easily be replicated.- Lily Evans and Elizabeth Bennet are spectacularly similar, and in fact they may share the same character. What bothers me, is that James’ and Darcy’s characters are nothing alike. You will feel it while reading, but I found no solution to it, for any correction would have destroyed the basis of the story. Their pureness of heart and impossible devotion to their loved one, however, remain unaltered.- The characters in this story will be magical. I thought to add some details here and there just to prove my point, but the essence itself remains that of a period, social work; not a fantasy. Humans divide themselves by means of titles and jobs, and the best I could do was add blood-status to the mix—an apparently unsurmountable barrier. The meanings of nobleship against workingmen, I have left unaltered, but I think they fit in just well with the blood discourse.- Some characters are taken directly from the Marauders fandom; others, I have decided to invent myself—namely Lily’s sisters (outside from Petunia) and James’ own sister.- If you’ve never read Pride and Prejudice and had been meaning to do so, reading this will be just as good as reading the novel instead.Credits to the two Js: Jane Austen and J.K.R.

The Characters

At Sylvanbourn:

- Mr. Evans; Muggle from the small nobility of Hertfordshire, owns a small estate named Sylvanbourn House. Marries Halfblood Squib Iris Galdwyn in Evans. Entailed estate with 500 Galleons a year.

- Mrs. Iris Evans; Halfblood from an uninfluential wizarding family, not part of the sacred twenty-eight, based in Myrthvale who only owns a small fortune, guarded by her older brother Mr. Galdwyn of Gravechurch Alley, London. Sister of Edward Galdwyn and Mrs. Pettigrew of Myrthvale. A Squib, she can’t produce magic. Eloped with Mr. Bennet in an attempt to revitalize her life, probably drugging him with a low-quality love potion she’d attempted to brew. Was forced to marry him with a 1,000 Galleons dowry and resettle in Hertfordshire, where she gave birth to five daughters she anxiously tries to marry off. Children: Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Catherine and Lydia

- Daisy Evans; firstborn of the Bennet girls, a beautiful girl of twenty-two with blonde hair and sweet, light eyes. She can produce magic and was gifted a wand at twenty. The Bennet girls did not have a governess, so she learnt what she could from old magic books in the Bennet’s reduced library and her spellwork is rough, though effective. Dowry of 200 Galleons.

- Lily Evans; secondborn, a slightly lesser beauty than her sister, more frazzled, with the red hair inherited from her father and unexpectedly green eyes, who nobody in the family has. She too can produce magic, and is more skilled than her sister Daisy. She was just gifted her own wand upon turning twenty, but before that she practiced very hard with Potion-making and is very skilled in that regard. Dowry of 200 Galleons.

- Petunia Evans; thirdborn, Squib. Boney and rather ugly, she is unbearably moralistic, pedantic and is very jealous of her older sisters. She plays the piano better than most, but she insists on accompanying her playing with songs and she has a poor voice. Dowry of 200 Galleons.

- Violet Evans; second youngest, hasn’t yet demonstrated any magical capacity, and the family is worried she might too be a Squib. A pleasant appearance, though not too striking, she is very coquettish. Having tired herself out with her three first daughters, Mrs. Evans has renounced teaching her magic and because of that Violet is growing up rather uneducated. Dowry of 200 Galleons.

- Heather Evans; youngest daughter, and third beauty in the family behind Daisy and Lily. She can produce magic like her older sisters, but Mrs. Evans is not set on teaching her how to govern it.
