Remus quietly made his way up the stairs to the boys dormitories after his Prefect rounds. Slowly opening the door a crack his eyes swept over the room. James and Peter's beds were both quiet and closed but Sirius's was clearly empty. He frowned slightly and pushed the door open, glancing around, eyes locking onto a dim light coming from the bathroom. Heading over he knocked lightly.
"Hey Pads, is everything alright?" There was silence from inside and his frown deepened. Sirius was usually in bed waiting for goodnight kisses when he came back and the silence worried him. He knocked again a bit louder. "Baby are you okay?" There was more silence and he tried the door handle. Locked. He pulled out his wand and tapped the handle. There was a click and the door opened.
Sirius was sprawled on the floor, eyes closed and mouth open slightly, along with far too many empty vials of sleeping draught. Remus gasped and fell to his knees next to him.
"Siri!" He grabbed his shoulders and shook him. He let out a weak groan and his eyelids fluttered open slightly. "Oh Merlin, what have you done?" Remus scooped him up and stood, cradling him close to his chest. Sirius whimpered.
"Rem..." He kicked the dormitory door open and ran down the stairs.
"Shh, it's alright, it's going to be okay." Once he made it through the portrait hole he booked it towards the Hospital Wing startling several ghosts on his way past. Somewhere along the way he started crying but didn't spare a second thought for the tears tracing their way down his cheeks.
When he made it to the hospital wing what felt like far too long later, but couldn't be more than a few minutes, Sirius's head was lolled back and his eyes kept fluttering open and closed. With a well placed kick the door swung open and hit the wall with a bang.
Madame Pomfrey, who was apparently cleaning up one of her shelves, whirled around at the sound wand already out. Her lips pursed as she took in the two boys before her and she gestured to a bed already hurrying over.
"What happened?" Remus set him down gently, nearly passing out in relief when he heard a small whimper come from the boy.
"I... sleeping draught overdose. Found him in the bathroom." She nodded and gently pushed him back.
"Sit, I'll do what I can." He staggered backwards and sank into a nearby chair burying his head in his hands and beginning to cry in earnest, the events of the past few minutes catching up to him in full filling him with utter terror.
After a while when his breathing had mostly evened out he felt a hand on his shoulder and looked up to see Madame Pomfrey watching him.
"Is... is he?" She nodded.
"He'll be okay. He's asleep right now, he'll probably wake up late in the morning." She squeezed his shoulder. "He's very lucky you found him when you did. A few more minutes and I don't know if I could have saved him." He sniffled.
"I left him alone and-" She cut him off firmly.
"What happened isn't your fault. You did the best you could. You can stay the night if you'd like." He nodded. Even if she hadn't offered there was no way he was going to leave.
"Thank you." She released his shoulder and stepped aside.
"Go on." He pulled his chair over to the side of the bed and sat watching Sirius. He looked so fragile laying in the hospital bed, starch white sheets accentuating his too pale skin. He gently took one of his hands in his own and laid his head on the side of the bed.
At some point Remus must have fallen asleep watching the steady rising and falling of his chest because he woke up to a ray of sun directly in his face. He sat up and blinked several times. Curtains had been drawn around the bed creating a private section so it was just Sirius and him in the area.
He went to release Sirius's hand but to his shock he clutched his hand tightly. His eyes fluttered open and met Remus's.
"Siri, baby, oh Merlin." He wiped away a tear. "You're awake." Nodding slightly, Sirius glanced away.
"'M sorry, I..." Remus shook his head.
"No, don't be sorry. You didn't do anything wrong." Sirius sniffled and held out his arms.
"Can I get a hug?" Remus practically threw himself into his arms. Sirius started crying softly.
"Shh, it's alright, you're okay. I've got you, it's alright." He held him tightly to his chest while his tears soaked into his shirt. "It's alright, I've got you."
"'M just so tired."
"Okay, okay. You can sleep as long as you want just please don't-" He choked on his next words. "Please don't try and do that again. I can't lose you." Sirius mumbled something unintelligible into his shirt and Remus pulled back slightly.
"What was that Siri?" Sirius looked down.
"You're... you're not mad?"
"God, no. Of course not baby. I almost lost you and I was scared out of my mind but I could never be mad." Sirius scrubbed a few tears away.
"Can we cuddle?" Remus nodded.
"Of course." He crawled into bed next to Sirius and let him lay partially on top of him with his head on his chest. Murmuring quiet reassurances Remus combed a hand through his hair as he draped his other arm across his waist. After a moment of silence Remus tilted the other boy's chin up so he was looking up at him.
"I want you to know that I love you so, so much. I know sometimes it's hard for you to recognize how much I love you but I never, ever want you to feel like that again. So please, please talk to me. I don't want to lose you." He pressed a gentle kiss on Sirius's forehead and wiped away the fresh tears on his cheeks. He nuzzled into Remus's chest.
"I love you too. And I'm sorry, I know you said not to apologize but... I want to. So I'm sorry. I honestly didn't plan on it I just... I forgot to take the potions and then I found all of them and... I don't know what I was thinking. I just wanted to sleep forever." He tightened his grip on his shirt. "I'm just so tired. I can't sleep and I can't think and I just want to sleep."
"If you want to apologize then I forgive you. We'll talk about the potions later but if you're tired than you can sleep. I'll be right here." Sirius nodded and closed his eyes.
"Sleep is nice." Remus stroked his hair until his breathing evened and he was sleeping peacefully. He'd stay until he woke up. And after that.
