Holy Diver

“That one’s called a European Eel,” Remus said, leaning over the railing of the little boat and staring into the sea. “Oh, and down there, that’s an Arctic charr. And-”

He stopped abruptly when he noticed the way Sirius was staring at him. Not because he didn’t like it, more because he didn’t know how to react. When Sirius looked at him like that, like he was worth listening to, it made all the clever thoughts jumble together into one great collage of Sirius Black.

Remus forced himself to look away, not quite sure what would happen if he looked long enough. It really is amazing, he thought to himself, staring at his rippling reflection. That boy can see past all the scars and the sadness and- wait. My reflection should not be moving like that.

In one swift movement, a scaly hand reaches out of the depths and grabs hold of Remus’s tie, pulling him crashing down into the water.

“Moony!” Is the last thing he hears before the water has seeped into his mind, dimming everything to a deadly, peaceful, dark, dark blue.

You've been down too long in the midnight sea

Sirius knew how to swim. Of course he knew how to swim; as much as he hated it, he was a Black. Before anyone could stop him (and who would? Remus was supposed to be the voice of reason), his shirt and heavy shoes were off and he was diving into the inky sea.

Meanwhile, Remus was sinking- was being dragged- deeper and deeper. Had he been conscious, he would have been painfully aware of the saltwater stinging his scars, but he was not. Had he been conscious, he would have seen the pale creature with soft black floating around its determined face approaching.

Something is coming for you, look out

If Remus Lupin had been conscious, he would have known that Sirius Black was slowly, slowly, pulling him towards the surface of the sea. He would have smiled weakly at Sirius as he coughed water onto the dripping deck of the boat.

Remus only had the chance to thank Sirius a few hours later, when he finally did come to. He was below decks, wrapped in a blanket, and his hair had become a tangled mess of mostly-dry fluff. Sirius was sitting in a chair across from him, watching him intently.

“How long have you been sitting there?” Remus asked with a yawn.

“Whole time you’ve been out.” Sirius got up from the chair, elegantly stretching his legs out before sitting down with Remus. “Don’t you ever do that again, you tosser. You almost got us both killed.”

“You didn’t… you went in after me!”

“Of course. What, you think I was just going to let my boyfriend drown?”

“No, but…” Remus looked down. “You didn’t have to save me.”

Sirius grabbed Remus’s face in both hands, his grip firm but his voice shaking. "You absolute nightmare of a human being," he muttered. "You scared the hell out of me."

Remus blinked, still groggy. "Sorry?"

"Shut up," Sirius said, and kissed him- quick, desperate, like he couldn’t decide if he wanted to yell at Remus or never let go of him again.
