It’s the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine)

Sirius Black had always thought that the end of the world would come loudly, like a raging mother or a Led Zeppelin album. It didn’t. It started with the stars going out. The world was ending.

They were seated in James’s back garden, watching the inevitable.

“We’re gone already,” Regulus said, his head resting on James’s shoulder but his hand pointing to the black spaces in the sky where Regulus and Sirius had previously shone.

“Soon it’ll only be me left,” Remus said. It came out slightly muffled, as he was curled up into Sirius. “And then the moon will explode too and we’ll all be gone.”

“Is that really what’s going to happen?” Peter asked, sadly. Xenophilius, sitting by Peter’s feet, nodded, disturbing the braids that Peter had been anxiously weaving as the six friends watched the stars disappear from the sky. A few sparkling glass beads fell out of Xenophilius’s hair and scattered onto the lawn like fallen stars. Nobody bothered picking them up.

There were only a handful left now. Just a few pinpricks of light and a white unblinking eye amidst the vast emptiness. A million unanswered questions hung between the six of them. Most of them would never be answered. The world was ending.

“If the world’s ending, I’m glad I’m with you for it.” Sirius whispered into Remus’s curly hair.

“I don’t think the world is ending,” Remus muttered back.

“No?”

“Nope. You’re my world, and we’re both here, aren’t we? I think that’s enough.”

It's the end of the world as we know it

and I feel fine

“I guess we are,” Sirius answered at last, when there were only two moons left; the one in the sky and the one in his lap. He glanced around at these people he had known for years- his best friends, his brother, his Moony. His Moony who was always right. His moon, his world, his everything, his enough. “I guess it is.”
