Chapter 1
Mori shifts again, he had been sitting here for hours, or it had felt like it had been hours at this point, faking his confusion and shock as he listened to this angry man attempt to explain that magic is real, he clearly didn’t want to be here, and he was already suspicious of Mori, even if he hadn’t seen the boy he was here for yet. Mori sighed and stood up, “I’m going to get Osamu..”
The man takes a deep breath, softly sighing in what Mori couldn’t tell if it was anger or relief as he walked away, walking into the bedroom he had initially given to Dazai when he first came into his care. “Osamu, there’s a man from some magician school here to talk to you.”
Dazai looks at Mori, adjusting his shirt collar and fixing his tie as he stood up, glancing into the mirror to make sure his bandages were all in place. “Took you long enough…” He elbows Mori’s thigh and heads into the living room, his eyes looking over the man standing in the middle of the room.
“I am the potions teacher at Hogwarts–a school for witchcraft and wizardry. Severus Snape, Mr. Dazai.” he turns so he now faces Dazai. He was small, or at least small to the other children his age.
Dazai stares up at him for a few moments, Mori had told him to play dumb and lie low, and the man in front of him had introduced himself with his first name coming first, even though his Japanese seemed to be quite good, but he could easily ignore it since the man was very clearly a foreigner. He glanced back, seeing Mori enter, it was time for the next part of Mori’s plan. “Where’s this Hogwarts place?”
Snape looks down at Dazai, “I cannot share that. You will come to London with me, we will get your school supplies in Diagon Alley, then we will get on a train that will take us to the school.” Mori stops beside Dazai and places his hand on his shoulder.. “And he’s already accepted?”
Snape nods, watching the slight disdain on Dazai’s face as Mori had put his hand on him, “Yes, and we are expected to go day.” Mori nods. “I suppose he can go then.”
Ten minutes had passed before it had been time for Dazai to leave, but it was stopped the moment Snape had mentioned that Dazai was able to take a pet with him to school. Mori had already known, but he had to pretend he didn’t. “A pet?” Snape nods, “An owl, cat, or toad.”
Mori nods and pauses before looking at Dazai, “A bird would be best, hm? You’ll be able to write home that way.”
Dazai rolls his eyes, stuffing money into his pocket as he was led out by Snape, “Bye, Rintarou.” Mori smirks, Dazai actually called him something other than Mori out of endearment. “Goodbye, Osamu.” Dazai cringes, quickly driving his attention back to Snape instead of Mori.
Dazai had arrived in London with Snape quicker than he cared to notice, he was being dragged through some bar by the time he realized, which he only did because he heard everyone around him speaking in English. “Where are we going now?” Snape pauses and looks down at Dazai, having just brought him through the door. “We’re exchanging your money for money you can use here.” He had let Snape drag him along to the bank he had addressed as “Gringotts,’ Dazai had spent the whole walk and wait looking around, his eyes catching on a few cats, along with the wand shop, he was soon standing in front of a Goblin…
Snape reached into Dazai’s pocket and pulled out the money he had brought along, pushing it to the Goblin before he had reached back into Dazai’s pocket and pulled out a dagger. “You won’t be needing this at Hogwarts.” Dazai huffed and rested against the desk, shoving the money he was given into his pocket before following Snape out of the bank. “What do we need to buy?” Snape pulls a parchment out of his pocket and glances at before glancing at Dazai, the boy hadn’t paid the slightest bit of attention during the walk to Gringotts, he should even be trusting him to go off alone, but it’d save a large amount of time if he did. “Give me your clothing sizes, then you’ll go to Olivander’s, before getting a pet if you please.”
Dazai nods, rattling off his clothing sizes and leaving Snape the second he was allowed to, he walked down the street silently, this time paying much more attention to his surroundings before finally stopping in front of Olivander’s. He honestly hadn’t the slightest clue of what Mori had been thinking, how was he supposed to perform magic with No Longer Human… HE eventually gave up and walked into the store, watching a man on one of those sliding ladders you really only see in movies slide over to him and tosses a wand at him, which he quickly caught out of the disinterest in getting his eye poked out.
“Give it a wave!” The man, who Dazai assumed to be Olivander since he couldn’t care to think about it, exclaimed from the ladder, so Dazai did, he gave the wand a wave, nothing happened, not that it surprised him, but it certainly seemed to surprise Olivander, who tossed him a new wand almost immediately. “Try this one.”
That had ended up being a loop for nearly an hour until a wand that finally did the slightest bit of magic had come along and Olivander immediately sold it to Dazai.
By the time Dazai had actually left Olivander’s, Snape was standing there waiting, just silently standing there. “It took you that long to find a wand…?” He had already been suspicious of the boy, but taking nearly an hour to get a wand was strange, too strange…
“I’m not done yet, I want a cat..” Dazai shoves the wand into the pocket of his coat and followed Snape who led him to a pet store, and he soon left with a fluffy white cat, small enough to sit on his shoulder.. “What now?” Snape looks down at him, “We go to the train station and go to Platform 9 ¾.” Dazai nods, he didn’t bother questioning it, he had already read about the platform in the research Mori had made him do..
Snape soon dropped him off at the train station with his belongings and he was left to find his way from there, he soon spotted a large group of people with red hair and he followed them, mostly because he saw one of them had a toad, another had a rat, and one of them had a wand visible on the pile of his stuff, so he headed over to them all and began following close behind. They had all soon reached the platform and Dazai stepped forward, making his way to the wall and walking through it without a second thought. And those gingers soon passed through as well, the woman in specific walking over to him. “Oh, you’re all alone, dear, you must be lonely. Ron!! Come keep this boy company!”
Dazai stares up at her with wide eyes, he was supposed to sit alone on the train, he had planned it out.. “I don’t need someone to keep me company, I’m perfectly fine on my own.”
The two older boys walked over too… By the time the train had left, Dazai had been unwillingly adopted by these gingers. He sat with them the whole train ride, though he did sleep through most of it, he had made sure of it.
The train soon came to a stop and everyone was boarded off and led to boats by a giant man, it was dark out by now, everyone’s luggage out in the hallway in piles, and a large group of first years gathered on the stairs outside the great hall, dressed in black robes as they chattered, which soon came to a stop as an older woman spoke, standing about 2 meters away from the doors. ‘Welcome to Hogwarts. Now, in a few moments you will pass through these doors and join your upperclassmen, but before you can take your seats, you must be sorted into your houses–There are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin.” The two words being said in a tone of disdain before she continued. “Now, while you’re here, your house will be like your family. Your triumphs will earn you points, any rule breaking and you’ll lose points. Come the end of the year, the house with the most points is awarded the house cup-”
A toad croaks. “Trevor!” A boy runs forward from the crown, picking up the toad from the ground before looking up at the woman and immediately backing into the crowd once more. “Sorry..”
“The sorting will begin momentarily,” She walks into the great hall, the large doors slamming shut behind her as chatter begins once more. Minutes had passed and she finally walked out, lightly hitting a boy with blonde hair over the head with a scroll. “You may all enter now.”
All of the first years soon stood at the front of the great hall, their upperclassmen sitting at long tables behind them all as the woman came up to the front, standing in front of a long table with what was assumed to be school staff. “Now, when I call your name, you shall come forth, I will place the sorting hat atop your head, and you will be sorted into your houses.” She then pulled the scroll open and held it in front of her face. “Hermione Granger.” A girl with frizzy hair stepped forward, mumbling to herself as she walked forward. Ron turned to Dazai, “Mental that one, I’m telling ‘ya.” She made it to the chair and sat down, the hat now placed atop her head. “Ahh.. right then, mmm, right, okay. GRYFFINDOR!” Cheers erupted from the crowd, specifically the table assumed to be Gryffindor and she quickly stood up and headed to it.
The sorting soon came to the last person, Dazai, he honestly hadn’t noticed he was the final one standing, and he tensed up as his name was called out unexpectedly, pulling him from his state of distraction. He quickly made his way up and the hat was placed on his head… it had seemed to have died, it went limp, almost as if it was a normal hat. The whale hall was silent and Minerva hesitantly picked it back up off Dazai’s head, it had immediately come back and shouted “SLYTHERIN!”
Nobody cheered, nobody made a sound, the hat had been around for hundreds of years and this had never happened…Dazai was quickly urged out of the seat and she led him to Slytherin’s table. He had lost track of what happened after that, all he cared to remember was that he ate, he ate very little, then he sat quietly, waiting for the next thing to happen.
Dinner soon ended and the prefects began leading the new students to the dorms, explaining that the stairs changed quite often and that the dormitories needed a password to get inside. Dazai headed to the boys’ dormitory the second he could and found his luggage beside a bed, along with the still unnamed cat curled up on his bed.
More boys began to enter the dormitory seeing Dazai sitting on the bed and writing a letter, he ended up only filling one page before he stopped and began changing into pajamas.
“Going to bed already, tiny?” Dazai looked to whoever was beside him, it was the blonde boy that had been hit with the scroll earlier. “Yes, I am.” Dazai then turned around and got into bed, the cat curling up beside his head. “I’m Malfoy, Draco Malfoy.” Dazai shifts, looking at the blonde boy once again. “...Dazai Osamu.”
Dazai woke up in the morning, much to his disdain, and he headed to breakfast. There was nothing he could bring himself to eat, nothing like what he ate in Japan, not that he exactly ate much in Japan either, but he couldn’t bring himself to even take a small bite, one the the Ravenclaws–whose table is right beside Slytherin’s–even made him a small plate, not that he even considered touching it, though he did drink a small bit of tea. The food didn’t look bad, it just didn’t look good, nor did it smell very good. He soon was the only one left in the great hall besides a few staff, yet he continued to sit in place and stare down at his place.. He wouldn’t eat it, but Mori would probably say it’s wasteful, and that would possibly get him in trouble, Mori said he needed to lie low, which meant avoiding getting in trouble.. So he continued to stare, still not touching his food or the remainder of his tea. He eventually sighed and sucked it up, eating the whole place and leaving it on the table as he rushed to get to his first class.
“Mr. Dazai, are you even paying attention?” Snape’s voice rang through his head, Draco in the seat beside him, he felt nauseous, his stomach couldn’t handle the sudden change in foods, Mori hadn’t prepared him for this in the slightest. He had lost track of what happened for two minutes before he finally looked up, Snape was beside him, there was vomit on the floor, it smelled foul, and it was the only thing his nose could take in, he could hear everyone talking, but his ears were only focusing on Snape, his hand rubbing Dazai’s back, he had seemed so cold when they had first met just yesterday..
He looked up at Snape then down at his uniform, it was covered in vomit, he then looked back at Snape.. “I’m fine, I have a weak stomach…the change of foods was a bit too much for me…” Snape sighs then stands up and looks at Draco. “Take Mr. Dazai to the infirmary, return to class once you’ve taken him.” Snape looks down at Dazai, “I’ll tell the rest of your teachers you won’t be coming to classes for the rest of the day possibly.”
Draco left Dazai in the infirmary with a woman named “Madame Pomfrey” then headed back to class. She brought Dazai a clean uniform and he put it on then took a nap, he ended up not waking up until dinner came, Mori would be pissed if he knew, not that Dazai had to exactly tell him the truth in the letter.
Pomfrey walked him to the great hall then left, though she did watch as he walked to the Slytherin tables and sat down before leaving. He ended up not eating dinner at all, this time the plates had already been made, and he spent the whole time staring at the plate, everyone had left again, this time the teachers and staff remained, and McGonagall walked over to him. “You aren’t eating?”
Dazai looks up at her, “I’m not used to food like this.. I don’t exactly live in any of the countries near Britain, the change in food was too much for my stomach this morning.” She nods, “We’ll just have to find something for you to eat then.” He was eventually presented with ramen, not that he exactly liked ramen, but there wasn’t much time as curfew was soon coming, and there also wasn’t many options on what could be made, so he ate it and was walked to Slytherin’s dormitory by Minerva.
