Platform 9 3/4
The Evans family arrived at Kings Cross Station, on the first day of September. The oldest of the three girls was walking by their mother with a frown, whilst Lily was walking by their dad. Violet had taken to sitting on the trunk as her father was pushing the trolly everything was on, the youngest daughter was holding Lily’s train ticket, frowning as she turned it off to see if there were any directions to the platform they needed.
“Are we even sure this is a real platform? Like I’ve never heard of Platform 9 ¾ before.” Violet said, giving up putting the ticket back inside her sister bag.
“The ticket doesn’t explain how to find it?” Lily asked with a small frown, as Vi shook her head.
“Well, from what we have learnt the wizarding world seems to be kept a secret from normal people like us, so it may be hidden behind some form of magic.” Mr. Evans said.
“You think they would, you know, help us find it at least.” Vi grumbled lightly, but she was glancing around, the station was very full. But she grinned, “But look, someone has an owl.” She pointed, the family noticed to where their daughter was pointing and followed the other group who had an owl with their luggage. Where they watched them run at the pillar between platforms 9 and 10 – and vanishing. Vi gasped excitedly, Lily rolled her eyes softly but couldn’t help but smile too.
“Well, we found our platform.” Lily grinned, Violet hopped off the trolly so Lily could push it through, Violet frowned lightly but her dad took her hand.
“Ready Vi?” He asked, she nodded nervously and ran at the pillar. The world went black, before bursting into light again. Violet stumbled when she reached the other side, but this side of the pillar was just as busy if not busier, and she was quickly knocked a few times as people were hurrying by with trolly and bags – until she landed against something – which turned to be someone as they helped her steady herself.
“Are you okay?” She looked up to see a boy her sisters age with messy black hair and stormy grey eyes.
“Yeah, thanks, sorry for bumping into you. This place is so busy…” Vi frowned looking around. “And I’ve lost my parents…”
“Ah, are you new to Hogwarts?” he asked.
“Oh, no, my sister, she is the first witch in our family, but first time here…” Violet explained.
“Aha, say no more, completely understand.” The boy grinned; he held out his hand. “So, may I help you find your family, dear fallen maiden?” Vi snorted but accepted his hand.
“That was so corny, but sure.” Vi grinned. “Oh, I’ve Violet by the way. Violet Evans.”
“Nice to meet you Violet Evans, I’m Sirius Black. Yep, everyone in my family has some name based on a constellation, and yes - its more annoying than it sounds.” The boy sighed as hey weaved through the crowds. Violet watched him for a moment as she decided on a reply, she smiled at him softly.
“Well, I think Sirius is a wonderful name. It is what you make of it, after all.” Violet said. “Like my parents, I have two sisters, we are all named after a flower. They did it so they hopped we’d grow well.” Violet smiled. “Dad now says I should have been Rose with how thorny I can be! Which is my middle name, so I guess they had some inclination about me.”
“See that’s sweet, my parents do it cause imagine the horror of not following the pure blood family traditions set hundreds of years ago. It’s a bit outdated.” Sirius sighed, causing her to laugh again.
“It does seem a bit old fashioned. Everyone knows old-old traditions are usual stupid any away” She agreed, Sirius Black grinned at her, thrilled to find a kindred spirit. “Oh, hey, Lily!” She waved her free hand. Lily gasped, rushing over, and pulling Violet into a hug, causing the younger girl to let go of Sirius’ hand, Sirius just grinned at the sister’s reunion.
“You’re okay. Dad was so worried when he lost you…” Lily frowned at Sirius, who did say a word but had a small smile. “And, who are you?”
“Oh, this is Sirius Black, he helped me find my way.” Violet beamed.
“I’m a first year too, nice to meet you.” Sirius gave her a small smile.
“I got myself a wizard pen pal for this year!” Violet cheered, before looking at Sirius. “If it’s okay with you?”
“Oh sure, that would be amazing…” He was cut off by the train whistle. “Ah, we need to hurry, the train will be leaving shortly. I’ll send an owl later.” Sirius beamed and ran off towards the train.
“I can’t take my eyes off you for a second, you’d make friends with everyone.” Lily looked at her with a proud smile. “Right, let’s get you back to Mom and Dad and then I’ll need to get the train.” Lily took her hand.
“’Kay!” Vi beamed happily following her older sister.
Violet smiled softly, as she stood next to her parents, waving to Lily as she waved back from the window of the train as it set off. Her hand lowered lightly as the last carriage left the station, ignoring the large group of people beginning to leave.
“Are you okay Violet?” Her mother asked softly, putting a hand on her shoulder.
“Yeah, I just miss Lily.” Violet admitted, the loneliness already settling in.
“Lily will be home in no time.” Her father added, Violet knew they were trying to conform her.
~*~*~*~
After dinner, Violet sat at the desk in her room, doodling on some paper, normally she and Lily would be doing something together as Petunia would be preparing for when she started school -and she just wasn’t as close to Petunia as Lily, especially after Petunia had begun to bully Lily for being a Witch. She sighed, resting her head in her arms. She was bored, now knowing there was a whole ‘nother world out there filled with magic – and mostly likely dragons, which she was super jealous of Lily of – life as a normal person just felt, underwhelming. She jumped when there was a knock on the window, and Vi found a lovely black owl waiting patiently. She hurriedly opened the window, and the bird flew into her room, landing on the frame of her bed, hooting softly.
“Whoa…” Violet gasped, noticing the letter on its leg and carefully took it. The owl ruffled its feathers lightly. “Sirius did say he’d send me an owl…” Vi blushed happily and hurried to her desk and opened up the letter.
Violet Evans,
Hope this letter didn’t startle you too much, didn’t know if you knew wizards use Owls to send post. I don’t know how to muggle post, so you’ll have to teach me sometime!
Anyway, the start of the year at Hogwarts always starts with a huge feast and we are sorted into Houses. I am officially a Gryffindor – my parents are going to go nuts. They’re all Slytherin’s and goodness me, I have broken that family tradition, so sad. Vi snorted, already hearing is sarcastic tone I’m assuming Lily will be sending you a letter about what house she is in, so I’ll let her tell you. But not sure she is too fond of me now, it got super complicated on the friend, but hey, I have few more friends in my life now. Which is a first. Vi frowned, wondering what his family was like. From the sounds of it they had some super weird family traditions, and he did not like it. Either way, hope we can still be friends even if your sister hates me.
Have a nice night, Sirius Black.
Vi smiled softly, listening out to see how long dinner would be, but it sounded like her parents were still cooking, so she grabbed a pen and paper and began to write.
Sirius,
Sounds like your family is a piece of work, at least you get some time away from them at Hogwarts. And about my sister, if it has anything to do with Snape, I am not a huge fan of him either. I don’t know, I get a bad feeling when around him, kinda hard to explain. But I would love to be friends, just cause you and my sister ain’t friends don’t mean we can’t be. And I’ll introduce you to a bunch of cool Muggle world things! Maybe we can hang out when Summer comes around and I can show you stuff in person, which would be so cool!
A feast sound super cool! But looked like there were hundreds of Students, who cooked all the food, sounds like it would be a ton of work. I can’t wait to hear about your first day, Have fun and night!
Violet,
P.S. what’s the owl’s name?
Vi smiled happily and giggled, she turned to the Owl. Who hooted softly, she reached out slowly, and it let her pet it. “You are so pretty; can you take this to Sirius for me?” Violet asked, the owl hooted again, carefully taking the letter in its beak before flying out of the window. “Man, I want a pet owl.” She pouted softly.
“Vi Dinner!” Her father called.
“Coming!” She called back and headed out of her room to join her family for dinner.
