A Harrowing Rescue

Izuku Midoriya peers out of a window in the classroom, lazily waiting for the bell to dismiss him. In the distance he sees a figure standing on the rooftop of a nearby building, looking intently at the school. His bright orange mask boldly contrasting with the black cloak covering his body and the dark clouds behind him. Midoriya gets snapped out of his thoughts by the harsh ringing of the bell.

Midoriya funneled himself out of the crowds in the school building just in time to see the man he saw on the rooftop greet another figure beside him with a slight bow. Izuku feels a shoulder push into his side causing him to stumble slightly.

”Oh sorry, I was looking behind me and I didn’t see you.”

”You’re okay, happens a lot…”

”If you say so. My name is Uchiha Sasuke.”

”Nice to meet you, I’m Izuku Midoriya.”

”Aren’t you trying to go to UA as well?”

“Uhh… yeah. I know I’m not gonna make the hero course so I’m just going to try to make the support course.”

”Alright. Good luck with that.”

”Thanks. I have to go, see you around.” Midoriya responds to the black-haired boy before walking away.

The trek through the city starts uneventful before hearing a deep, guttural scream from an alleyway. Midoriya turns the corner to see a purple-haired individual cornered by what appears to be a person with a sludge engulfing their body. The sludge-user briefly locks eyes with Midoriya before he gets pulled into what appears to be a hole in space followed by the orange mask he saw on the rooftop earlier.

“What the…?”

”You saw that too? They just disappeared, like they got pulled into a black hole.”

Izuku opens his mouth to speak before he is startled by the sudden arrival of another figure - a tall, well built man with long, white hair and markings on his cheeks. “I heard screaming and what sounded like a fight, what happened?”

“Are you a hero?”

”Yeah. My name is Jiraiya, the Toad Sage.”

”No way! I can’t believe I’m meeting the Toad Sage!”

”Fanboy later kid, we’ve got stuff to do.”

”I was attacked by a person with a sludge-based quirk and some guy in an orange mask and a cloak grabbed him and the both disappeared.”

”Okay, did his cloak have any patterns or any distinctive features?”

”I think it did but I couldn’t tell for sure.”

”I saw him while I was in school, the masked man. The mask had one hole at eye level with swirls starting at the eye hole. His cloak had red spots, kinda looked like clouds.”

Jiraiya grabs his phone out of his pocket and looks intently for a moment before showing a picture of a similar cloak to the boys. “Did it look like this?”

“Yes.”

”Good to know. So you had a run in with a man in a criminal organization called the Akatsuki. Heroes and authorities know some of their members but we don’t have a ton of information, everything helps. I wonder what they wanted with you.”

”I don’t either. If they all have quirks or that high level mine wouldn’t be worth it.”

”Yeah, a lot of them are users of very strong quirks. Some just know how to use their advantages well. Someone like Sasori falls into the latter category, Puppet Master isn’t inherently that powerful, but he’s dangerous. Then there’s guys like Kisame and Itachi with very dangerous abilities. I don’t think we have any information on the masked man, but now we know about his ability to disappear in some capacity.”

”Itachi?” The purple-haired boy asks Jiraiya.

”Some call him the Clan Killer. A former up-and-coming hero. The Uchiha clan he came from is known for their clan-wide quirk known as the Sharingan, a special quirk in the eyes. He had the powers of Amaterasu - a never-ending black flame that burns until the target is ash - and Tsukuyomi - A visual illusion he has complete control over and everything felt in the illusion is felt in real life. He turned to a villain after killing everybody in his clan except his own brother, Sasuke.”

”Oh, I met Sasuke earlier. I couldn’t imagine how he feels about his brother.”

”Betrayal like that hurts. I haven’t had anything to that extent but I still remember when Orochimaru defected. He got caught performing inhumane human experiments trying to spur on certain quirk factors in kids. Anyways you two should get to a police station and make a report. I’d love to talk more but I need to do more work taking the Akatsuki down. Stay safe kids!”

“Thank you Jiraiya!” Midoriya shouts into the distance as the Toad Sage leaves into the open area of the city.

****************

”Hey kid, what are you doing here?”

”Jiraiya told me to come and make a report.”

”Okay, what’s your name?”

”Hitoshi Shinso.”

”Alright. I promise you’re not in trouble, but please just step into that room.” The man sitting at the front desk said while pointing to an empty room. “Detective Tsukauchi will be in shortly.”

”Thank you.”

Shinso carries his backpack with him into the empty room and takes a seat on one of the cool metal chairs in the room. After pulling his phone out of his pocket, he starts typing out a message to his foster mother until he hears footsteps followed by the door closing.

“You’re Shinso, right?”

”Yeah.”

”Okay. I’m detective Tsukauchi. My quirk is Human Lie Detector. I was told that Jiraiya sent you here. Is that correct?”

”Yes” (True)

“Why?”

”I got attacked by a villain with a sludge quirk.” (True)

”Normally Jiraiya just calls the police after he deals with the villain. What’s so special about this case?”

”Some guy in an orange mask with a cloak appeared, grabbed the villain, and disappeared. Jiraiya said the guy was probably part of some group called the Akatsuki.” (True)

“Akatsuki, huh? Wonder why they crawled out of the woodwork for this. Can you tell me anything about the masked man’s quirk?”

“When he disappeared, it looked like a hole with a spiral coming out of it. Almost seemed like a mini black hole.” (True)

”Okay. Thank you for the help, you’re free to go now.”

”Thanks.”
