“So what did you think?” Evan asked as they stepped out from the theatre onto the wet concrete, littered with puddles from the rain, the red glowing Hadestown sign reflecting off of the water. It was a stupid question really, after all Barty still had tears in his eyes and Evan is sure he gasped the loudest gasp possible when Orpheus had turned around. Still It felt appropriate to ask.
Barty opened his mouth to respond but nothing came out, instead he just squealed and flapped his hands excitedly.
Evan's smile split into a grin “Told you you'd like it.” He sighed, Barty nodded enthusiastically and Evan took his hand.
“I'm never gonna try and get out of seeing something with you again.” Barty finally said, burying his head in Evans scarf.
“Hades and Persephone kinda reminded me of us.”
Evan scoffed, “I reminded you of the slavery-using-wife-kidnapping capitalist king of the dead?” He asked coyly.
Barty shrugged, smacking his lips. “Maybe…” he cooed, “You have his eyes.”
Evan laughed, “I guess…hey what did you think of Orpheus? Kinda dumb right?”
Barty recoiled, “Uh! Nu-Uh!” He protested.
Evan raised an eyebrow, “you don't think he's dumb…he looked back didn't he? That was his only job.”
Barty shook his head “no no…Rosie you don't get it! He was in love!” He cried, jumping into a puddle and spinning on his heel.
Evan rolled his eyes. “Still dumb.”
Barty sighed, pausing for a moment. “Y'know…” he started and Evan groaned, he had that look in his eyes.
“I bet you can't walk all the way back to the hotel room with me behind you without looking back.”
Evan didn't hesitate. “Bet.” He said, crossing his arms.
Barty grinned, “great! Go ahead.” He gestured ahead. Evan stuck out his tongue, stepping in front of Barty and reaching for his hand. He heard Barty scoff, “Hey hey. No cheating. Remember ‘you won't be hand in hand’” he quoted.
Evan chuckled and dropped Barty's hand, walking ahead of him. "Fine, fine," he said, trying to sound nonchalant. "I'll play by the rules."
Barty followed behind him, or so he hoped. The occasional sound of humming or boots jumping into puddles kept Evan sure he was there. Although after a moment he couldn't deny he was feeling an urge to turn around…he wouldn't do it…It's just he had the urge.
Barty stopped humming, probably realizing he was clueing Evan in about his location.
He could still hear his footsteps through the speeding cars and light downfall of rain but holy shit was his anxiety starting to play up.
He knows Barty isn't the most focused or responsible person…what if he had randomly stopped to challenge some homeless guy's religious beliefs? Or ran onto the road or something?? Honestly with him nothings off the table. Suddenly he heard a bang.
He couldn't help himself, he immediately turned around, quickly regretting his choices as he saw the metal trash can some dude had just knocked over. Barty was walking behind him, eyes on the cars, he looked cute, his fluffy brown hair tousled by the wind and rain, hands in his coat. Suddenly his gaze flickered to Evans and his face immediately broke out into a grin, he burst into a cackle.
“You did it!” He exclaimed “I told you! I told you you'd do it!”
Evan let out a shaky breath, trying to calm his racing heart. “You got me…” he muttered reluctantly.
Barty laughed again, “I guess I'm just too distracting!” He snickered.
Evan rolled his eyes, a small smile playing on his lips. “Well to be fair last time I took my eyes off you you jumped out a window.”
Barty tutted, linking their hands once again, “Come on that was one time.”
Barty leaned into his shoulder “oh come on you love it.”
Evan sighed. “You've got me there.”
