Ruby Summons Weiss

Ruby didn't believe in soul mates. They were too easy, too simple. Surely love didn't boil down to some deterministic bond that you had no say in. It was a choice. It had to be a choice. That was what she told herself as she thumbed through the pages of the old dusty tome hidden away in a secret hatch under her parents' bed.

Sure she'd always loved fairy tales, the knight slaying the dragon and wooing the princess and all that, but soul mates? That was a little far fetched for her. Her parents swore by it, obviously. Claimed they were soul mates brought together by a summoning spell. Sure. That's why they always deflected with a simple 'when you're older' when she asked. Well, she was older. And she found this book. If their story was true, this would be the way to prove it. And she'd prove that soul mates were nonsense. Whoever this ritual summoned, Ruby was determined not to like them.

She pushed all the furniture in her room to the edges as best she could. She didn't necessarily need the space, but what if the person it summoned was huge? Like a giant or something? Giants didn't exist, but neither did spells as far as she knew so she wasn't gonna cast the option aside.

Flipping through the book she found a multitude of spells that caught her attention. She quickly realized that all of them were rather mundane, but seemed very practical none the less, like a spell to control the length of one's hair, or another spell to make sure meat is cooked to just the right temperature.

Finally she landed on the one she was seeking. The spell to summon her soul mate. She took a deep breath, bracing herself for what would surely be stringent and difficult requirements. Complicated processes, insane material requirements, a bizarre overcomplicated summoning circle. Her head was spinning just imagining it. She glanced down at the page. It was just a single line of text. A simple incantation, even if she didn't think she could pronounce any of the words. She gave it her best attempt.

Where she had expected a blinding flash of light, an ear splitting noise, any indication at all that it had worked there was none. She simply blinked, and lying there on the floor was a girl. Okay. Odd, but not THAT odd. She looked human at least, so that was good.

Ruby crept in closer examining the new arrival. She was short, and thin, and so... peaceful. Long white hair flowed to her mid back, a small scar ran across her left eye. She was dressed in a simple blue nightgown. Ruby realized that she looked so peaceful because she was asleep. Which made sense, it was late at night, the only time she could be sure she wouldn't be caught with the spell book. She crept a little closer, leaving the book aside for now. The girl was truly beautiful Ruby thought. It was a shame she'd simply never get along with her on principle. As much as she'd like to. She had brilliant blue eyes, as pale as ice. Wait a minute. Her eyes were open?

"Who are you and why are you in my room?!" Ruby tumbled back, her eyes going wide. She clutched a hand to her chest as she struggled to regain her composure, to slow her racing heart.

"This is my room!" She countered lamely.

The girl sat up and rubbed her eyes, blinking heavily trying to get rid of the remnants of sleep. She looked around, only to discover that she was in fact in Ruby's room.

"Where am I?!"

"In my room." Ruby said, perhaps even more lamely than before.

"So you've said. What I meant was, how am I here, and why? And who are you anyway?"

"I summoned you. Because you're my soul mate! I'm Ruby! Or- Ruby Rose!" She replied enthusiastically, becoming more on board with the idea of soul mates by the minute. The white haired girl was very pretty after all.

"What does that even mean?! You summoned me??"

"Yeah! I cast a spell to summon my soul mate and here you are!" Ruby scrambled over to grab the book to prove what she was saying.

She held it up showing the girl eagerly, a big smile plastered on her face. Honestly, the girl was being a little prickly, and Ruby had started out determined to dislike her, but her surprise at the spell actually working, and the knowledge that it was how her parents had met filled her with no small amount of excitement.

The girl scanned the text before her, her eyes darting back and forth rapidly. When she finished she looked up at the still grinning Ruby, she raised an eyebrow.

"And you think I'm your soul mate?"

"Well, the spell summons your soul mate, and you're here, so... yes?"

"And I'm supposed to just... believe that? It's far more likely that you kidnapped me, even with all the security in the manor, than magic being real and us being bound by fate."

Ruby's brow furrowed. She didn't like being accused of being a kidnapper. The other girl living in a manor also stuck out. Maybe she was famous or something. Only one way to find out really.

"What's your name anyway?" The girl looked momentarily taken aback, but quickly schooled her expression. Clearly a practiced response, likely from years spent in high society.

"Weiss, Weiss Schnee." She extended a hand for a shake. Another practiced hammered in response.

Ruby took her hand and shook it tentatively. Weiss had remarkably soft hands. Ruby just prayed she couldn't tell how fast her heart was racing.

"That's a pretty name."

"You're telling me you didn't know?"

"Should I have known?"

"Usually if you're gonna kidnap someone high profile you know who they are first. Besides there's not a soul in Solitas who doesn't know the Schnees."

"Okay, well, I didn't kidnap you, and also, we're not in Solitas?"

"What?! Where are we then?" Weiss yelled, her pitch rising with shock.

"Patch."

"PATCH?!" Louder this time. Painfully loud. Ruby panicked realizing that Weiss's continued outbursts could wake her parents. She quickly clamped a hand over the heiress' mouth, gesturing for her to be quiet.

"You yell a lot. My parents are gonna wake up if you don't keep it down!"

Weiss's eyes narrowed to slits, but she stopped struggling. She calmed her breathing, slowing it and her heart rate back down to normal. She finally nodded her understanding, causing Ruby to remove her hand.

"There's no way you could have gotten me from Atlas to Vale that quickly, in just a couple hours, while I was sleeping no less. So... you must be telling at least a semblance of the truth."

Ruby nodded eagerly, feeling hopeful that Weiss was starting to believe her. Maybe there was a chance she'd get the girl after all.

"I still don't believe it was some spell though. Magic doesn't exist."

"I didn't think so either, but it brought you here didn't it? Not like there's another way to explain you getting here from Atlas so fast. If you don't believe me you could try it yourself."

"... Why am I indulging this? Fine. Show me how." Weiss crossed her legs underneath her, holding out a hand for the book.

Ruby grabbed it off the floor and opened it to the page she had just been at. She pointed out the phrase Weiss had to utter and sat back on her heels, watching the heiress intently. Weiss took a deep breath before reciting the incantation.

Nothing.

"Well? Exactly the result I was expecting. Magic isn't real."

"I mean... I'm already here. You summoned me from here to... here. So. Uh. Ya know. Here I am."

Ruby smiled awkwardly, gesturing vaguely at herself with her hands. Weiss's cheeks turned a furious red. She glared at Ruby, kicking herself for not realizing something so very obvious.

"Obviously. I wouldn't have made that mistake if SOMEONE hadn't interrupted my sleep. Go to another room or something!"

"Okay okay, geez, just keep your voice down!" Ruby hissed, creeping to the door.

Once she was out of sight, Weiss raised the tome and took a deep breath, pausing momentarily. She had a moment free of that ditzy redhead. She rushed to the window and threw it open.

The air here was warm. And clean. A far cry from Atlas. She could hear waves crashing gently in the distance. She really wasn't anywhere near her home. Honestly though, she could get used to a peaceful, more secluded environment like this. She returned to the room, looking to learn more about her clueless abductor. It was messy and scattered. The furniture was arranged in a stranger manner, though she surmised that was to make room for the spell. There were comic books and figures scattered on shelves and across the desk, and the bed was horribly unmade. Clearly this girl needed some semblance of structure in her life. Though perhaps she could do with a little less herself.

Weiss sighed, returning to the center of the room. She wasn't... ideal necessarily, but maybe a change of pace from the high society she was used to wouldn't be the worst thing. She sat once more, rubbing her temples with one hand as she reached for the tome with the other. She opened her eyes slowly and recited the incantation once more.

To call the girl in front of her excited would have been an understatement. Her eyes were wide and sparkling with joy. The smile she wore was blinding. For a moment Weiss swore she had a rapidly wagging tail. It was so ridiculous. But it was endearing. And a small smile lifted the corners of Weiss's own lips.

"It worked!!"

"Seems that way. You should keep your voice down. Don't want your parents learning you have a girl over. Imagine the scandal." Weiss replied with a wink, using her earlier concerns against her.

"Shut up, I'm excited okay?!"

"Yes yes, soul mates, how exhilarating. I still don't buy it. Even if I accept the spell at face value, which is becoming increasingly difficult to avoid, there's nothing proving that we have any compatibility or that a relationship would have any sort of longevity."

"That's a lot of words to ask for a kiss."

"A what?!"

Ruby shushes her once more glancing at the door.

"I get it by now Weiss. You're the typa girl that needs proof for things right? Well, let's kiss. Just once. If it's good we give this a shot, and if it sucks, you were right and you can yell at me all you want, and we'll get you home first thing in the morning. Unless you think holding hands or something would be good enough."

Ruby wasn't really sure where that came from, but she kinda liked the indignant look on Weiss's face. It was almost endearing seeing someone trying to be so cold and stiff be so utterly flabbergasted. She lurched forward taking the heiress' hands in hers, silently pleading with Weiss to say yes.

"How is that supposed to prove anything?!"

"I dunno, maybe it won't, but you gotta admit you wanna give it a shot."

Ruby gave a knowing grin. After all, she had come around so quickly on the idea of the heiress being her soul mate, she figured Weiss was heading in that direction too, especially given that the indignation was slowly fading from her face. She enjoyed watching the thought process written so clearly on Weiss's face. Her scar really was cute too.

"Maybe... maybe I could humor you, just this once. It's unreasonable in the extreme, but then again so is this whole situation."

Ruby's face was suddenly an inch from hers. This girl was really too excitable. Like a puppy, slobbering all over her owner after a day out.

Weiss reached up placing her right hand on Ruby's shoulder. Her left went higher to cup the younger girls cheek, pulling her in and pressing their lips together at long last.

The kiss was brief and rushed. Neither of them knew what they were doing. It felt awkward, and unpracticed. Weiss's focus was on how eagerly Ruby's lips moved against her own in that mere two seconds of contact. Ruby on the other hand marveled at how pleasantly cool Weiss's were. They pulled apart slowly, eyes meeting one another warily. Weiss was the first to break the silence.

"Well, I suppose one date wouldn't be the worst thing."
