I Never Saw Green

James had seen green all his life.

Seen it in the gardens his mother had spent so much time on.

Seen it in the rippling waves of the lakes his father showed him.

Seen it in the shifting color of his cousin's robes.

But he’d never seen it.

Not until he saw her.

Not until he had stared into those emerald swirling depths.

Not until he saw fire-red hair blow into those forest-green irises.

Not until he had seen rage flash in that gaze, sparkling and raw.

Her eyes were a blend of every gem, every leaf of the forest, every ripple of the tide.

They were all consuming, and he was content to drown in them.

Forever.

When his son was born, it was like finding green all over again.

It was like finding a home, a place of solace that could only be made by a family.

And on that night, when the Dark Lord came, James closed his eyes.

And saw green.

For the first time, and the very last.
