Battements and Beats
Summary
Regulus Black was the top ballet dancer in the academy. The possibility that he could be anything less than perfect was not an idea that had ever been entertained. He had a legacy to protect and his mother made damn sure that he never strayed the way his brother did. His brother, Sirius, never liked ballet. He was too chaotic; uncontrollable for anything meant to convey grace and beauty the way classical ballet was supposed to. No, Sirius decided when he turned sixteen that he would become a hip hop dancer. Of course, their mother didn’t approve. This led to events that catastrophically ruined his life. At fifteen years old Regulus lost his lifeline, his safe space, his brother. Sirius decided that he could not take it anymore and he left. He asked Regulus to leave with him. Begging and pleading for him to understand. As was to be expected of him, Regulus turned away and held in his emotions until he got back to the safety of his room.

When Two Worlds Collide

~~~~~~~
      “And one, and two, and glissade-jeté, jeté, jeté. Good.” Madame McGonagall calls from across the room.
      The class had been going for about an hour when Regulus’ class was interrupted. Everyone looks over to see what happened and low and behold James Potter, the one and only stumbles through the studio door.
      “Mr. Potter? To what do we owe the pleasure?” Madame McGonagall asks disgruntledly.
      “Sorry Madame, I actually needed to speak to you about something.” He huffs out.
      “I’m sure you’ve noticed but I am in the middle of a lesson Mr. Potter. Can’t it wait?”
      James looks around sheepishly before landing on Regulus. His face flushing the crimson color that tends to live on his face when he sees him.
      “I uh- no.” he looks back at his teacher but continues to glance back at Regulus. “It- It’s important. I’m sorry for disrupting.”
      Madame McGonagall looks back at the class and then at the clock above the door. Sighing she dismisses the class for the day.
      Regulus meets James’ eyes with a confused look before leaving the studio.
      A few hours later, Regulus finds himself back in that same studio for his individual studio time. He keeps his headphones in as he walks through the door intending to use them and be quieter for tonight, as he had gotten there later than usual. He pushes the door open and finds an unexpected sight. James Potter was dancing ballet. James, who has never stepped into a ballet class as far as Regulus knows. James, the hip hop star, was dancing a simple classical ballet combination.
      He leans against the frame of the door while he gathers his thoughts about this newfound information. Unfortunately for him, the frame creaks, alerting the man inside the room that he was being watched.
      James Potter, the cocky and undeniably confident idiot, Jumped. Hilariously. He flushed head to toe with embarrassment and a look that could only be described as nervousness fell across his face once he registered that it was Regulus who had interrupted.
      “Reg- uh Regulus” he coughed out, “what- uh what are you doing here?”
      Regulus studied him for a moment, ignoring his slip of the tongue when he used the nickname his estranged brother gave him. For now, he was burning with curiosity about James.
      Realizing he knew hardly anything about the man in front of him, he prudently entered the studio and sauntered over to meet James in the middle of the floor, lowering his pointe shoes onto the Marley beside them. James, still frozen, tracked Regulus’ every movement with his eyes.
      Intrigued by his presence in the studio, Regulus meets James head on. The younger man only came up to about his nose but it still caused James’ breath to hitch.
      “James,” Regulus quietly breaks the silence.
      “yes?” James whispers back. He still seemed nervous.
      “Why are you in the studio? And why are you learning ballet; Mr. Hip Hop star?”
      James, who’s face had finally seemed to return to its natural color, flushed once again.
      “I- uh, well,”
      He takes a step back and rubs his neck while he tries to rack up some kind of excuse. Regulus takes another step forward a little more confidently this time.
      “James, do you want to be a ballerina?” a sly smile makes its way onto his face at the afflicted expression on James’.
      “Please don’t tell.” He breathes out. His hands cover his face and he crosses Regulus to sit against the mirror.
      “Why? What’s wrong with being a ballerina?” Regulus gets a little defensive at the implication.
      “NO! No, that’s not what I meant at all. I just, I know that Sirius would make a big deal over it and I really just want this to be my thing, you know?”
      Understanding suddenly befalls upon Regulus and he joins James on the floor.
      “I can teach you…” He whispers while looking anywhere else but James.
      “Really? You’d do that?” His voice held shock and a hint of hope.
      Regulus looked back at him. Guard up and still studying the man before him. He thought he knew everything about the guy who stole his brother away. He sighed,
      "Turns out perfection is a little flawed.” He thought to himself, and he held out his hand.
      “Come on, let me see what you got.”
