“You have some nerve, coming here.”

“I didn’t have a choice, Darcy.” She clenched her fingers into fists, her nails biting into the soft flesh of her palms, but the slight pain was nothing compared to her heart. “I just need a place to lie low – ”

“You have no right to ask anything of me,” she hissed, jabbing a finger into his chest, but Steve refused to budge, staring down at her with unflinching blue eyes. “You have no right to bring him here!”

“We split the cost, half-half – I have every right,” he said, lips pressed into a tight line. “He’s… he’s all I have left, Darcy.”

“Funny you say that, actually – my dad is all I have left, but that didn’t stop you from nearly killing him!” she near-shouted, and Bucky flinched from where he stood behind Steve.

“Stop shouting,” Steve said lowly.

“Don’t tell me what to do,” she snarled, and just to be contrary she raised her voice. “Why is it that the moment he shows up, you’re willing to drop everything and run to him? How is it that the rest of us just don’t matter to you?”

“I said,” he growled, “stop shouting.”

“Stop shouting? That’s your response, stop shouting?” Darcy scoffed, laughing in a way that made Bucky flinch. “Do you even understand what you’ve done?”

His eyes softened a little at the pain in her voice. “I’m sorry, Darcy.”

“ ‘I’m sorry.’ Seriously? Is that really all you can say?” She snorted, shaking her head. She jabbed her finger into his chest again, hissing, “Because of you, Rhodey may never walk again. Because of you, Pepper’s been running herself ragged, trying to keep Congress and SHIELD off your asses by claiming responsibility for every building, every bridge, every goddamn city you destroy in this godforsaken war you’ve dragged us all into. And this is how you repay her?” At that, Steve swallowed, a flicker of shame passing through his eyes as she plowed onwards.

“Because of you, my dad is lying in a hospital bed, in a coma he might never wake up from,” she said hoarsely, swallowing her tears, “and you have the fucking audacity to stand here in front of me with the man that killed my grandparents, bring him to our house, and ask for my help, with nothing more than, ‘I’m sorry?’ ”

“I’m sorry, Darcy,” Steve said again, this time with more remorse, but she knew he didn’t mean it. How could he? “But he’s my friend.”

“So was Rhodey. So was Pepper. So was my dad,” She laughed bitterly, shaking her head. “So was I.”

She spun on her heel, stalking over to where her bag laid on the dining room table, and pulled her keys from the front pocket, roughly finding the shiny brass one she’d picked out with him not even a month ago. Yanking it off the keychain, she threw it at him, watching all her happiness and hopes from the month prior disappear the moment he caught the key.

“Do what you want, Steve,” she said roughly, and when Steve opened his hand his gaze snapped up to meet hers, eyes wide. “But I want nothing to do with it.”

He looked at her, as if suddenly realizing what was happening, and stepped forward, reaching towards her. “Darcy – ”

“There are a lot of things I can forgive. But this?” She shook her head, shoving her keys back into her bag and hiking it over her shoulder. “What you’re doing, what you’ve done? I can’t forgive you, Steve. I won’t.

And she strode right past him, not looking at either him nor Bucky as she marched down the entry hall, pulled the front door open, and walked out.
