Dust Devil

He sees the dust devils from several miles off, venting heat from the desert’s hot engine into a cloudless blue sky. They remind him of a kid he met once who called the devils willy-willies and said that clockwise whirlwinds were good spirits and anticlockwise bad, or was it the other way around?
By the time he zones back in they’re just about on top of him, and he guns the motor too late; cos there’s sand in his eyes and grit in his mouth and the sting of a slap on his cheek, and something whispers harshly in his ear go back.
