Chapter 10

“I’ll get a ride back to the apartment.” Tricia waves off the concern in Little Tony’s eyes, and the suspicion in Uncle Donnie’s. “I just…I need to talk to Nicky. You know, before dealing with anything else.”

Little Tony nods, his look telling her that he doesn’t believe her reasoning any more than Uncle Donnie does. “Sure, sis. See you back at the apartment. Seems I’ll be stuck in Manhattan for the seeable future, huh?”

“Yeah.” Tricia waits until the car is out of sight before turning to go back into the police station. She watches from the doors as different people in different uniforms run about their daily business. It takes everything in her to force her feet to move her across the room until she’s standing right beside a Detective Danny Reagan’s desk. “I’m not a snitch.” Her voice catches and he looks up appearing to be surprised.

“What do you mean?” Detective Reagan leans away from the computer screen so that all of his focus is on Tricia.

Her hands twitch and she consciously stills them by her side before taking a deep breath. “My brother didn’t kill Diamond Sparkles or whatever her name is.” Tricia waves a hand to the side, as if saying ‘who cares about a name’ before settling it down beside her. Detective Reagan doesn’t look impressed and Tricia leans forward to put her hand on the desk. “The thing, though…” Here she glances around the room before looking back at Nicky’s uncle. “Look back at the evidence. There’s someone else’s DNA on her. He always was sloppy.”

“He?” Reagan asks, and Tricia jerks back to take in a breath. In her mind she’s not seeing the people running around her but a set a of dark eyes with the feeling of a weight being pressed down on her.

She shakes her head to throw out the memories. “Yeah. This isn’t his first time. Look in your files. He doesn’t kill all the time, but he does leave a mark.”

“Here you go…Oh.” Detective Baez interrupts with a cup of coffee and Tricia stands up straight with a smile. If anyone had bothered to look, there would have been suspicious reddening as if the woman had been trying to hold back tears.

“Good luck, Detectives.” Tricia pushes back the pain and memories to place her shark smile firmly into place. “If you need me? I have a date with a beautiful woman I need to apologize to.”
