Chapter 1
“Up already?” Veronica grumbles, “I thought we agreed you wouldn’t leave the bed until at least 6AM.”
“I have a mission,” Acxa says getting up to walk towards the wardrobe, Veronica pulls the blankets tighter around herself.
“One that requires you to be up at…” Veronica squints at the alarm clock, “4:53 in the morning?”
“One that requires me to go pick up your brother while Keith finishes setting up the arrangements to meet with rebel forces,” Axca says, Veronica groans.
“Please tell me you’re not going to my house.”
“He’s meeting me at the hangar, they won’t even have to know that it’s me,” Acxa says.
Veronica hums in recognition, “It doesn’t matter if they know it's you, I just don’t want you to get stuck in an awkward conversation by yourself.”
“I didn’t think the dinner was that awkward,” Acxa says, removing her sleep shirt and slipping on the undershirt for her suit. Veronica grimaces and Acxa has become familiar enough with her expressions to notice. “I mean, I know they don’t like me, but they didn’t say anything unkind,” she amends.
“It’s not that they don’t like you–” Veronica tries to tell her.
“It is my Galra lineage making them uncomfortable, I know.”
Veronica sighs, “I don’t think that’s it, but whatever it is they’ll get over it. My family will learn to love you just like I have.”
“Despite my being ‘oblivious to social cues’?” Acxa asks, Veronica snickers.
“Hey, I like that about you. Your bluntness is one of your best qualities. I’d take your straightforwardness over my mother’s passive aggression any day.”
“Passive aggression?” Acxa asks.
“It’s all in the tone,” Veronica tells her, “That’s what made dinner so awkward.”
Acxa goes to pack her bag, dawning her armor and brushing out her hair. “Being at your home reminded me of something,” she says.
“Of what?” Veronica asks, already half asleep again and her voice muffled from her pillow.
“In one of the first interactions I had with you, you spoke about having ‘childhood pets’,” she says.
“Ya?”
“Do you miss having an animal companion?”
“I dunno, we’re kind of busy so it might be difficult to take care of.”
“Keith seems to take care of Kosmo just fine,” Acxa mentions.
“Are you asking if I want to get a pet?” Veronica asks, turning a bit in bed to look at her.
Acxa walks over to the side of the bed and looks down at her, “Ronnie, I want to have a cat with you,” she proclaims. Veronica blinks at her a few times before becoming teary eyed.
“I will,” she sobs. Acxa leans down to kiss her girlfriend’s forehead.
“Good. Now get back to sleep, I’ll see you when I return from my mission a quintant from now.”
“Give me a proper kiss if you’ll be gone all day,” Veronica protests, pulling Acxa back down with a hand on the back of her neck.
Acxa kisses her squarely, then gently tucks her hair behind her ear and situates the covers up to her chin the way Veronica likes them. Her lover smiles up at her fondly and Acxa turns to go. “Be safe,” Veronica tells her.
“I will,” Acxa promises, and she walks out the sliding door.
