Someday When I Stop Loving You

“No Steve please!” [Y/N] begged as she took hold of his arm with tears in her [e/c] eyes, “You don’t have to do this.”
He stopped walking as he reached the doorway and her hold on him slackened, thinking she had finally gotten through to him. Blue eyes closed with a pained expression and she knew there was a battle raging inside of him. Instinctively her grip tightened once more and she silently prayed to a God he got her to believe in that he wouldn’t leave.
“It’s the only way you’ll be safe [Y/N].” Steve said for the hundredth time.
“I’m safe with you!” She exclaimed as she was pulled along when he began walking again.
He easily pulled free of her hold and turned to face her. Those blue eyes she loved so much were misty as his gaze burned into her and she could practically see their memories playing like a movie in their depths.

“Watch out!”
By the time she had acknowledged the voice shouting it was too late and she was on the ground with a German Shepard laying on top of her. [E/C] eyes stared in confusion at the happy looking dog and in response earned an onslaught of licks from her furry assailant. As she laid there on the gravel path laughing and attempting to escape the pup he was pulled off of her.
“I’m sorry miss!”
[Y/N] returned to a standing position and looked at the tall flustered man with the most beautiful blue eyes she had ever seen. Beside him the dog looked back and forth between them as if expecting a reward.
“He’s a very beautiful dog.” She remarked as though she hadn’t just been knocked to the ground by the animal and reached over to pet the expectant canine.
“He belongs to my friend.” The blonde man explained and sighed, “I promised to take care of him while my friend is away on business and he’s stronger than he looks. Again I’m so sorry.”
“There’s no need to apologize.” [Y/N] laughed, returning her attention to the handsome man.
“At least let me buy you lunch as an apology.”
“Alright, that seems fair.” She said and held out her hand, “I’m [Y/N].”
“I’m Steve.” Steve said, taking the offered hand and giving it a shake, “And this is Zeus.”
“It’s very nice to meet you Zeus.” [Y/N] laughed, petting the dog once again before they began to walk.
*
“Careful Mr. Rogers,” [Y/N] laughed when she walked up to the table Steve and his friends were sitting at,” someone might think you’re stalking me.”
“So is this the lovely lady Zeus jumped on?” Tony Stark asked, eyeing the [h/c] haired woman with an approving gaze.
“It must be.” A red haired woman snickered, “It’s not every day Steve turns that shade of pink.”
“I didn’t know you worked here.” Steve finally said before his friends had a chance to say anything else.
“Well here and the bookshop on North Jefferson.” She said with a shrug, “Gotta pay for school somehow.”
“Beauty and brains.” Tony Stark commented with a nod then looked over at Steve with a smirk, “Go for it Cap.”
“Tony!” Steve exclaimed, his face increasing to a light red.
“Stark is right Steve,” The red head female chimed in with a smirk of her own.
“Thanks Nat.” The blonde man grumbled.
“Uh….” [Y/N] choked, her own face turning red, “What can I get you all to drink?”
She took their orders then hurried away to the kitchen, when she returned there was anticipation in the atmosphere around the table.
“Hey [Y/N]?” Steve said as she placed his coke down, “Would you like to go to dinner sometime?”
“I-….” Her [e/c] eyes scanned the other two occupants of the table and embarrassment quickly settled over her, “Yes.”
*
“I like the name Ruth.” Steve said as they laid in bed one Saturday morning, his hands were behind his head and his attention was directed to the ceiling but she knew he was talking to her.
“What are you talking about?” She laughed, rolling over so that she could look at him.
“For our daughter, I like the name Ruth.” He explained then turned over so that their eyes met, “It was my grandmother’s name.”
It didn’t strike her as at all weird that they were naming children they hadn’t even thought of having. It just felt natural to her, to talk about their future together.
“It’s cute.” [Y/N] said with a nod, “I also like [grandmother’s name], that was my grandma’s name.”
“We can always draw straws when it comes time.” He suggested with a grin.
“Deal.” [Y/N] giggled, leaning over to seal it with a kiss.

“Please.” [Y/N] pleaded, reaching up and placing her hand to his cheek as a tear slipped down her cheek.
“I’m sorry.” Steve whispered, leaning down to kiss away the rogue tear from her cheek before turning away from her.
She watched as he climbed onto his motorcycle and started the engine. She stood frozen where he left her, forced to watch as the motorcycle drove off and disappeared somewhere along the horizon. Tears fell to the dirt path like raindrops. [Y/N] felt her heart shatter and would have given anything to make the pain go away but that would have meant forgetting him and nothing was worth that.
One day she would find the strength to move on, someday when she stopped loving him.
