When I Need You The Most
“I’m sorry.”
The building was crumbling with her in the basement holding the briefcase they came looking for and there was no means of escape. Death was inevitable but it didn’t bother her as much as it should have.
“Don’t you dare give up [Y/N]!” Tony shouted into her earpiece.
But she had given up. Instead of running around, hopelessly searching for a way out of the labyrinth she stood at a fork in the path. It seemed fitting.
Fires blazed around her causing it to feel like an oven while the smoke began to thicken making it all but impossible to breathe. She dropped to the floor, closing her [e/c] eyes as the smoke began to burn them, and waited for death to take her. She never imagined she’d just give up or her ending to be so willing but at least the chemical would die with her. The feeling of lightheadedness washed over her as her lungs struggled to find oxygen and she knew it was only a matter of time.
Suddenly there were arms lifting her, holding her close to a firm body as cool breath brushed against her face and the scent of spices mixed with something that made her think of a library over powered the smoke surrounding them.
“I thought I told you not to do anything stupid mortal?”
[Y/N] forced her eyes opened and found bright emerald eyes staring down at her. She was sure she was dead, though whether she was in heaven or hell was still to be determined. Involuntarily she shifted close to him, breathing in his scent and feeling her body relax. At least she was able to be with him in death.
Her lungs felt as if they were on fire and when she opened her eyes she immediately closed them. Hesitantly she opened her eyes and glared at the florescent light above her. It was obvious that she wasn’t dead and she wasn’t sure how she felt about that.
“Finally awake I see.”
She turned her head to see Clint walk into the room with a cup of coffee.
“What happened?” [Y/N] asked, her voice scratchy and painful.
“Well for starters we were pretty sure you were dead but then-“
“Loki.”
“Yeah.” Clint said, a frown pulling at his lips, “He showed up with you in his arms, nearly ripped Tony’s head off when he took you from him and got tore into by Thor for using his magick too.”
“Where is he?” The more she spoke the easier it became to speak but it still didn’t sound too easy on the ears.
Clint gestured to the corner of the hospital room where Loki sat watching them, emerald eyes shining.
“He never leaves.” Clint half complained.
“How long have I been out?”
“A-“
“Nine days.” Loki answered.
“What he said.” Clint huffed, “I guess I should let everyone else know you’re back with us.”
Without another word Clint left the pair in the room and the moment the door was shut Loki was beside her, cradling her face in his surprisingly gentle hands. There was something in his gaze that had never been there before, relief maybe?
“Perhaps had I told you sooner you would not have stopped fighting.” Loki said softly, his thumb stroking her face, “Possibly then you would have seen that you had someone to fight for.”
“Wh-“
“I told you not to do anything stupid.” He continued, his grip on her tightening slightly, “Then Stark said you were trapped. Never have I felt fear as intense as when I thought I was going to lose you.”
“I-“
“When I found you, you had already collapsed and had I not known there was a chance to rescue you, I would happily have perished in that fire beside you.” Loki confessed.
“Loki-“
“Never make me feel like that again [Y/N].” Loki begged, bowing his head to rest it upon her shoulder.
“You were there when I needed you the most and for that Loki I thank you.” [Y/N] said with a small smile, knowing now that she was glad to be alive still and able to be with those she cared about, “You are both my heaven and my hell.”
“I did not reach you fast enough.” He said quietly as he raised his head, his fingers gliding gently over a wound on her upper left arm.
“Battle wounds are a part of the job.” She remarked with a shrug, “I’m still alive aren’t I? I have you to thank for that.”
“I cannot lose you.” Loki said firmly, leaning down and pressing his lips ever so softly into hers.
They both seemed to soak in this long awaited moment but as her lungs protested to the further obstruction to air she was forced to break away. He smiled down at her, running his fingers soothingly along the side of her face until she began to doze off once more.
“Mind if we join you?” Tony asked as he and the others walked into the hospital room, earning a glare from Loki.
“Not at all.” [Y/N] said with a soft laugh as she watched her friends crowd around her.
