To The Burial

“What the hell do you think you’re doing [Y/N]?” Tony shouted in her earpiece.
“There’s still someone in here!” She yelled back, running past the bodies of those they weren’t able to save and continued to follow the cries.
“The place is gonna blow!” Natasha snapped, “You can’t save everyone!”
“I can try.” [Y/N] retorted and turned her earpiece off.
She ran, smoke clogging her lungs and making her eyes water but she had finally tracked down the room the cries were coming from. She kicked open the door and ran in, there was little time left and if she didn’t hurry they would both die.
“Hello?” [Y/N] called out, scanning the room through the thick smoke but spotting no one.
She followed, as she had been doing for the past seven minutes, the cries but as she reached the spot the sounds were coming from she found no one. There was a recorder emanating the sounds, she picked up the device and swore under her breath. It was a trap and she hand fallen for it.
“Having fun?”
[Y/N] turned around to see Iron Man walking towards her, the metal face plate up to reveal Tony’s more than furious expression.
“It was a trap.” She said dejectedly and held the recorder up as evidence.
“Wonderful.” Tony said without a care, grabbing her arm in a painful hold and yanking her towards the wall, “Now we’re getting out of here before you can run off and try to play hero some more.”
“Tony-“
He blasted the wall away and he pulled her closer before jumping out the hole. The building exploded the moment they were in the air. Concrete and metal rained down upon them and before Tony had the chance to avoid a particularly large chunk of concrete in flew into the back of Tony’s neck and they were falling.

She sat up with a piercing scream, tears rapidly fell from her [e/c] eyes once she assured herself that it had just been a dream.
But it wasn’t a dream at all.
“Anthony.” [Y/N] sobbed, covering her face with her hands and shaking as her own misery consumed her.
It had been her fault, no one would say it of course but it was the truth. Anthony was dead because of her.
There came a knock on her door and she froze, she hated when the others came to check on her because their sympathy only made everything feel worse. By remaining silent she hoped that whoever it was would just assume she was asleep and go away.
“I know you are awake.”
[E/C] eyes widened in surprise. Never before had it been Loki at her door. The door slowly opened and Loki walked in, quietly shutting the door behind him and walking over to where she sat on the bed. Neither of them said anything as he took a seat, she only vigorously wiped away tears that continued to fall.
“I can hear you crying through the walls.” He said as way of explaining his appearance in her room.
“I’m sorry.” She said in what she hoped was a stable voice.
“He was important to you, Stark.” Loki said, his attention directed to the closet across the room.
“He was.” [Y/N] confirmed and her voice cracked, causing Loki to look over at her and watch as she once again buried her face in his hands, “And it’s all my fault he’s gone!”
He watched her cry, gasping for breath between sobs and shoulders shaking as uncontrollable wails filled the room, before grabbing ahold of her and pulling her into his arms. Without hesitation she wrapped her arms around him and concealed her face in his chest. They sat in silence, Loki rubbing circles in her back as every few minutes the remnants of a sob would cause her to tremble.
“He’s gone and he’s never coming back.” [Y/N] whispered once she had gained enough strength to speak.
“That is true.” Loki said but continued as he felt her tense, “But no one blames you and you should not blame yourself.”
“Why did you come here Loki?”
“Because I care for you more than I care to admit.” Loki answered as his hold on her tightened, “And I will not sit by and watch as you torture yourself over what happened two weeks ago for it was not your fault. HYDRA was to blame and it is HYDRA we shall destroy.”
“Thank you Loki.” [Y/N] whispered, her body relaxing as she rested her head on his chest.
He held her, continuing to rub patterns into her back, even as she fell into the first peaceful sleep she had had since that day. He vowed to himself that he would not let her feel such pain ever again.
