Chapter 11

A few hours later when Bernie was awake and more calm she was wheeled down for a head scan just to make sure she hadn’t done any damage. Serena waited on AAU for Bernie to get back.

“Someone from the psychiatric team will be down soon to assess Bernie properly she needs more than just a few sessions with the councillor” Fletch Explained to Serena

“I know it’s just hard watching her like this” Serena sighed

“It’s hard watching someone you love losing their mind, but she will get through this she’s tough” said Fletch

“God does everyone know about that?” Serena asked

“Love is a funny thing you can’t hide it for long, not from the person you love, people around you and certainly not from yourself” said Fletch with a small smile

Serena through for a moment he was right in everything he said and it was about time she stopped hiding it.

“I’m going to take good care of her from now on, show her how much she means to me” Serena said

“That’s the spirit” Fletch piped up

At that moment Bernie was wheeled back into the side room, Serena followed her in. She gave Bernie a small smile and sat next to her holding her hand. Bernie was still a bit
spaced out just lying there. A little while later another Dr came in to talk to Bernie.

“It would be helpful if I could talk to Bernie alone” the Dr suggested

“Don’t leave me” Bernie Whispered to Serena with Fear in her eyes

“Don’t worry I‘m not going far I will be right outside” Serena replied

Bernie looked up at her she looked so small and helpless lying there Serena couldn’t bare to leave her like this but knew it was for the best.

The counselor came into have a chat to Bernie and see how best to proceed. She sat by Bernie’s bedside with her pen and clipboard writing down all manner of things as they went along. The counselor started to ask Bernie question’s, in reality Bernie didn’t want to answer them she just wanted to block everything out not talk about it ever again, but really
how was that going to help. She thought for a moment it’s better out than in.

“So how long have you been feeling like this?” the counselor asked “since the accident or before?”

Bernie laid there for a moment before answering

“I was always glad that I never got this before for the accident, I’ve seen people young men boys even struck down at with shock at the mere sight of war. I was always so strong”
said Bernie with a hoarse voice which hurt a bit from all that crying and she was getting a small headache she tried to focus.

“What changed?” the counselor asked

“I was scared of dying alone, all I can see is me alone in that field unable to get up and no one coming to help I thought that was it, in a way I wish It had been” she cried

The counselor wrote down a few things asked a few more questions and left the room to chat with Fletch and Serena.

“She needs to spend a few weeks on the psychiatric ward just to sort things out and get her the right medication.” The counselor explained

Serena signed some papers on Bernie’s behalf and went back into see her

“Bernie you look terrible” Serena commented

Bernie looked quite pale laying there it took all her energy to say anything.

“I I’ve a slight headache” she whispered

Raf came in with Bernie’s test results

“You’ll be glad to know it’s just mild concussion we need to monitor you for a few hours then that’s it” Raf explained

“Thank god for that” sighed Serena “any chance she can have some pain relief, she says she’s got a slight headache”

“Sure I will send Fletch in with something” said Raf as he left the room

Serena helped Bernie sit up and sat on the bed next to her with her arm around Bernie, Bernie felt a bit more relaxed with Serena holding her

“It will be alright in the end you know it’s just going to take time” said Serena in a low voice.

They had been sat on the bed for about an hour Bernie was still staring into space.

“Bernie can you move a bit my arms going numb” said Serena as she pulled it out Bernie didn’t move once or even seem to notice she was there. A nurse came down to take her to another ward to be cared for without Serena watching over her.

“It’s best if you leave her for 24hrs while we get her settled then you can come back and see her” said the Dr, Bernie didn’t even seem to realise that Serena had left.

Serena went back down to AAU to collect some things from her locker before heading home she needed food and sleep while she didn’t have Bernie to watch over. Not that it made her feel any better, she hated leaving Bernie not when they had only just found each other.

“So what you doing now?” asked Fletch

“Going home for food and bed” Serena answered

“Fancy a drink I’m meeting Raf and Morven at Albies” said Fletch

Serena thought for a moment maybe a drink was what she needed after the few days she had, had.

“So what’s happening with Bernie” Raf asked when Serena and Fletch got to Albies

“She’s staying in for a few weeks and I’m going to see her tomorrow bring her a few things” Serena explained

“Send her our love won’t you” said Morven

“I will do I’m just scared what I might find when I go back tomorrow seems like I’m losing the Bernie I know and love” said Serena looking worried.
